00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 Welcome to Where Science Meets Self -Care with
00:00:03 --> 00:00:06 Ida Fanelli. With over 30 years in beauty and
00:00:06 --> 00:00:09 wellness and a background in medical science,
00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 Ida blends clinical knowledge with holistic care.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:16 Each week, she and her guests share insights
00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 to help you achieve healthier skin, balanced
00:00:19 --> 00:00:23 energy, and empowered self -care. Now, here's
00:00:23 --> 00:00:32 your host, Ida Fanelli. let's examine something
00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 that often gets overlooked especially in health
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 care caregiving and wellness sleep deprivation
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 i'm not just talking about missing a night of
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 sleep now and then I mean the kind of deep ongoing
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 exhaustion that comes from working night shifts
00:00:50 --> 00:00:55 caring for young kids or living in a realm that
00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 never seems to slow down i went through this
00:00:58 --> 00:01:03 myself 40 years ago working in a lab from 11
00:01:03 --> 00:01:07 p .m to 7 a .m the only upside was that i stayed
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 slim during those shifts but really we've gotten
00:01:11 --> 00:01:14 used to treating sleep deprivation like something
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 to be proud of and you know what no one ever
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 taught us how to really adjust to shift work
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 we've learned how to deliver results and save
00:01:23 --> 00:01:27 lives but not how to look after our own emotions
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 or health I've seen this with my clients too.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 Some are so sleep deprived they fall asleep in
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 the middle of a facial. One client told me she
00:01:38 --> 00:01:41 got into a car accident driving to see a friend
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 after a night shift because she thought she was
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 fine. Spoiler alert, she wasn't. The biggest
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 threat to your beauty, brain and body isn't what
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 you eat or put on your skin. It's what you're
00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 missing when you don't get enough sleep. In this
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 piece, I'll look at how sleep affects your emotions,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:06 hormones, guts, skin, and mood. Since I love
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 combining science with holistic self -care, I'll
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 also share some traditional Chinese medicine
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 insights like why certain organs get stressed
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 when you're not sleeping at the right time and
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 how you can support your body even if your schedule
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 doesn't match your natural rhythm. The Architecture
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 of Sleep Our bodies cycle through distinct stages
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 to repair process and restore themselves throughout
00:02:32 --> 00:02:37 the night. Stage 1. Light sleep. Begins right
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 after you fall asleep and represents no more
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 than 5 % of sleep time. Stage 2. The deeper level
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 of sleep accounts for approximately 45 % of sleep
00:02:49 --> 00:02:54 time. This number increases as you age. It is
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 necessary for memory. Storage and learning. Stage
00:02:58 --> 00:03:02 3. The deepest level of sleep represents 25 %
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 of sleep time. It decreases as you age. Lightning
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 can strike and you just can't wake somebody up
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 in this stage. REM sleep. Rapid eye movement
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 sleep occurs in the dream stage after the first
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 three stages are complete. Stages 1 through REM.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 Repeat over the night and most people have four
00:03:23 --> 00:03:27 or five sleep cycles over eight hours. Optimal
00:03:27 --> 00:03:31 bed positioning to improve sleep and brain drainage.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 Did you know how you lie down affects how well
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 your body resets? Sleep posture immediately affects
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 your breathing, spinal adjustments, and cellular
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 waste clearance. Side sleeping, left or right
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 side. This is the ultimate posture for brain
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 detox. Optimal glymphatic clearance works best
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 when we sleep without interruptions on our left
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 or right side. It keeps the airways open and
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 allows cerebral spinal fluid to sweep away waste
00:04:02 --> 00:04:07 thoroughly. Sleeping on your back. It doesn't
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 drain well when we sleep face up. While back
00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 sleeping supports natural spine alignment, glymphatic
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 clearance is less sufficient. and it can increase
00:04:17 --> 00:04:22 snoring or respiratory disturbances stomach sleeping
00:04:22 --> 00:04:26 the least ideal posture sleeping face down strains
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 the neck with stress deep diaphragmatic breathing
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 and prevents your spinal cord and airway from
00:04:32 --> 00:04:36 resting naturally what are the symptoms of sleep
00:04:36 --> 00:04:42 deprivation daytime sleepiness fatigue irritability
00:04:42 --> 00:04:47 trouble thinking focusing and remembering, delayed
00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 reaction times, headaches, health conditions
00:04:51 --> 00:04:55 affected by sleep deprivation breathing. Proper
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 rest and breathing affect each other. Sleep apnea,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 midnight sneezing, and coughing from respiratory
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 infections and bronchitis prevent adequate rest
00:05:05 --> 00:05:09 and can worsen existing lung issues. Digestion
00:05:09 --> 00:05:13 and metabolism. Leptin, which requires sufficient
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 vitamin D, signals your brain to suppress your
00:05:17 --> 00:05:20 appetite, long -term heart health, and circulatory
00:05:20 --> 00:05:24 system issues such as stroke, high blood pressure,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:27 and high cholesterol. Without enough sleep and
00:05:27 --> 00:05:31 adequate vitamin D, your brain reduces leptin
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 and raises ghrelin, stimulating your appetite.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 Sleep deprivation suppresses insulin after eating.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 causing your blood sugar glucose levels to rise
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 and increasing insulin resistance which can lead
00:05:45 --> 00:05:49 to diabetes mellitus and obesity heart and circulatory
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 system decreases the cardiovascular system's
00:05:52 --> 00:05:57 ability to recover and reconstruct the real science
00:05:57 --> 00:06:01 of beauty sleep let's clear something up Beauty
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 sleep isn't just a catchy phrase. It's a real
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 nightly process that helps your body recharge
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 while you're dreaming. Your body is hard at work
00:06:09 --> 00:06:13 behind the scenes. Here's what's happening. Cell
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 production doubles during deep sleep, churning
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 out collagen, your magical scaffolding protein
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 to keep your skin firm, smooth, and resilient.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:25 Your body also releases an all -star hormone
00:06:25 --> 00:06:29 lineup. human growth hormone which helps repair
00:06:29 --> 00:06:33 your skin is released to rebuild tissue and firm
00:06:33 --> 00:06:37 up your face melatonin helps you sleep and protects
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 your skin from aging and free radical damage
00:06:40 --> 00:06:43 when cortisol is balanced everything functions
00:06:43 --> 00:06:47 well but if you're sleep deprived it can cause
00:06:47 --> 00:06:51 breakouts redness and inflammation and don't
00:06:51 --> 00:06:55 forget testosterone yes women need it too you
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 need at least three hours of uninterrupted sleep
00:06:57 --> 00:07:01 to produce it testosterone is important for tissue
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 repair muscle tone and keeping your skin looking
00:07:04 --> 00:07:08 youthful the pituitary gland and exercise also
00:07:08 --> 00:07:12 help release it but sleep is essential if you're
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 not getting enough sleep you'll notice dark circles
00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 along with pale dull skin thinning hair droopy
00:07:18 --> 00:07:22 eyelids and downturned mouth corners the price
00:07:22 --> 00:07:26 of late nights When you don't get enough rest,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 your skin suffers. Staying up late damages your
00:07:29 --> 00:07:32 skin's moisture barrier, increases oil production,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:35 and leaves you with pale, dull skin, droopy eyelids,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 and dark circles that concealers can't hide.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 Sleep is truly your skin's most affordable and
00:07:42 --> 00:07:46 effective anti -aging treatment. So next time
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 you want to watch just one more late night episode,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:52 remember, sleep is your skin's most affordable
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 and effective anti -aging treatment. And your
00:07:55 --> 00:07:59 face will thank you for it. Brain wiring with
00:07:59 --> 00:08:03 lymphatics. Researchers at the University of
00:08:03 --> 00:08:06 Virginia found concealed lymphatic vessels lining
00:08:06 --> 00:08:09 the brain's meninges. These vessels, now known
00:08:09 --> 00:08:13 as the glymphatic system, detoxify the brain
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 and regulate inflammation and immune balance,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:20 mood inflammation, and immune dysfunction. Research
00:08:20 --> 00:08:24 demonstrates a connection between poor lymphatic
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 drainage and neuroinflammation, a key driver
00:08:27 --> 00:08:31 in mental health challenges. A recent meta -analysis
00:08:31 --> 00:08:35 revealed Inflammation and immune dysregulation
00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 potentially caused by poor lymphatic flow are
00:08:38 --> 00:08:42 central to many psychiatric conditions. Immune
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 system. Sleep deprivation causes your body's
00:08:45 --> 00:08:48 immune defenses against infections to fail. The
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 importance of the lymphatic system in the brain
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 wash cycle. Lymph vessels in the brain connect
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 and drain into the cerebrospinal fluid, CSF.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:02 in the sagittal and transverse sinuses which
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 are now considered the main routes for toxins
00:09:05 --> 00:09:09 waste products and emotional impressions the
00:09:09 --> 00:09:12 glymphatic system cleanses itself during deep
00:09:12 --> 00:09:16 sleep when brain cells shrink during rest cerebral
00:09:16 --> 00:09:19 spinal fluid sweeps through the brain to clear
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 waste and bring clarity effective regulation
00:09:21 --> 00:09:25 and neurological resilience Optimal glymphatic
00:09:25 --> 00:09:28 clearance works best when we sleep without interruptions
00:09:28 --> 00:09:32 on our left or right side. It doesn't drain well
00:09:32 --> 00:09:36 when we sleep face up. Emotional Imprints and
00:09:36 --> 00:09:40 Trauma Storage If the glymphatic flow stagnates,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:43 emotions imprinted in the waxy myelin sheaths
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 of the brain's white matter may lead to unstable
00:09:46 --> 00:09:50 moods or brain fog. Supporting steady glymphatic
00:09:50 --> 00:09:54 flow helps promote mental clarity, positive mood,
00:09:54 --> 00:09:57 balance, and overall emotional resilience. Good
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 night's sleep gives time for congested trauma
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 to detox and promotes mental and emotional health
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 and healing. Nervous system, the pain is more
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 intense for people who lack sleep. Mental health
00:10:09 --> 00:10:12 concerns, your mental health strongly affects
00:10:12 --> 00:10:15 your sleep and vice versa. Depression makes it
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 harder to sleep, which increases the effects
00:10:18 --> 00:10:21 of depression. Other mental health issues that
00:10:21 --> 00:10:24 can alter sleep include the following, panic
00:10:24 --> 00:10:28 disorder, impatience or mood swings, mania in
00:10:28 --> 00:10:32 bipolar people, post -traumatic stress disorders
00:10:32 --> 00:10:38 ptsd somniphobia fear of sleep depression anxiety
00:10:38 --> 00:10:43 psychosis conditions paranoia impulsive behavior
00:10:43 --> 00:10:47 suicidal thoughts metabolic conditions that can
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 get worse or happen because of sleep deprivation
00:10:50 --> 00:10:54 type 2 diabetes onset a lack of sleep promotes
00:10:54 --> 00:10:58 laziness and exercise Over time, obesity and
00:10:58 --> 00:11:01 weight gain occur because one does not burn enough
00:11:01 --> 00:11:05 calories and build muscle mass. Sleep deprivation
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 varies depending on the cause and duration. The
00:11:08 --> 00:11:11 longer it lasts, the more severe the effects.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:15 No two individuals duplicate their symptoms.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:19 There are four stages of sleep deprivation. Stage
00:11:19 --> 00:11:25 1. Lack of sleep for 24 hours mimics unsafe alcohol
00:11:25 --> 00:11:29 abuse. uncontrollable eye movements, trouble
00:11:29 --> 00:11:33 speaking clearly, drooping eyelids, hand tremors,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:38 reduced judgment, impulsive reckless behavior.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:43 Stage 2. Most people start to have microsleeps.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:46 or they unconsciously fall asleep for a few seconds
00:11:46 --> 00:11:50 these unintentional lapses can lead to injury
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 and danger especially when driving or operating
00:11:53 --> 00:11:56 heavy machinery they also have trouble concentrating
00:11:56 --> 00:12:01 or making decisions stage three people demonstrate
00:12:01 --> 00:12:05 visual and touch based hallucinations they may
00:12:05 --> 00:12:09 be unable to communicate with others stage four
00:12:09 --> 00:12:12 The above three symptoms escalate. The victim
00:12:12 --> 00:12:15 struggles to tell what's real and what isn't.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:18 Sleep deprivation can occur for medical concerns,
00:12:19 --> 00:12:22 sleep apnea, brain disorders like Alzheimer's
00:12:22 --> 00:12:26 or Parkinson's, traumatic brain injuries, pain,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:31 insomnia, restless leg syndrome, disruptive sleep
00:12:31 --> 00:12:38 disorders, medicine, stimulants, and more. Short
00:12:38 --> 00:12:41 -term illnesses and infections include the common
00:12:41 --> 00:12:45 cold, the flu, and more. And now we'll take time
00:12:45 --> 00:12:49 for a commercial break. Welcome back. The design
00:12:49 --> 00:12:55 of our brain. The hypothalamus' SCN suprachiasmatic
00:12:55 --> 00:12:59 nucleus is our internal body clock, regulating
00:12:59 --> 00:13:02 the body's sleep, wake, cycle, and circadian
00:13:02 --> 00:13:06 rhythms. The pineal gland responds to the SEN
00:13:06 --> 00:13:09 signals and produces melatonin, which helps regulate
00:13:09 --> 00:13:13 sleep -wake patterns. It regulates physiological
00:13:13 --> 00:13:16 and behavioral actions, including alertness,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:19 sleep, temperature control, and hormone production.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:24 Natural light and dark cycles run on a 24 -hour
00:13:24 --> 00:13:27 schedule. When it's dark or your eyes close,
00:13:27 --> 00:13:31 the circadian pacemaker releases melatonin, the
00:13:31 --> 00:13:35 sleep hormone, from the pineal gland. It makes
00:13:35 --> 00:13:39 the body feel more tired and increases the need
00:13:39 --> 00:13:42 to sleep. Melatonin, which is in every cell of
00:13:42 --> 00:13:45 your body and regulates the circadian rhythm,
00:13:45 --> 00:13:49 the body clock, may play a role in the body's
00:13:49 --> 00:13:52 repair of DNA damage from normal cellular processes.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:56 The over activation of melatonin during active
00:13:56 --> 00:14:00 or working hours can also mix up your sleep cycle.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:04 Supplemental melatonin is not the same as natural
00:14:04 --> 00:14:08 melatonin received from the sun. The moon's placement
00:14:08 --> 00:14:12 also influences our sleep. The moon's lunar cycle
00:14:12 --> 00:14:16 changes shape in eight phases every 29 .5 days
00:14:16 --> 00:14:21 as it orbits the earth. Growth is termed waxing
00:14:21 --> 00:14:26 and shrinking is termed waning. It affects energy,
00:14:26 --> 00:14:30 mood, and even sleep patterns. The presence of
00:14:30 --> 00:14:33 the full moon can make it harder to fall asleep
00:14:33 --> 00:14:37 and bring more vivid dreams. Its brightness may
00:14:37 --> 00:14:41 affect melatonin, your sleep hormone. The invisible
00:14:41 --> 00:14:45 new moon promotes deeper rest, low energy and
00:14:45 --> 00:14:49 deeper introspective mood. The moon rises above
00:14:49 --> 00:14:52 50 minutes later each night, shifting the length
00:14:52 --> 00:14:56 of its visible time, affecting sleep, timing
00:14:56 --> 00:15:00 and light exposure. How do we reduce the risk
00:15:00 --> 00:15:04 of developing sleep deprivation? Exercise, yoga,
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 walking, dancing, and getting some fresh air.
00:15:07 --> 00:15:11 Understand sleeping pills versus natural sleep.
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 Prescription sleeping pills and sedatives do
00:15:14 --> 00:15:18 not replicate natural sleep. They act as neural
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 sedatives that suppress brain activity rather
00:15:20 --> 00:15:24 than allowing your body to cycle naturally through
00:15:24 --> 00:15:28 stage 3, deep sleep, and REM. Because they alter
00:15:28 --> 00:15:32 natural sleep architecture, sedative sleep lacks

00:32:18 --> 00:32:21 when driving or operating machinery within two
00:32:21 --> 00:32:24 hours of taking it and it should not be combined
00:32:24 --> 00:32:28 with alcohol or other sedative health products
00:32:29 --> 00:32:33 If you enjoy a warm mug of golden milk before
00:32:33 --> 00:32:35 bed, you're giving your body a great ritual.
00:32:35 --> 00:32:39 The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is
00:32:39 --> 00:32:42 a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce systemic
00:32:42 --> 00:32:45 and neural inflammation. Combined with a warm,
00:32:46 --> 00:32:49 soothing drink, it helps signal to your body
00:32:49 --> 00:32:52 that it's time to wind down. Just remember a
00:32:52 --> 00:32:55 quick tip. Raw turmeric isn't absorbed well on
00:32:55 --> 00:32:58 its own. Always pair it with a pinch of black
00:32:58 --> 00:33:02 pepper or a healthy fat like a warm coconut or
00:33:02 --> 00:33:06 almond milk to boost its absorption. And if you're
00:33:06 --> 00:33:10 already taking creatine monohydrate for muscle
00:33:10 --> 00:33:13 strength, here's a cool extra benefit. It can
00:33:13 --> 00:33:16 actually help soften the blow of a bad night's
00:33:16 --> 00:33:19 sleep. Creatine replenishes your cellular ATP
00:33:19 --> 00:33:24 energy reserves including in the brain while
00:33:24 --> 00:33:27 it won't replace a solid eight hours or make
00:33:27 --> 00:33:30 you sleepy at night so research shows it helps
00:33:30 --> 00:33:35 buffer brain fog keeping your focus sharp and
00:33:35 --> 00:33:38 those mornings when you're running on empty another
00:33:38 --> 00:33:41 powerful ally for your nervous system is ashwagandha
00:33:41 --> 00:33:45 a classic adaptogenic herb traditionally used
00:33:45 --> 00:33:48 to help your body adapt to everyday stress its
00:33:48 --> 00:33:52 key active compounds work by toning down overactive
00:33:52 --> 00:33:55 evening cortisol levels, helping to relieve physical
00:33:55 --> 00:33:59 restlessness and nervousness so your body can
00:33:59 --> 00:34:02 naturally drift off to sleep. Once your evening
00:34:02 --> 00:34:05 routine is set, it helps to understand what's
00:34:05 --> 00:34:08 happening in your brain. And that brings us to
00:34:08 --> 00:34:13 GABA, your nervous system's primary calming neurotransmitter.
00:34:13 --> 00:34:17 Think of GABA as your brain's natural brake pedal.
00:34:17 --> 00:34:21 Once stress -erasing thoughts keep you awake,
00:34:21 --> 00:34:26 GABA steps in to quiet overactive neurons so
00:34:26 --> 00:34:30 you can shift into rest and digest mode. Supporting
00:34:30 --> 00:34:32 your GABA pathways, whether through adaptogens
00:34:32 --> 00:34:36 like ashwagandha, cofactors like magnesium glycinate
00:34:36 --> 00:34:41 or L -theanine, or simple deep breathing, doesn't
00:34:41 --> 00:34:44 just quiet a racing mind, it also helps ease
00:34:44 --> 00:34:47 overall physical muscle tension so you can sink
00:34:47 --> 00:34:51 into restorative sleep. In fact, if you want
00:34:51 --> 00:34:55 a completely free tool to support relaxation
00:34:55 --> 00:34:58 right in bed, turn to targeted breathing techniques.
00:34:58 --> 00:35:02 My absolute favorite is the 4 -7 -8 method. Inhale
00:35:02 --> 00:35:06 quietly through your nose for 4 seconds, hold
00:35:06 --> 00:35:09 for 7 seconds, and exhale slowly through your
00:35:09 --> 00:35:13 mouth for a full 8 seconds. That long extended
00:35:13 --> 00:35:16 exhale triggers your vagus nerve, slows your
00:35:16 --> 00:35:18 heart rate, and shifts your body into rest mode.
00:35:19 --> 00:35:21 Just a quick word of caution on breath work.
00:35:22 --> 00:35:25 Save high intensity techniques like the Wim Hof
00:35:25 --> 00:35:30 method for your morning routine. Rapid hyperventilation
00:35:30 --> 00:35:34 spikes adrenaline and cortisol to wake you up.
00:35:34 --> 00:35:38 For sleep, you want slow exhales to signal to
00:35:38 --> 00:35:42 your brain and body that it's safe to surrender
00:35:42 --> 00:35:45 to rest. And now we'll take time for a commercial
00:35:45 --> 00:35:50 break. Welcome back. Use of light to stimulate
00:35:50 --> 00:35:54 sleep. Increase bright white light exposure with
00:35:54 --> 00:35:58 your shift with the following. Light therapy
00:35:58 --> 00:36:01 box, a bright desk lamp and overhead lights.
00:36:01 --> 00:36:05 They stimulate daylight to make up for lost sunlight.
00:36:06 --> 00:36:09 Intermittent exposure to bright white light can
00:36:09 --> 00:36:13 help as much as continual exposure. Blue LED
00:36:13 --> 00:36:16 light signals to the brain that it is daytime,
00:36:16 --> 00:36:20 which can reduce sleep quality while warm LED
00:36:20 --> 00:36:23 light helps you sleep. Avoid blue light from
00:36:23 --> 00:36:28 street lights and digital devices. Or use apps
00:36:28 --> 00:36:32 that schedule blue and warm light to cut down
00:36:32 --> 00:36:36 on blue light from electronic screens. Windows
00:36:36 --> 00:36:39 10 or higher has settings to reduce the blue
00:36:39 --> 00:36:42 light emitted by iPhones, Androids, smartphones,
00:36:42 --> 00:36:46 and tablets. Televisions also have these options.
00:36:46 --> 00:36:49 If you don't know how to do it, blue light blocking
00:36:49 --> 00:36:52 glasses can block the blue light emitted by these
00:36:52 --> 00:36:56 devices. Decrease light exposure after your shift
00:36:56 --> 00:36:59 by wearing sunglasses on your journey home to
00:36:59 --> 00:37:02 prevent blue LED streetlights from bothering
00:37:02 --> 00:37:05 you. red light signals to the brain that it is
00:37:05 --> 00:37:09 night time use a red light before going to sleep
00:37:09 --> 00:37:12 to relax dim the lights in your house once it
00:37:12 --> 00:37:15 gets dark outside to signal to your brain that
00:37:15 --> 00:37:19 it's time to wind down digital hiding and bedroom
00:37:19 --> 00:37:24 environment turn off digital devices or place
00:37:24 --> 00:37:27 your phone on silent or airplane mode in another
00:37:27 --> 00:37:31 room to eliminate late night notification sounds
00:37:31 --> 00:37:34 cut down on electronic distractions, and create
00:37:34 --> 00:37:38 a calm environment for rest. Use blackout curtains,
00:37:38 --> 00:37:41 sleep masks, and white noise machines to create
00:37:41 --> 00:37:45 a peaceful sleeping sanctuary free from unwanted
00:37:45 --> 00:37:49 light and sound interruptions. Now let's talk
00:37:49 --> 00:37:52 about the air in your bedroom. You've probably
00:37:52 --> 00:37:56 seen Himalayan salt lamps and air ionizers tooted
00:37:56 --> 00:38:00 online for better sleep. When it comes to salt
00:38:00 --> 00:38:03 lamps, science doesn't back up the idea that
00:38:03 --> 00:38:05 they clean your room's air or release negative
00:38:05 --> 00:38:09 ions a bulb simply can't get hot enough to break
00:38:09 --> 00:38:13 down the solid salt molecules however their cozy
00:38:13 --> 00:38:16 warm ambient light won't disrupt your melatonin
00:38:16 --> 00:38:19 making them a fantastic relaxing night light
00:38:19 --> 00:38:24 pro tip if you have one keep it turned on the
00:38:24 --> 00:38:27 gentle heat keeps the salt warm, which prevents
00:38:27 --> 00:38:30 ambient humidity from melting it and making it
00:38:30 --> 00:38:34 shrink over time. Air ionizers are a bit different.
00:38:35 --> 00:38:38 Many people love them because the negative ions
00:38:38 --> 00:38:41 they release mimic that fresh post -rainstorm
00:38:41 --> 00:38:45 feeling, which can help lower stress and promote
00:38:45 --> 00:38:49 deep relaxation. Today, you'll often find ionizers
00:38:49 --> 00:38:52 built right into modern air purifiers alongside
00:38:52 --> 00:38:55 physical filters. if you choose one of these
00:38:55 --> 00:38:58 hybrid units just make sure it's certified ozone
00:38:58 --> 00:39:03 free as standalone or uncertified ionizers can
00:39:03 --> 00:39:07 emit ozone and irritate your lungs as long as
00:39:07 --> 00:39:10 your unit relies primarily on a true hepa filter
00:39:10 --> 00:39:14 to physically trap dust pollen and allergens
00:39:14 --> 00:39:18 with an ozone -free ionizer as an optional feature,
00:39:18 --> 00:39:21 you get the best of both worlds, crisp, clean
00:39:21 --> 00:39:24 air to breathe and a soothing atmosphere for
00:39:24 --> 00:39:28 sleep. While we're optimizing the bedroom environment,
00:39:28 --> 00:39:31 let's talk about your bedding. Washing your sheets
00:39:31 --> 00:39:35 once a week is a total game changer for sleep
00:39:35 --> 00:39:38 quality. It washes away accumulated dust mites,
00:39:38 --> 00:39:41 dead skin, and micro allergens that cause subtle
00:39:41 --> 00:39:44 nighttime congestion and disrupt your breathing.
00:39:44 --> 00:39:48 you don't always need hot water either washing
00:39:48 --> 00:39:51 in cool or warm water with detergent breaks up
00:39:51 --> 00:39:54 oils and drying your sheets on high heat in the
00:39:54 --> 00:39:58 dryer or letting them dry in direct bright sunlight
00:39:58 --> 00:40:01 will kill off any remaining bacteria and dust
00:40:01 --> 00:40:05 mites pay attention to your fabrics if you tend
00:40:05 --> 00:40:08 to wake up hot trade synthetic materials for
00:40:08 --> 00:40:11 breathable natural fibers like hundred -cent
00:40:11 --> 00:40:15 cotton linen or bamboo They allow proper airflow,
00:40:15 --> 00:40:19 keeping your body at that sweet spot temperature
00:40:19 --> 00:40:23 for deep rest. For a quick beauty sleep upgrade,
00:40:23 --> 00:40:27 consider switching to a silk pillowcase. Unlike
00:40:27 --> 00:40:30 cotton, silk doesn't absorb your skin's natural
00:40:30 --> 00:40:33 oils or night serums, and its smooth texture
00:40:33 --> 00:40:37 creates far less friction, meaning fewer morning
00:40:37 --> 00:40:40 sleep creases and way less hair breakage. Now
00:40:40 --> 00:40:43 let's talk about the foundation of your bed.
00:40:43 --> 00:40:47 Setup. Your pillow and mattress. Your pillow
00:40:47 --> 00:40:50 isn't just about comfort. It's crucial for neck
00:40:50 --> 00:40:53 alignment and brain drainage. As we talked about
00:40:53 --> 00:40:56 earlier, optimal lymphatic clearance works best
00:40:56 --> 00:40:59 when you're sleeping on your side. A supportive
00:40:59 --> 00:41:03 pillow keeps your spine neutrally aligned and
00:41:03 --> 00:41:06 your airway wide open so your body can rest efficiently,
00:41:06 --> 00:41:09 just like your sheets. Make sure you wash your
00:41:09 --> 00:41:13 pillows regularly. Most washable pillows should
00:41:13 --> 00:41:16 be laundered every three to six months to clear
00:41:16 --> 00:41:19 out trapped sweat, oils, and dust mites. Even
00:41:19 --> 00:41:22 with regular washing, pillows lose their structural
00:41:22 --> 00:41:25 support over time, so plan to replace them entirely
00:41:25 --> 00:41:29 every one to two years. As for your mattress,
00:41:29 --> 00:41:31 if you're waking up with lower back stiffness,
00:41:31 --> 00:41:35 shoulder pressure or feeling constantly overheated,
00:41:35 --> 00:41:39 it might be past its prime. Most mattresses last
00:41:39 --> 00:41:42 about 7 to 10 years and finding the right firmness
00:41:42 --> 00:41:45 to support your body alignment makes all the
00:41:45 --> 00:41:47 difference for staying in deep sleep throughout
00:41:47 --> 00:41:50 the night. Finally, you might hear people raving
00:41:50 --> 00:41:54 about trendy bed tech online, like copper -infused
00:41:54 --> 00:41:57 sheets or grounding pads that plug into your
00:41:57 --> 00:42:00 outlets to connect to the earth's electrical
00:42:00 --> 00:42:04 charge. While copper is naturally antibacterial
00:42:04 --> 00:42:07 and many find grounding pads relaxing, the scientific
00:42:07 --> 00:42:11 evidence for anti -aging or major sleep gains
00:42:11 --> 00:42:14 from either is pretty limited. If you use a grounding
00:42:14 --> 00:42:18 pad, just ensure your outlets are properly wired
00:42:18 --> 00:42:21 for safety. At the end of the day, stick with
00:42:21 --> 00:42:24 breathable natural fabrics. Keep up with those
00:42:24 --> 00:42:28 regular washes and enjoy that feeling of slipping
00:42:28 --> 00:42:31 into crisp, clean bedding. It's the ultimate
00:42:31 --> 00:42:34 signal to your brain and nervous system that
00:42:34 --> 00:42:38 it's time to settle in. Other ways to calm the
00:42:38 --> 00:42:42 mind. The vagus nerve plays a central role in
00:42:42 --> 00:42:44 your parasympathetic nervous system, helping
00:42:44 --> 00:42:48 support your body's natural ability to relax.
00:42:48 --> 00:42:51 As you can see in the diagram to my left, this
00:42:51 --> 00:42:54 incredible nerve extends all the way from the
00:42:54 --> 00:42:58 brain down into the gut. When we have good vagal
00:42:58 --> 00:43:00 tone, it improves your heart rate variability
00:43:00 --> 00:43:05 or HRV, which is a key marker of how well your
00:43:05 --> 00:43:09 body handles stress and resets itself. It also
00:43:09 --> 00:43:12 manages your main organs in a very specific way.
00:43:12 --> 00:43:15 The left side feeds the front of the organs in
00:43:15 --> 00:43:19 your thoracic cavity. while the right side feeds
00:43:19 --> 00:43:22 and controls the back. You can encourage a sense
00:43:22 --> 00:43:25 of calm along this pathway through gentle manual
00:43:25 --> 00:43:29 massage around the neck and ear area. There are
00:43:29 --> 00:43:32 also videos demonstrating massages you can do
00:43:32 --> 00:43:35 to stimulate your vagus nerve on the internet
00:43:35 --> 00:43:38 as well. Wellness tools designed for relaxation
00:43:38 --> 00:43:42 are simple vocal exercises like humming, singing
00:43:42 --> 00:43:46 and chanting. pairing these gentle vocal vibrations
00:43:46 --> 00:43:50 with deep breathing works wonders. You can also
00:43:50 --> 00:43:53 apply a drop of diluted essential oils like lavender,
00:43:54 --> 00:43:57 rose, or chamomile behind your ears or diffuse
00:43:57 --> 00:44:01 it into your room while you breathe to signal
00:44:01 --> 00:44:04 to your brain that it's time to unwind. Three
00:44:04 --> 00:44:09 eye exercises to help sleep easier. Gently close
00:44:09 --> 00:44:13 your eyes and roll them upward. downward and
00:44:13 --> 00:44:17 sideways. This exercise can relieve eye muscle
00:44:17 --> 00:44:22 tension and trigger melatonin release. I've practiced
00:44:22 --> 00:44:24 these eye rolling techniques before and after
00:44:24 --> 00:44:27 meditations, and they help cleanse the chakras
00:44:27 --> 00:44:31 in the eyes. Rub your hands together to create
00:44:31 --> 00:44:34 warmth, then place the base of your palms over
00:44:34 --> 00:44:38 your closed eyes. The heat helps soothe and relax
00:44:38 --> 00:44:42 the eye muscles. Close your eyes gently and take
00:44:42 --> 00:44:46 a few deep breaths. Then slowly roll your eyes
00:44:46 --> 00:44:50 upward imagining looking toward your forehead.
00:44:50 --> 00:44:54 Hold for a few seconds then return to the resting
00:44:54 --> 00:44:59 position. Repeat several times. Eye rolling stimulates
00:44:59 --> 00:45:01 the parasympathetic nervous system and the production
00:45:01 --> 00:45:05 of alpha waves encouraging a relaxed sleep ready
00:45:05 --> 00:45:09 state. I practice these eye exercises before
00:45:09 --> 00:45:13 and after some meditations. They help me connect
00:45:13 --> 00:45:17 more intimately with stillness. Conclusion If
00:45:17 --> 00:45:20 any of this sounds familiar, remember there's
00:45:20 --> 00:45:23 no shame in it, simply awareness. And with awareness
00:45:23 --> 00:45:27 comes power. Your body notices when you're not
00:45:27 --> 00:45:30 getting enough rest. Your nervous system, gut,
00:45:30 --> 00:45:33 immune system, skin and emotions all respond
00:45:33 --> 00:45:36 to it. The good news is that it's never too late
00:45:36 --> 00:45:39 to start making changes. You don't have to change
00:45:39 --> 00:45:43 everything at once. Start with small steps. Sleep
00:45:43 --> 00:45:47 isn't just rest. It's your reset. It's when your
00:45:47 --> 00:45:51 body repairs itself. Your brain clears out waste
00:45:51 --> 00:45:55 and your spirit has time to recover. Try putting
00:45:55 --> 00:45:59 your phone away before bed. Think about grounding,
00:45:59 --> 00:46:02 breathing exercises, herbal support, lymphatic
00:46:02 --> 00:46:05 drainage, foods that boost melatonin, nervous
00:46:05 --> 00:46:08 system resets, light exposure, and respecting
00:46:08 --> 00:46:12 your natural sleep rhythm, even if it means doing
00:46:12 --> 00:46:15 things differently from others. If you work night
00:46:15 --> 00:46:19 shifts, keep in mind that research shows people
00:46:19 --> 00:46:22 who use bright white light during their shift
00:46:22 --> 00:46:24 and wear sunglasses on the way home, get more
00:46:24 --> 00:46:28 sleep than those who don't. I'm sharing these
00:46:28 --> 00:46:30 tips so you can protect your health while doing
00:46:30 --> 00:46:34 your job. Your body knows what it needs, your
00:46:34 --> 00:46:37 skin reacts to how you treat it, and your mind
00:46:37 --> 00:46:40 and spirit benefit from real rest. Thanks for
00:46:40 --> 00:46:43 spending time with me today. If you found this
00:46:43 --> 00:46:46 helpful, share it with a friend who could use
00:46:46 --> 00:46:49 some rest. Or even better, send it to your favorite
00:46:49 --> 00:46:53 night shift. worker. Let's help make rest a priority
00:46:53 --> 00:46:57 in a world which often celebrates burnout. Till
00:46:57 --> 00:47:00 next time, sleep well, stay radiant and keep
