00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 Welcome to Where Science Meets Self-Care with
00:00:03 --> 00:00:06 Ida Fanelli. With over 30 years in beauty and
00:00:06 --> 00:00:09 wellness and a background in medical science,
00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 Ida blends clinical knowledge with holistic care.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:16 Each week, she and her guests share insights
00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 to help you achieve healthier skin, balanced
00:00:19 --> 00:00:23 energy, and empowered self -care. Now, here's
00:00:23 --> 00:00:33 your host, Ida Finelli. My next guest is inspiring.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 She's retraining into a new field when others
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 would just be accepting the standard quo. Metabolism
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 Reset After 50. Today I'm joined by Karen Miller,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 a women's health coach who's passionate about
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 helping women over 50 reset their metabolism,
00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 break free from diet, culture, and age with energy,
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 confidence, and strength. Karen's journey into
00:00:58 --> 00:01:02 health coaching is deeply personal. After losing
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 her father to cancer and facing her own health
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 struggles, including insulin resistance and fatty
00:01:09 --> 00:01:12 liver disease, she turned to food and lifestyle
00:01:12 --> 00:01:16 changes as powerful tools for healing. What she
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 discovered not only transformed her own health
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 but also became the foundation of her mission
00:01:22 --> 00:01:27 to help other women thrive. Through her training
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 with Precision Nutrition the world's largest
00:01:30 --> 00:01:33 online nutrition and healthy lifestyle coaching
00:01:33 --> 00:01:38 company KRM News is a proven evidence -based
00:01:38 --> 00:01:41 system that focuses on small, sustainable habit
00:01:41 --> 00:01:46 changes rather than quick fixes. Precision Nutrition
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 is known for blending cutting -edge science with
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 real -world coaching, helping people make lasting
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 improvements to their health, fitness, and performance.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 Karen also incorporates the latest research in
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 nutrigenomics, the study of how food interacts
00:02:03 --> 00:02:07 with our genes to help her clients personalize
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 their nutrition for better metabolic health.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 Her approach goes beyond food, addressing the
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 whole picture, sleep, movement, stress recovery,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 and building confidence from the inside out.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 We're going to dive into her personal journey,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 the science behind metabolism and aging, and
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 some simple but powerful changes that can make
00:02:29 --> 00:02:33 a huge difference in a woman's health after 50.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:37 Karen, welcome to the show. Thank you, Ana, for
00:02:37 --> 00:02:42 inviting me. I am really happy to be here. Okay,
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 great. Karen, let's start at the beginning. What
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 first sparked your passion for women's health?
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 And how did losing your dad and facing your own
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 health challenges shape the path you're on today?
00:02:56 --> 00:03:00 Well, I was a single mom at the time, raising
00:03:00 --> 00:03:05 two teenage children, working retail on social
00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 assistance, so trying to make ends meet and that.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:14 And I was married for over 20 -some years. My
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 ex really didn't like my family and that. So
00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 I tried to build a relationship back with my
00:03:19 --> 00:03:23 father. And then as time went on, he always had
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 back issues. So they put him in the hospital
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 for some back, back, so touching his back. I
00:03:28 --> 00:03:33 found out he had melanoma, skin cancer. So my
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 parents were married for over 50 years and it
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 kind of shocked them. It rocked their boat. I
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 had two sisters and a brother. They're all younger
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 than me. And I remember seeing, like I used to
00:03:45 --> 00:03:49 joke with my parents that they always love to
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 go to Timmy's, right, for coffee. And I thought,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 oh, do you have a membership there? Back then,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 we didn't have a points card in that. So it was
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 kind of a joke. So then he got put in the hospital.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 The next day, found out he had melanoma on skin
00:04:02 --> 00:04:07 cancer. So it really, really shook my mom. I
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 tried to be there, very supportive of her and
00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 going. I left my kids. They were old enough to
00:04:13 --> 00:04:15 stay by themselves, went to the hospital, back
00:04:15 --> 00:04:19 and forth and that. And then they wanted to put
00:04:19 --> 00:04:23 him on cancer treatment, radiation and chemotherapy.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 Well, my mom said, no chemo, chemo, no, no, no
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 way. So he just did the radiation. The next day
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 I went in, he was like a zombie. It kind of shocked
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 me to the core. It was really hard. And she put
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 her head on his shoulder and they were both crying
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 back and forth to different hospitals and things
00:04:40 --> 00:04:44 like that. And then within a month, he was gone.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:48 So that's like cancer. Like there's so much.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 If you listen to people. It was too late, obviously.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 They didn't know it was there is what you're
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 saying. Yeah. Yeah. Like he had prostate cancer
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 before and things got better here. And yes, it
00:04:59 --> 00:05:04 just spread right through his body. And really,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 really fast. So, I mean, yeah, I was in shock.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 My mom was in shock. Either for her, as I was
00:05:10 --> 00:05:14 the oldest child, like my two sisters and my
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 brother. I mean, we were all trying to support
00:05:16 --> 00:05:19 her. And she was raising my sister's kids because
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 my sister wasn't capable of raising them herself.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:28 So, I guess they're my steps. step sister brother
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 type of thing so it was hard it was really emotionally
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 hard and was that the moment when you realized
00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 food and lifestyle changes could be as powerful
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 or maybe more powerful than medication for certain
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 health issues yeah because I see them with so
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 much medication and drugs going into them and
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 I go there's got to be a different way there's
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 got to be something I mean, there is a time and
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 place for medication. I'm not totally against
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 medication. I mean, yeah, we're going to need
00:05:56 --> 00:06:00 that. And yeah, but just to push the medication,
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 to put a band -aid effect over it, it's not the
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 solution. We know they're playing around with
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 our foods today and farming techniques and all
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 kinds of crazy stuff. And we have to learn to
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 read labels and things like that. So we know
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 what to nourish our bodies with. Yeah, that's
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 very, very important. That's kind of where I
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 am. It kind of put the light bulb on me because
00:06:24 --> 00:06:27 I gained a lot of weight. I gained like, what
00:06:27 --> 00:06:32 was it? I was 239 pounds. I started to have aches
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 in my body, sore knees. I was unhappy. I was
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 depressed. It just kind of turned the light bulb.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:45 Right now, you focus on helping women over 50
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 reset their metabolism. Why is this stage of
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 life such a critical turning point, and why do
00:06:51 --> 00:06:54 so many women feel stuck in the diet culture
00:06:54 --> 00:06:59 loop at this age? Well, I've seen so much. I'm
00:06:59 --> 00:07:02 on Instagram quite a bit, and there's so much,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:06 even LinkedIn and Facebook. There's so many.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 diet things out there take a patch take take
00:07:10 --> 00:07:14 these drops take try this um weight loss program
00:07:14 --> 00:07:18 I've been there like I tried keto didn't work
00:07:18 --> 00:07:22 with me I had no energy I tried it was another
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 one I can't remember or something like that I
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 tried a bunch of different ones okay the problem
00:07:27 --> 00:07:31 is that you yes you can lose the weight yeah
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 that's great I mean but does it teach you anything
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 the problem is Within a year or two years, they
00:07:37 --> 00:07:41 gain that back and maybe more. So that's what
00:07:41 --> 00:07:46 I see. And, you know, it's like it's not teaching
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 you anything, how to eat, how to like lifestyle
00:07:49 --> 00:07:52 change, I would say. Yeah, like the fad diets.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:58 They don't work. Yeah. One thing you talk about
00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 is breaking free from a restrictive diet culture
00:08:01 --> 00:08:05 and focusing on. small, sustainable habits. What
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 does that look like in real life for your clients?
00:08:09 --> 00:08:14 Well, I'm not a full coach yet. I'm three quarters
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 done, so I've got five more chapters to do. But
00:08:16 --> 00:08:20 we have an amazing group where coaches is. We
00:08:20 --> 00:08:23 have another group where our lessons are. So
00:08:23 --> 00:08:26 I listen to some of these coaches, what they're
00:08:26 --> 00:08:30 doing, and I learn off of them how they're implementing.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 Like, I guess it's like personal strategies for
00:08:34 --> 00:08:38 them. So, you know, it's just like, okay, I'm
00:08:38 --> 00:08:41 not going to give you a meal plan. That's out
00:08:41 --> 00:08:44 of our school of practice anyhow. It's up to
00:08:44 --> 00:08:47 a dietician. We can give you mindful eating.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 You can take a deep, put your fork down, you
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 know, take a breathe. What's it taste like? How's
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 it feel? Things like that, right? So that's one
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 of the things that we can count on. And, like,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:06 there's different other things. Maybe 10 minutes
00:09:06 --> 00:09:10 after you eat, take a 10 -minute walk. It helps
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 with sugar if people have blood sugar. Everybody
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 has blood sugar, because your blood sugar is
00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 going to go up and down all day long. But you
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 don't want it to spike up. You want it to just
00:09:20 --> 00:09:25 go. Learning the right foods to eat. So, yeah.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 Because we've got a table, it's about, let's
00:09:28 --> 00:09:32 say, take protein for example. Okay, here's your
00:09:32 --> 00:09:36 protein. It would say, eat more, eat some, and
00:09:36 --> 00:09:41 then eat less. So that's what kind of what we
00:09:41 --> 00:09:44 show to our clients. I've worked with clients
00:09:44 --> 00:09:47 that informed me that they couldn't process certain
00:09:47 --> 00:09:52 vitamins. Type of DNA test where they can identify
00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 whether our genes are processing foods and nutrients
00:09:55 --> 00:09:59 properly. It's called nutrigenomics. How can
00:09:59 --> 00:10:04 you help people with these kinds of issues? Well,
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 I know my sister, she was talking to me almost
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 the other day. She's got thyroid issues, right?
00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 So it's magnesium she can't take. So I was asking,
00:10:13 --> 00:10:16 she said it counteracts gene, you know, testing
00:10:16 --> 00:10:20 for your gene therapy. That would be probably
00:10:20 --> 00:10:25 a nutritionist and a specialist. We get the report
00:10:25 --> 00:10:28 back and we go over it and, okay, you can't take
00:10:28 --> 00:10:31 this vitamin. All right, we understand. So that's
00:10:31 --> 00:10:34 where that comes in. We don't do the gene testing
00:10:34 --> 00:10:38 ourselves. So it would be probably somebody like
00:10:38 --> 00:10:41 a nutritionist or somebody in that. There's a
00:10:41 --> 00:10:44 place in London that does gene testing actually
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 in the hospitals. Oh, really? That did that.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:51 Oh, that's interesting. I'm always looking. You
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 can look it up on the computer and just look
00:10:53 --> 00:10:56 up gene testing. There's a place in our city
00:10:56 --> 00:10:59 that has it. Oh, that's good to know. Thanks.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 I've been trying to get the word out for it.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 Yeah. Yeah. Okay. All right. I thought I'd clear
00:11:04 --> 00:11:10 that up for you. Could you give us a practical
00:11:10 --> 00:11:13 example like how? Knowing a certain gene might
00:11:13 --> 00:11:16 influence some food choices, energy, or even
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 how their body responds to exercise. I think
00:11:18 --> 00:11:21 listeners would love to see how this plays out
00:11:21 --> 00:11:25 in everyday life. Probably, like if they take
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 the wrong thing, they're probably not going to
00:11:27 --> 00:11:30 have the energy or the strength or something
00:11:30 --> 00:11:34 like that. It's just not. it's probably just
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 not going to adapt with their body. So let's
00:11:37 --> 00:11:40 say vitamin B, let's say if they can't take that,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:43 vitamin B is for energy and that. So they're
00:11:43 --> 00:11:46 probably not going to get the energy that the
00:11:46 --> 00:11:49 vitamin B is going to give them. So if their
00:11:49 --> 00:11:53 genes won't adapt to that, that's usually what's
00:11:53 --> 00:11:57 going to happen. That will give you some idea
00:11:57 --> 00:12:03 about that. It's not just about what's on your
00:12:03 --> 00:12:06 plate. You also emphasize sleep, movement, and
00:12:06 --> 00:12:09 stress recovery. How do these pieces fit into
00:12:09 --> 00:12:13 the bigger metabolic health picture? Well, if
00:12:13 --> 00:12:16 you're not sleeping is like seconds of breathing.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:20 So if you're not sleeping properly, you're going
00:12:20 --> 00:12:24 to gain more belly fat, especially menopause,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:28 right? Menopause can affect all kinds of things,
00:12:28 --> 00:12:33 headaches. inflammation, things like that. So
00:12:33 --> 00:12:38 that can trigger that if you're not having enough
00:12:38 --> 00:12:42 sleep. Other things would be, let's say, the
00:12:42 --> 00:12:47 metabolic system. Can you repeat the question
00:12:47 --> 00:12:53 again? You want to hear it again? Yeah. Okay.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:57 My mind got a track. Okay. Beyond food, it's
00:12:57 --> 00:13:00 not just what's on. um the plate you also emphasize
00:13:00 --> 00:13:04 sleep movement and stress recovery yes so you
00:13:04 --> 00:13:10 like we have a a chart that we do when the client
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 first comes in it will say like how much they
00:13:13 --> 00:13:17 weigh like it's called your macros would your
00:13:17 --> 00:13:22 um audience know what macros are what is it macros
00:13:22 --> 00:13:29 what is it yeah your fat your protein your fiber
00:13:29 --> 00:13:33 things like that so it would it was okay on how
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 much you weigh and let's say somebody wants to
00:13:35 --> 00:13:38 lose weight it would show you all that so it
00:13:38 --> 00:13:41 shows you then we give you a chart a whole whole
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 printout thing how to incorporate that and then
00:13:44 --> 00:13:47 the client usually checks in once a week because
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 they need support you know you're not going to
00:13:49 --> 00:13:53 do it alone and so it's usually people will fail
00:13:53 --> 00:13:57 so that's why we like to support them and things
00:13:57 --> 00:14:01 like that and then like your energy so you know
00:14:01 --> 00:14:04 calories are your energy carbs carbs are not
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 the bad thing these simple carbs yeah like your
00:14:06 --> 00:14:09 white shot flowers and sugars and things like
00:14:09 --> 00:14:13 that and pastries but your complex carbs like
00:14:13 --> 00:14:19 your um quinoa your lentils um chicken things
00:14:19 --> 00:14:23 like that whole grains Those are the ones. We
00:14:23 --> 00:14:26 need that to burn energy. So everything's in
00:14:26 --> 00:14:30 moderation. Everything's balanced. And then I
00:14:30 --> 00:14:33 was finding out about both facts. That's really
00:14:33 --> 00:14:38 how the metabolic system. So, yeah. So those
00:14:38 --> 00:14:41 are the kind of things that we focus on. I hope
00:14:41 --> 00:14:46 that helps you. Okay. What are some of the biggest
00:14:46 --> 00:14:49 challenges women face? when they're trying to
00:14:49 --> 00:14:52 turn their health around at midlife, and how
00:14:52 --> 00:14:57 do you help them push through? Well, I see a
00:14:57 --> 00:15:00 lot of women, they get frustrated with the diet
00:15:00 --> 00:15:03 culture, things like those fast picks and things
00:15:03 --> 00:15:07 like that. Okay, I want to lose 10 pounds, but
00:15:07 --> 00:15:10 they don't know about how to go about doing it,
00:15:10 --> 00:15:15 make it a habit, right? So basically... Let's
00:15:15 --> 00:15:18 say, okay, let's say if they're eating a bowl
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 of cereal for breakfast, that's not really going
00:15:20 --> 00:15:24 to help with them. Okay, let's say, like what
00:15:24 --> 00:15:27 I did, I took the bowl of cereal, replaced it
00:15:27 --> 00:15:30 with maybe some yogurt and some berries in the
00:15:30 --> 00:15:35 morning. So little things like that. Until they
00:15:35 --> 00:15:39 get into a habit of doing that, then we can look
00:15:39 --> 00:15:41 at something else, like right foods are going
00:15:41 --> 00:15:43 to help you lose weight. It's going to help you
00:15:43 --> 00:15:48 with more energy, sustain it more. Overall, well,
00:15:48 --> 00:15:54 be good. Do you have a favorite client story
00:15:54 --> 00:15:57 that shows what's possible when women start working
00:15:57 --> 00:16:00 with their bodies instead of against them? Not
00:16:00 --> 00:16:03 at this time. I don't have any clients at this
00:16:03 --> 00:16:07 time, but I do go to a group called Aquafet.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:10 you know, beside Lyons here. And a lot of women,
00:16:10 --> 00:16:13 they ask me that, oh, you look wonderful. You
00:16:13 --> 00:16:16 know, so I'll give people little tips here and
00:16:16 --> 00:16:19 there. And they really appreciate it. So not
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 at this time. Not at this time. I don't have
00:16:22 --> 00:16:25 any. Yeah, you're influencing people when you
00:16:25 --> 00:16:28 talk to them. Yeah, yeah. So I'm always out and
00:16:28 --> 00:16:31 about. And I usually go for a 30 -minute walk
00:16:31 --> 00:16:34 in the morning. I meet people and people. like,
00:16:34 --> 00:16:37 coffee shops or, let's say, the gym today. There
00:16:37 --> 00:16:40 was a young girl in there today, and I see, you
00:16:40 --> 00:16:42 know, she's crying. And she was telling me she
00:16:42 --> 00:16:45 had a scar on her arm because she got in a car
00:16:45 --> 00:16:48 accident. And I go, how the hell does that affect
00:16:48 --> 00:16:51 you? So she was telling me, you know, kind of
00:16:51 --> 00:16:54 slow her down and that. She's probably in her
00:16:54 --> 00:16:58 20s, early 30s. So, you know, it's just like,
00:16:58 --> 00:17:01 but it's nice to have conversation and tell her
00:17:01 --> 00:17:04 that I'm a health coach. I'm here to support
00:17:04 --> 00:17:08 you in any way you can. So word of mouth really
00:17:08 --> 00:17:11 helps. I love going out and talk to people. Years
00:17:11 --> 00:17:14 ago, I was so shy. I wouldn't hardly even talk
00:17:14 --> 00:17:16 to anybody. But, you know, going out and making
00:17:16 --> 00:17:21 new friends. Lady in the coffee shop gave me
00:17:21 --> 00:17:23 her number the other day, and we're probably
00:17:23 --> 00:17:26 going to, she's in her 80s, and she didn't look
00:17:26 --> 00:17:29 like it. And we got chatting, and I'll probably
00:17:29 --> 00:17:31 go to coffee or out for breakfast one morning.
00:17:31 --> 00:17:34 And so she goes, wow, you're a health coach.
00:17:34 --> 00:17:37 Wow. So, yeah. So I'm just trying to get the
00:17:37 --> 00:17:41 word out right now. Yeah, for sure. If you could
00:17:41 --> 00:17:44 stand on a rooftop with a megaphone and bust
00:17:44 --> 00:17:47 one myth about women's metabolism or aging, what
00:17:47 --> 00:17:53 would it be? Oh, the idea of, okay, just do this
00:17:53 --> 00:17:55 one exercise. You're going to lose that belly
00:17:55 --> 00:18:00 fat. All these cardio. It's just like, no, we
00:18:00 --> 00:18:03 need to lift weights, really, because that's
00:18:03 --> 00:18:06 your key point. Lift weights two to three times
00:18:06 --> 00:18:10 a week. Do cardio, you know, walking or if you're
00:18:10 --> 00:18:14 going to the gym. Like, I do a lot of at -home
00:18:14 --> 00:18:20 stuff, like body squats, walk squats. lunges,
00:18:20 --> 00:18:23 you know, you don't, you can do them periodically
00:18:23 --> 00:18:26 throughout the day. You don't have to do them
00:18:26 --> 00:18:28 all at once. A lot of women say, okay, I don't
00:18:28 --> 00:18:31 have time for exercise. Well, I'm in the back
00:18:31 --> 00:18:34 and brushing my teeth and I'm doing toe raises.
00:18:34 --> 00:18:37 I've been having like knee issues and that. Most
00:18:37 --> 00:18:42 of it's, I would say 75 % of it, I feel the exercises
00:18:42 --> 00:18:47 and the right. Like I take omega -3s, so I know
00:18:47 --> 00:18:50 that really helps. My doctor was pleased with
00:18:50 --> 00:18:53 me, the receptionist, because they want to put
00:18:53 --> 00:18:56 me on cholesterol meds. And last time I got my
00:18:56 --> 00:19:00 blood tested, she goes, whatever you're doing,
00:19:00 --> 00:19:03 keep on doing it. It went down. So it's just
00:19:03 --> 00:19:07 like, yeah. That's great. When will you be done
00:19:07 --> 00:19:12 your course? Well, it's self -paced, so you can
00:19:12 --> 00:19:18 do it. however long it takes you to like so you're
00:19:18 --> 00:19:21 finished so if stuff pays you can go at at your
00:19:21 --> 00:19:23 own pace some people did it in four months i
00:19:23 --> 00:19:27 did it like this is two two years two years i've
00:19:27 --> 00:19:30 been at it so i'm kind of like yeah so i'm on
00:19:30 --> 00:19:33 pace with the course is what you're saying yeah
00:19:33 --> 00:19:37 yeah that's the one part of tn um nutrition that's
00:19:37 --> 00:19:41 really amazing there's always support there There's
00:19:41 --> 00:19:46 somebody to answer questions. We have a Facebook.
00:19:46 --> 00:19:49 No, they have a YouTube thing that we can, you
00:19:49 --> 00:19:52 know, they do webinars and things like that just
00:19:52 --> 00:19:56 to get with the other coaches. So that's what
00:19:56 --> 00:19:59 I love. It's just like, oh, my gosh, I didn't
00:19:59 --> 00:20:02 know how my science was going at first. It kind
00:20:02 --> 00:20:05 of overwhelmed me. And then I go, okay, it's
00:20:05 --> 00:20:07 a little video. Well, when you're older, it's
00:20:07 --> 00:20:12 not as easy to learn, is it? No. I hear you there.
00:20:12 --> 00:20:15 It's sort of like you have to reinforce things,
00:20:15 --> 00:20:19 but that's wonderful that you are updating your
00:20:19 --> 00:20:22 knowledge. You're trying to learn new things
00:20:22 --> 00:20:24 still, because that's really good for the mind,
00:20:24 --> 00:20:29 isn't it? Oh, it is. I'm joking with my husband,
00:20:29 --> 00:20:31 right? He'll sit there. He's kind of a junk food
00:20:31 --> 00:20:33 thing, right? But I got him on the raw honey,
00:20:33 --> 00:20:38 thanks to your husband, Dave. I mean, Yeah, he
00:20:38 --> 00:20:41 had no idea the difference. I'm going, see the
00:20:41 --> 00:20:45 difference? Yeah, the peanut butter instead of
00:20:45 --> 00:20:48 the crappy kind. It's just like, yeah, I'm always
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 reading. The difference is in the certain foods
00:20:49 --> 00:20:51 that are out there. You have to know which ones
00:20:51 --> 00:20:54 to get for sure. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I had to do
00:20:54 --> 00:20:57 a lot of reading, like reading, and then I get
00:20:57 --> 00:21:01 articles in my email, so I'm reading that. the
00:21:01 --> 00:21:04 PubMed articles in there. Keep up with everything.
00:21:05 --> 00:21:08 Yeah, I noticed that the group, they put out
00:21:08 --> 00:21:11 a lot of PubMed articles, which are quite interesting.
00:21:11 --> 00:21:15 I've seen that from your LinkedIn page. Yeah.
00:21:15 --> 00:21:17 I read the headlines. I don't really have time
00:21:17 --> 00:21:19 to read the whole article, but the headlines
00:21:19 --> 00:21:23 are quite interesting. Well, yeah, that's what
00:21:23 --> 00:21:25 I do, too. I don't have time to read everybody's
00:21:25 --> 00:21:28 article either, so I just kind of highlight it
00:21:28 --> 00:21:31 over. But I found, like, The crucified vegetables,
00:21:31 --> 00:21:34 like your broccoli, your cauliflower, things
00:21:34 --> 00:21:36 like that, really helped me when I was having
00:21:36 --> 00:21:39 fatty liver. So that and olive oil, it really,
00:21:39 --> 00:21:44 like foods, like I heard the saying, foods heal,
00:21:44 --> 00:21:46 right? And I'm going, foods heal? I used to think
00:21:46 --> 00:21:50 that was crazy. My daughter had ADHD when she
00:21:50 --> 00:21:52 was growing up, right? And I'm going, no way,
00:21:52 --> 00:21:54 no way. I thought it was crazy. But, you know,
00:21:55 --> 00:21:57 after so many years and research and everything
00:21:57 --> 00:22:02 else. Yeah, it's amazing how far science has
00:22:02 --> 00:22:06 come in food and that. Yeah. And when you're
00:22:06 --> 00:22:09 not coaching or diving into your studies, what's
00:22:09 --> 00:22:11 your favorite way to recharge and keep your health
00:22:11 --> 00:22:16 in check? Basically, I love walking. I'll go,
00:22:16 --> 00:22:18 like, in the morning, I'll do a half an hour
00:22:18 --> 00:22:22 walk. And then that or going to the gym, I found
00:22:22 --> 00:22:27 that's my stress relief. I like doing that. Personal
00:22:27 --> 00:22:30 development books, I like to dive into those
00:22:30 --> 00:22:34 sometimes too. And of course, family. My daughter
00:22:34 --> 00:22:36 is about 10 minutes away. I like to get with
00:22:36 --> 00:22:40 her once in a while. And she's got a small little
00:22:40 --> 00:22:43 kitty cat that I like to play with. So those
00:22:43 --> 00:22:46 are the kind of things I like to do. If you could
00:22:46 --> 00:22:49 give one piece of advice to every woman hitting
00:22:49 --> 00:22:55 50, what would it be? Check the foods. I mean,
00:22:55 --> 00:22:58 check the ingredients on the labels. Like, find
00:22:58 --> 00:23:01 out if you can't pronounce it, don't eat it.
00:23:01 --> 00:23:05 So that's probably my biggest thing I learned.
00:23:07 --> 00:23:10 Unless it's from a strange country. Oh, that's
00:23:10 --> 00:23:13 true. Yeah, yeah. You have to find out what it
00:23:13 --> 00:23:16 was. There's a lot of foods out there you can't
00:23:16 --> 00:23:18 pronounce that are probably really healthy for
00:23:18 --> 00:23:23 you. Yeah, I know. Like the American diet. I
00:23:23 --> 00:23:25 know what you mean. You're talking about fillers
00:23:25 --> 00:23:28 and things like that. Oh, yeah, fillers, seed
00:23:28 --> 00:23:32 oils and all that. They pretend that's sugar.
00:23:32 --> 00:23:36 I have a little bit of sugar, and I have a treat
00:23:36 --> 00:23:40 once in a while. I love date squares. Dates are
00:23:40 --> 00:23:42 one of the best things to eat. That's my excuse,
00:23:43 --> 00:23:47 yeah. I eat dates all the time. That's my treat.
00:23:48 --> 00:23:51 I have dates and nuts, a handful of nuts, so
00:23:51 --> 00:23:54 it's like, okay. Yeah, I had dates for my breakfast
00:23:54 --> 00:23:59 when I break my fast, yeah. Yeah. Karen, thank
00:23:59 --> 00:24:02 you so much for sharing your story, your knowledge,
00:24:02 --> 00:24:04 and your passion for helping women take charge
00:24:04 --> 00:24:08 of their health. Talking with Karen Miller today
00:24:08 --> 00:24:12 has been such an uplifting experience. She reminded
00:24:12 --> 00:24:16 us that women over 50 don't have to accept the
00:24:16 --> 00:24:21 myth. of a metabolism reset with the proper habits
00:24:21 --> 00:24:26 such as nourishing food, mindful eating, regular
00:24:26 --> 00:24:31 movement, strength training, restful sleep, and
00:24:31 --> 00:24:34 stress recovery, we can work with our bodies
00:24:34 --> 00:24:38 to feel vibrant and confident again. Karen's
00:24:38 --> 00:24:41 journey is what makes her message so meaningful.
00:24:42 --> 00:24:46 After her parents celebrated 50 years of marriage,
00:24:46 --> 00:24:50 Tragedy struck when her father passed away from
00:24:50 --> 00:24:54 cancer. Karen found the maturity to step in and
00:24:54 --> 00:24:57 support her mom through that heartbreaking time
00:24:57 --> 00:25:02 out of her own grief. She began a healing journey,
00:25:02 --> 00:25:05 learning how nutrition and lifestyle could transform
00:25:05 --> 00:25:10 her health. That's what inspired her to train
00:25:10 --> 00:25:13 as a women's health coach. Although she's still
00:25:13 --> 00:25:16 in training, she's already sharing a wealth of
00:25:16 --> 00:25:20 valuable insight through her own lived experience.
00:25:21 --> 00:25:25 I also love that Karen is realistic. She reminds
00:25:25 --> 00:25:28 us that health isn't about perfection and weight
00:25:28 --> 00:25:31 loss isn't always guaranteed. Our genetics, hormones,
00:25:32 --> 00:25:35 and many other factors play a role. What matters
00:25:35 --> 00:25:38 most is building habits that help us sleep better,
00:25:38 --> 00:25:43 manage stress, Feel stronger and regain energy.
00:25:43 --> 00:25:47 The number on the scale doesn't define success.
00:25:48 --> 00:25:52 Your vitality and confidence do. Her message
00:25:52 --> 00:25:56 is clear. Midlife can be a fresh start, not a
00:25:56 --> 00:26:00 finish line. It's never too late to reset, rebuild,
00:26:01 --> 00:26:04 and thrive. If you'd like to connect with Karen,
00:26:04 --> 00:26:28 you can find her on LinkedIn at To learn more
00:26:28 --> 00:26:31 about her health coaching programs and resources,
