Discover why the rise of modern, laboratory-centred medicine involved far more than just "better science." In 1910, the landmark Flexner Report fundamentally redefined modern healthcare—placing intense political and financial pressure on holistic systems, classical homeopathy, and energy medicine.
In this episode of Where Science Meets Self-Care, host Ida Fanelli sits down with Amanda Cowlrick, a New Zealand-based entrepreneur-turned-holistic practitioner and founder of Replenish Healing®. Amanda shares her inspiring journey of leaving a decades-long career in accounting in her mid-forties to master natural, holistic therapeutics.
Together, they dive into:
The science of individualization in natural medicine; the history and politics that reshaped modern healthcare; practical insights into Classical Homeopathy, Reiki, and the indigenous lineage of Atua Healing®. How to build an autonomous, empowered framework for your personal self-care

00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 Welcome to Where Science Meets Self -Care with
00:00:03 --> 00:00:06 Ida Fanelli. With over 30 years in beauty and
00:00:06 --> 00:00:09 wellness and a background in medical science,
00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 Ida blends clinical knowledge with holistic care.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:16 Each week, she and her guests share insights
00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 to help you achieve healthier skin, balanced
00:00:19 --> 00:00:23 energy, and empowered self -care. Now, here's
00:00:23 --> 00:00:33 your host, Ida Finelli. story of modern medicine
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 is incomplete. Maybe the rise of scientific medicine
00:00:37 --> 00:00:41 involved more than just better science. Power,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:45 funding, and influence also affected what counted
00:00:45 --> 00:00:50 as real healing. In the early 20th century, a
00:00:50 --> 00:00:53 key moment changed not just how medicine was
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 practiced, but also which medical systems were
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 allowed to continue. Before the early 1900s,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:03 North American healthcare treated conventional
00:01:03 --> 00:01:08 medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, osteopathy,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:11 herbal medicine, and other traditions as equals.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:16 Many educated and influential people supported
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 homeopathic hospitals, schools, and pharmacies.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:23 The public often viewed homeopathy as a gentler
00:01:23 --> 00:01:26 and sometimes wiser alternative to the harsher
00:01:26 --> 00:01:31 treatments of the time. It is ironic that John
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 D. Rockefeller, a key figure in forming 20th
00:01:35 --> 00:01:40 century medical philanthropy, relied on homeopathic
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 doctors throughout his life. He was not the only
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 one. Many well -known Americans in business,
00:01:47 --> 00:01:51 culture, and industry also chose homeopathic
00:01:51 --> 00:01:55 care. Homeopathy was respected. and had a real
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 place in medicine integrated into the health
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 care choices of many influential families. In
00:02:02 --> 00:02:07 1910, Abraham Flexner's report was noted for
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 changing medical education in the United States
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 and Canada. It pushed for higher standards, tougher
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 training, better facilities, and a stronger focus
00:02:17 --> 00:02:21 on laboratory science. Medicine needed these
00:02:21 --> 00:02:26 reforms. These goals made sense, especially since
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 standards varied and some schools lacked good
00:02:28 --> 00:02:33 equipment. New discoveries in physiology, pathology,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 and bacteriology were also changing how people
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 understood disease. But the Fluxner Report did
00:02:40 --> 00:02:43 more than just raise standards. It changed the
00:02:43 --> 00:02:47 very definition of medicine. It promoted a model
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 that was based in labs, controlled by universities,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 centered in hospitals and focused on biology.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:57 Medicine became linked with measurable experimental
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 science. Any approach that did not fit this model
00:03:01 --> 00:03:05 was simply seen as different. It was considered
00:03:05 --> 00:03:11 inferior. Homeopathy, naturopathy, eclectic medicine,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:15 chiropractic and other methods were labeled as
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 unscientific or illegitimate. This transformation
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 did not happen in isolation. This change did
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 not happen on its own. It came from a strong
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 mix of educational reform, professional politics
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 and influence from wealthy donors. The American
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 Medical Association, the Carnegie Foundation
00:03:36 --> 00:03:40 and Rockefeller -backed groups all helped shape
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 the new medical system. The AMA had fought homeopathy
00:03:44 --> 00:03:49 for years. One of its main tools was the consultation
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 clause, which punished doctors for working with
00:03:53 --> 00:03:57 homeopaths. Sometimes just talking to the wrong
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 kind of practitioner could hurt a doctor's career
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 more than actually harming patients. This shows
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 the fight wasn't just about science, but also
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 about control, territory, and money. Its membership
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 increased, it built a strong financial foundation
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 through advertising revenue and influence over
00:04:18 --> 00:04:22 professional standards. At the same time, medical
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 reformers argued that America had too many doctors
00:04:25 --> 00:04:30 and too many competing schools of thought. Reducing
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 that number, especially by eliminating what they
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 considered irregular medicine, would give conventional
00:04:36 --> 00:04:39 physicians greater authority, greater demand,
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 and greater control over the profession. The
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 Flexner report is often described as neutral,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 but it was closely tied to the goals of organized
00:04:49 --> 00:04:53 medicine. Flexner worked with AMA leaders and
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 evidence showed the Carnegie Foundation and the
00:04:56 --> 00:05:00 MA worked closely together while pretending to
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 be independent. This is important because it
00:05:03 --> 00:05:07 contests the usual story. The report was not
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 solely a fair survey that let the best ideas
00:05:10 --> 00:05:14 win. It was part of a bigger political and institutional
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 effort that favored biomedical science. The effects
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 were huge. Homeopathic schools lost support.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:26 had to change their programs or close completely.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 Schools for women and black students were also
00:05:29 --> 00:05:34 hit hard. Many women's medical colleagues and
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 most black medical schools closed after the Flexner
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 Report. The new medical field became smaller,
00:05:41 --> 00:05:45 richer, more alike, and more focused on biomedical
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 science. Schools that once taught homeopathy
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 dropped the word from their name and cut back
00:05:52 --> 00:05:56 on homeopathic courses to survive. Over time,
00:05:56 --> 00:06:00 this weakened the tradition. By the mid -1900s,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 homeopathic medical education in North America
00:06:03 --> 00:06:07 was almost gone. Ironically, Rockefeller himself
00:06:07 --> 00:06:11 liked homeopathy and thought homeopathic institutions
00:06:11 --> 00:06:15 deserved fair treatment. but his advisor Frederick
00:06:15 --> 00:06:20 T. Gates criticized homeopathy and guided Rockefeller's
00:06:20 --> 00:06:24 donations towards biomedical groups. Gates strongly
00:06:24 --> 00:06:27 opposed homeopathy and supported what he called
00:06:27 --> 00:06:31 scientific medicine. The foundations Rockefeller
00:06:31 --> 00:06:35 funded did not support homeopathy. In the end,
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 Rockefeller's money helped drive a medical change
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 that left out the kind of care he trusted most.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:45 This history shows that medicine is determined
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 by more than just evidence. Money, institutions,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:53 politics, professional groups, and culture all
00:06:53 --> 00:06:58 play a part. What survives is not always what
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 works best, but what powerful systems choose
00:07:01 --> 00:07:05 to support. This way of thinking also influenced
00:07:05 --> 00:07:09 research, biological models and science behind
00:07:09 --> 00:07:13 psychiatry and mental health care especially
00:07:13 --> 00:07:17 in hospitals still psychiatry knows that human
00:07:17 --> 00:07:20 suffering is not only about chemistry or tissue
00:07:20 --> 00:07:25 emotional trauma relationships environment meaning
00:07:25 --> 00:07:28 and life experience all affect mental health
00:07:28 --> 00:07:32 these things do not fit neatly into the lab model
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 Over time, this showed the limits of a purely
00:07:36 --> 00:07:40 reductionist approach. By the mid -1900s and
00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 after the social changes of the 1960s, more people
00:07:44 --> 00:07:50 began to question medicine's narrow focus. Psychosomatic
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 medicines, wellness models, humanistic medicine,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:57 and other whole -person approaches challenged
00:07:57 --> 00:08:00 the idea that health is not only about organs,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:04 germs, or biology. This led to new interest in
00:08:04 --> 00:08:08 complementary and integrated medicine. The goal
00:08:08 --> 00:08:12 was to broaden medicine's perspective. More practitioners
00:08:12 --> 00:08:16 and research started to ask if healing also depends
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 on context, relationship, meaning, lifestyle,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:24 and the patient's own ability to recover. Institutions
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 such as the National Institute of Health began
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 funding complementary approaches. Integrative
00:08:30 --> 00:08:33 medicine and later integrated mental health brought
00:08:33 --> 00:08:37 patient -centered mind -body connections, lifestyle,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:40 medicine, and some complementary therapies into
00:08:40 --> 00:08:44 mainstream conversations. However, it also favored
00:08:44 --> 00:08:47 conventional biomedical models at the expense
00:08:47 --> 00:08:51 of others, excluding rival forms of healing more
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 by institutional force than by open debate history
00:08:55 --> 00:08:59 still matters today we can talk about many different
00:08:59 --> 00:09:02 kinds of health care we now see that a patient
00:09:02 --> 00:09:06 is not simply a diagnosis a lab result or a group
00:09:06 --> 00:09:10 of organs each patient is a whole person living
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 in a biological physiological social and sometimes
00:09:13 --> 00:09:17 spiritual world the future of medicine may not
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 turn away from science, but it could help science
00:09:20 --> 00:09:24 become more honest, humble, and open. The Flexner
00:09:24 --> 00:09:28 Report did more than change medicine. It changed
00:09:28 --> 00:09:32 what medicine was allowed to be. Knowing this
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 history does not weaken science. It makes it
00:09:34 --> 00:09:38 stronger. Real science should not fear questioning
00:09:38 --> 00:09:42 the forces which shaped it or admitting that
00:09:42 --> 00:09:46 evidence and power often go hand in hand. For
00:09:46 --> 00:09:49 medicine to keep growing, it must remember both
00:09:49 --> 00:09:53 what it gained and what it may have lost. Wellness
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 models and support from the NIH for complementary
00:09:56 --> 00:10:01 and alternative medicine reopen the field. Now
00:10:01 --> 00:10:04 integrative medicine intends to blend evidence
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 -based conventional care with certain complementary
00:10:07 --> 00:10:11 therapies. In the end, the paper takes a balanced
00:10:11 --> 00:10:16 position. Flexners reformed improved rigors and
00:10:16 --> 00:10:19 standards in medicine, but they also made the
00:10:19 --> 00:10:22 definition of real healing too narrow. Today,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:25 psychiatry and medicine are moving towards a
00:10:25 --> 00:10:31 wider biopsychosocial or biopsychosocial spiritual
00:10:31 --> 00:10:35 model. Evidence remains important, but there
00:10:35 --> 00:10:39 is now a greater focus on patient contacts. whole
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 person care and carefully studied complementary
00:10:41 --> 00:10:45 approaches. We seek a time when care is defined
00:10:45 --> 00:10:50 not just by power, but by possibility. This raises
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 a question. What happens to these approaches
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 after they are pushed out of the institution?
00:10:55 --> 00:10:58 Do they disappear or do they quietly continue
00:10:58 --> 00:11:02 through the work of practitioners who still believe
00:11:02 --> 00:11:06 in them? To explore that, I'll be sitting down
00:11:06 --> 00:11:10 with Amanda Kalbrick. whose work reflects a modern
00:11:10 --> 00:11:13 continuation of these holistic approaches. And
00:11:13 --> 00:11:16 now we'll take time for a commercial break. Welcome
00:11:16 --> 00:11:19 back. Amanda is the founder of Replenish Healing,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 a holistic healing practice based in Auckland,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:25 New Zealand, offering homeopathy, Reiki, and
00:11:25 --> 00:11:30 Atua healing in both clinic and distant. formats
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 her path into holistic healing was not a casual
00:11:33 --> 00:11:36 one it grew from a lifelong personal interest
00:11:36 --> 00:11:39 in natural health beginning in her teenage years
00:11:39 --> 00:11:43 and later deepened into formal study and professional
00:11:43 --> 00:11:48 practice amanda holds a diploma in acute prescribing
00:11:48 --> 00:11:53 using homeopathy a diploma in chronic prescribing
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 using homeopathy from the college of natural
00:11:55 --> 00:11:59 health and homeopathy is a reiki master and a
00:11:59 --> 00:12:03 practitioner of atuya healing she is also registered
00:12:03 --> 00:12:06 with the new zealand council of homeopath is
00:12:06 --> 00:12:09 affiliated with reiki new zealand incorporated
00:12:09 --> 00:12:13 and has served in leadership's roles there including
00:12:13 --> 00:12:18 vice chair membership or database management
00:12:18 --> 00:12:21 and web development. She became an executive
00:12:21 --> 00:12:26 contributor on Brains Magazine in 2024. She has
00:12:26 --> 00:12:29 also been involved in professional pod meetings
00:12:29 --> 00:12:32 and conferences that support the wider homeopathy
00:12:32 --> 00:12:35 and Reiki communities in New Zealand. What makes
00:12:35 --> 00:12:38 Amanda's story especially compelling is that
00:12:38 --> 00:12:41 before moving into this field full -time, she
00:12:41 --> 00:12:44 had a background in accounting and business across
00:12:44 --> 00:12:47 several industries. She brought that practical
00:12:47 --> 00:12:51 grounded experience into her healing work, creating
00:12:51 --> 00:12:54 a space that is both heart -centered and professionally
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 structured. I personally know Amanda. She is
00:12:57 --> 00:13:01 a fellow member of the International Order fantastic
00:13:01 --> 00:13:05 professionals now before we begin I want to say
00:13:05 --> 00:13:08 something from my own perspective I have had
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 experience with both homeopathy and energy medicine
00:13:11 --> 00:13:14 so I'm not as skeptical as some people may be
00:13:14 --> 00:13:18 I do believe that in many cases it is necessary
00:13:18 --> 00:13:21 to experience something for yourself to understand
00:13:21 --> 00:13:25 its value and potential benefits At the same
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 time, I also believe in thoughtful discussion,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:31 personal responsibility, and understanding where
00:13:31 --> 00:13:34 different modalities may fit with a person's
00:13:34 --> 00:13:38 broader wellness journey. Amanda, welcome. I'm
00:13:38 --> 00:13:41 so glad to have you here. Thank you, Ida. It's
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 great to be able to catch up in an environment
00:13:44 --> 00:13:47 like this where it kind of feels like we're having
00:13:47 --> 00:13:52 a chat. Yeah. Amanda. For those meeting you for
00:13:52 --> 00:13:55 the first time, can you tell us a little about
00:13:55 --> 00:13:58 yourself and the path that led you into holistic
00:13:58 --> 00:14:02 healing? So yeah, first off, as you mentioned
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 earlier, I am based in Auckland, New Zealand,
00:14:04 --> 00:14:08 which is a long way from a lot of places, but
00:14:08 --> 00:14:11 great that I can do distance healing and things.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:16 I moved into holistic healing in a very well
00:14:16 --> 00:14:19 -grounded way. It's very organic in regards to
00:14:20 --> 00:14:23 starting off in a really young age using homeopathy
00:14:23 --> 00:14:26 and then just was always there in the background
00:14:26 --> 00:14:29 things and then suddenly kind of i don't know
00:14:29 --> 00:14:32 happened without me really being in control of
00:14:32 --> 00:14:34 the whole situation which sounds interesting
00:14:34 --> 00:14:37 and weird but as people know sometimes they're
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 suddenly on a different path and not sure how
00:14:39 --> 00:14:43 they got there well sometimes you know things
00:14:43 --> 00:14:47 just happen and they make you rethink right Absolutely,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:50 yeah. And I do think it was interesting when
00:14:50 --> 00:14:52 it all kind of came into place and I'm like,
00:14:52 --> 00:14:55 oh, I'm doing this. And yeah, I wasn't sure how
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 I'd got there. There had been obviously steps
00:14:57 --> 00:15:01 along the way with that. Okay. You've said your
00:15:01 --> 00:15:04 interest in natural healing began in your teenage
00:15:04 --> 00:15:07 years. Can you share the personal experiences
00:15:07 --> 00:15:10 that first drew you to homeopathy and later inspired
00:15:10 --> 00:15:14 you to pursue it professionally? I used to do
00:15:14 --> 00:15:16 a lot of sport. I was into swimming, represented
00:15:16 --> 00:15:22 the local area in hockey, soccer and things as
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 well. And I had a wrist injury where I had no
00:15:24 --> 00:15:27 support or anything else. I couldn't put weight
00:15:27 --> 00:15:30 on and was sore. So my mum would take me to the
00:15:30 --> 00:15:34 doctors, did x -rays, all them. They said to
00:15:34 --> 00:15:37 me in the end, it's in her head. She needs to
00:15:37 --> 00:15:42 kind of just get over it. This woman had started
00:15:42 --> 00:15:44 working in the women's centre where my mum was
00:15:44 --> 00:15:47 based in another room, and she did homeopathy.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 So I think as a last -ditch attempt, mum was
00:15:50 --> 00:15:53 like, okay, I'm going to take her off to see
00:15:53 --> 00:15:55 this woman. Mum had no idea about homeopathy
00:15:55 --> 00:16:00 either. And Annie did her magic. Are we allowed
00:16:00 --> 00:16:03 to say that about homeopathy? I'm not sure, but
00:16:03 --> 00:16:08 she literally said, it's to do with your ligaments
00:16:08 --> 00:16:13 and your wrist. Gave me some... And I've never
00:16:13 --> 00:16:15 had an issue since. And I was 14 at the time.
00:16:15 --> 00:16:18 So I think that just speaks for itself, really.
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 It shaped your thoughts about it at an early
00:16:22 --> 00:16:25 age. Yeah. Do you want to say anything else?
00:16:26 --> 00:16:29 I was just going to say, I think back then when
00:16:29 --> 00:16:32 things aligned, just with Annie being where she
00:16:32 --> 00:16:35 was and all that, I don't think I would have
00:16:35 --> 00:16:39 heard about homeopathy otherwise. Before stepping
00:16:39 --> 00:16:41 fully into this work, you had a strong background
00:16:41 --> 00:16:45 in business and entrepreneurship. What inspired
00:16:45 --> 00:16:47 you to make such a significant shift into the
00:16:47 --> 00:16:53 healing field? How do I put this? It all just
00:16:53 --> 00:16:55 kind of came together. So I'd always kind of
00:16:55 --> 00:16:58 started working in my own business and things
00:16:58 --> 00:17:02 like that. I'd had my own restaurant with a group
00:17:02 --> 00:17:06 of people. We'd set that up. I'm not always very
00:17:06 --> 00:17:10 good at following the rules. So for me, working
00:17:10 --> 00:17:13 on my own is great because it means I can do
00:17:13 --> 00:17:15 what I think needs to be done and all that. And
00:17:15 --> 00:17:18 so going in, I was helping small business. I
00:17:18 --> 00:17:21 was making sure their accounts and policies and
00:17:21 --> 00:17:24 everything were updated because I've always found
00:17:24 --> 00:17:27 that people have great ideas, but if they don't
00:17:27 --> 00:17:30 implement the whole structure around that, then
00:17:30 --> 00:17:34 their business goes under or... things like that
00:17:34 --> 00:17:36 so I saw that as kind of a helping thing as well
00:17:36 --> 00:17:40 but from there it just organically happened that
00:17:40 --> 00:17:43 I moved into the more holistic side of things
00:17:43 --> 00:17:45 and it's given me the background to be able to
00:17:45 --> 00:17:49 support I still support a small business I do
00:17:49 --> 00:17:52 accounts for a herbalist and things still which
00:17:52 --> 00:17:55 I'll keep my hand in with that side and I think
00:17:55 --> 00:17:59 it helps with my business my The only thing I
00:17:59 --> 00:18:02 have is marketing is not a big strength of mine,
00:18:02 --> 00:18:06 and I know that. It's something I am working
00:18:06 --> 00:18:10 on very slowly. But it does help to do your own
00:18:10 --> 00:18:13 books, doesn't it? It does, and I think people
00:18:13 --> 00:18:17 don't realize the importance of accounts because
00:18:17 --> 00:18:21 basically if the IRD come after you, and I'm
00:18:21 --> 00:18:24 not sure what it is in Canada or America or whatever,
00:18:24 --> 00:18:27 but over here, you don't pay the IRD, your business
00:18:27 --> 00:18:31 ain't going anywhere. So, yeah, no, that's definitely
00:18:31 --> 00:18:34 an advantage. I just do the books for myself.
00:18:35 --> 00:18:37 And I just see the accountant once a year and
00:18:37 --> 00:18:40 usually tells me what mistakes I've made. That's
00:18:40 --> 00:18:42 sort of how it goes. Your business is called
00:18:42 --> 00:18:45 Replenish Healing. What does that name mean to
00:18:45 --> 00:18:48 you? And what is the heart of the work you do
00:18:48 --> 00:18:51 there? Well, it's interesting. Someone else asked
00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 me that question not that long ago, actually.
00:18:53 --> 00:18:56 And I did have to give it some thought because
00:18:56 --> 00:18:59 I think it's Got so many different aspects to
00:18:59 --> 00:19:04 it for me. But basically in, I think I was 29,
00:19:04 --> 00:19:07 I actually had a breakdown. I had been working
00:19:07 --> 00:19:13 100 weeks. I was in quite a high stress environment
00:19:13 --> 00:19:18 and things like that. I was also at the age where
00:19:18 --> 00:19:20 you do a bit of partying. So there was a mix
00:19:20 --> 00:19:24 of things. And literally one morning I woke up
00:19:24 --> 00:19:27 and I was like, I could not get out of bed. and
00:19:27 --> 00:19:30 all that sort of thing. And there's obviously,
00:19:30 --> 00:19:32 if I'd looked back and known, I would have seen
00:19:32 --> 00:19:34 that this was probably going to be the outcome
00:19:34 --> 00:19:39 of my lifestyle at the time with the long hours
00:19:39 --> 00:19:43 and things like that. Fortunately, I had income
00:19:43 --> 00:19:46 protection, so I actually took time off and was
00:19:46 --> 00:19:51 able to stop. And I think that's... When I look
00:19:51 --> 00:19:53 back on it, that was probably the start of me
00:19:53 --> 00:19:56 going, I'm going to work for myself. I can control
00:19:56 --> 00:19:58 my hours and all that sort of thing. And it gave
00:19:58 --> 00:20:03 me time to replenish myself, basically, and reflect
00:20:03 --> 00:20:08 on that. And with my business, I want people
00:20:08 --> 00:20:11 to feel comfortable coming to me, having known
00:20:11 --> 00:20:14 my experience, and go, it's actually okay. It's
00:20:14 --> 00:20:18 okay to reset. It's okay to stop. And because
00:20:18 --> 00:20:20 the world's... always about a competition. It's,
00:20:20 --> 00:20:22 you know, we have to work long hours. We have
00:20:22 --> 00:20:24 to do this. And if you step back and go, actually,
00:20:24 --> 00:20:26 I don't want to work long hours. I don't want
00:20:26 --> 00:20:28 to be doing all that. Sometimes it's frowned
00:20:28 --> 00:20:31 upon. And basically, I want people to feel safe
00:20:31 --> 00:20:35 here, be able to do that replenishing in a space
00:20:35 --> 00:20:39 where they don't actually have to say anything
00:20:39 --> 00:20:44 or justify or feel judged by it. um so for me
00:20:44 --> 00:20:47 that's where it's come from um and i think it's
00:20:47 --> 00:20:53 also around doing healing in a slow and non -dynamic
00:20:53 --> 00:20:56 way because often it can be you can do it softly
00:20:56 --> 00:20:59 you don't need to go in and throw lots of drugs
00:20:59 --> 00:21:01 at it or anything else and mask what's happening
00:21:01 --> 00:21:04 because if you do that you're actually not healing
00:21:04 --> 00:21:08 you're actually suppressing and it's two different
00:21:08 --> 00:21:12 things um with the body and It will catch up
00:21:12 --> 00:21:16 with you at some stage if you are doing the suppressing
00:21:16 --> 00:21:18 rather than allowing the body to go through its
00:21:18 --> 00:21:22 natural healing process. Yeah, you have to give
00:21:22 --> 00:21:26 the body energy to heal itself rather than mixing
00:21:26 --> 00:21:29 up its signals, which is what some medicines
00:21:29 --> 00:21:32 do. They just mix up the signals to make things
00:21:32 --> 00:21:36 work. You offer homeopathy, Reiki, and Atua healing.
00:21:37 --> 00:21:40 What makes this combination of modalities unique,
00:21:40 --> 00:21:43 and how do you decide which approach may best
00:21:43 --> 00:21:48 suit a particular client? I think often the body
00:21:48 --> 00:21:52 knows. So I've had people sometimes go, oh, come
00:21:52 --> 00:21:55 on to your website to see you for this, and then
00:21:55 --> 00:21:57 they're going, somehow I've chosen a different
00:21:57 --> 00:22:00 modality or whatever. Our bodies do know what
00:22:00 --> 00:22:04 we need, and that's stopping again and just listening.
00:22:05 --> 00:22:09 is actually okay um i have clients that have
00:22:09 --> 00:22:13 come to me for homeopathy and one client in particular
00:22:13 --> 00:22:15 i said hey do you want to try a bit of reiki
00:22:15 --> 00:22:18 and he was like okay so i popped him on the bed
00:22:18 --> 00:22:20 for 10 minutes he rang me the next day and goes
00:22:20 --> 00:22:22 i don't know what that thing you bought that
00:22:22 --> 00:22:24 you did to me yesterday but can i book him for
00:22:24 --> 00:22:27 some more of that so we worked homeopathy and
00:22:27 --> 00:22:30 reiki with him and it was just really nice seeing
00:22:30 --> 00:22:33 that change and it I think they both support
00:22:33 --> 00:22:35 each other because they're both energy medicines.
00:22:36 --> 00:22:39 But the energy with Reiki opens up the body to
00:22:39 --> 00:22:43 accept the homeopathy more deeply and things
00:22:43 --> 00:22:46 like that. So I think it kind of helps the healing
00:22:46 --> 00:22:48 process a little bit more. And not everyone needs
00:22:48 --> 00:22:52 that. And I have to be intuitive on that as well,
00:22:52 --> 00:22:54 what my clients need sometimes, because some
00:22:54 --> 00:22:58 of them don't know what homeopathy is or what
00:22:58 --> 00:23:01 Reiki is. They've heard people talk negatively
00:23:01 --> 00:23:04 about one or other, and so they come in with
00:23:04 --> 00:23:07 a pre -perceived idea about that. Well, we'll
00:23:07 --> 00:23:11 try to clear some of that up today. Yeah. And
00:23:11 --> 00:23:15 now we'll take time for a commercial break. Welcome
00:23:15 --> 00:23:18 back. Okay, so for listeners who may be unfamiliar
00:23:18 --> 00:23:21 with homeopathy, how do you explain its core
00:23:21 --> 00:23:24 philosophy, including the principle often described
00:23:24 --> 00:23:28 as likes cure like? Yeah, so obviously homeopathy
00:23:28 --> 00:23:32 has been around for about 250 years now, and
00:23:32 --> 00:23:35 the core philosophy behind it is around the minimum
00:23:35 --> 00:23:38 dose. So we want to basically say to someone,
00:23:38 --> 00:23:40 well, work with someone and say, look, we're
00:23:40 --> 00:23:42 going to give you the minimum amount that your
00:23:42 --> 00:23:46 body needs for the minimum amount of time so
00:23:46 --> 00:23:49 that we can move your body into balance or homeostasis.
00:23:50 --> 00:23:54 then helps the body regulate itself and move
00:23:54 --> 00:23:57 towards healing. And light cures like back in
00:23:57 --> 00:24:00 the day when Hahnemann was working with somebody
00:24:00 --> 00:24:06 and he decided to try bark from a certain tree.
00:24:06 --> 00:24:09 And from that, he thought, oh, that's interesting.
00:24:09 --> 00:24:11 It's really better. It's like this. And so he
00:24:11 --> 00:24:16 then really looking into the idea of if something
00:24:16 --> 00:24:22 produces something in the body. So it's not making
00:24:22 --> 00:24:24 the body ill, but it produces symptoms like that.
00:24:24 --> 00:24:27 Would it cure when the body has those symptoms?
00:24:27 --> 00:24:31 So that was really the whole start of homeopathy
00:24:31 --> 00:24:33 around that light cures light. So it's kind of
00:24:33 --> 00:24:36 like if you get a bee sting and you get a red
00:24:36 --> 00:24:40 bump and things like that. We now use APIS, which
00:24:40 --> 00:24:44 is the bee, when people have symptoms that are
00:24:44 --> 00:24:47 similar to a bee sting or something like that.
00:24:47 --> 00:24:51 Yeah. Can you explain how homeopathic remedies
00:24:51 --> 00:24:53 are prepared, including the idea of dilution
00:24:53 --> 00:24:58 and succussion? Yeah. And why that process is
00:24:58 --> 00:25:00 considered important within homeopathic practice?
00:25:01 --> 00:25:04 So generally, the homeopathic remedies are prepared
00:25:04 --> 00:25:08 through a process called potatization, and that
00:25:08 --> 00:25:12 involves, obviously, serial dilution and succussion.
00:25:12 --> 00:25:15 which is when you do vigorous shaking and often
00:25:15 --> 00:25:17 it's just banging it on your hand like that,
00:25:17 --> 00:25:19 but they have machines that do it these days.
00:25:19 --> 00:25:23 And this came about when Hahnemann would go out
00:25:23 --> 00:25:27 to see his clients. And he would have his vials
00:25:27 --> 00:25:31 in the horse, on the back of the horse or whatever,
00:25:31 --> 00:25:35 and he noticed that if the horse moving or the
00:25:35 --> 00:25:37 carriage said actually these remedies had more
00:25:37 --> 00:25:42 impact on the client than the ones that hadn't
00:25:42 --> 00:25:44 been through that process. That's interesting,
00:25:44 --> 00:25:49 I didn't know that. Yeah, so that's what brought
00:25:49 --> 00:25:54 that around. And we have remedies that go from
00:25:54 --> 00:25:57 like, you know, Q1 or an LM and things which
00:25:57 --> 00:26:03 are very, very low up to 10M, which is, how do
00:26:03 --> 00:26:05 I explain that? That's been through the process
00:26:05 --> 00:26:07 a certain amount of times and I think I probably
00:26:07 --> 00:26:10 won't go into it too much. For a lot of people,
00:26:10 --> 00:26:15 it would just be a bit overwhelming. But basically,
00:26:15 --> 00:26:18 we have trituration, which is if we take something
00:26:18 --> 00:26:22 like a rock or a seashell or something like that,
00:26:22 --> 00:26:25 and they get ground down into lactose, so it's
00:26:25 --> 00:26:27 mixed with milk sugar to break them down before
00:26:27 --> 00:26:31 they're then dissolved in liquid. So that's part
00:26:31 --> 00:26:35 of the process as well. And then we end up, like
00:26:35 --> 00:26:38 often homeopaths, Like myself, we use a mother
00:26:38 --> 00:26:41 tincture, which we then will put through into
00:26:41 --> 00:26:44 a remedy for our clients and things like that.
00:26:44 --> 00:26:47 Or a client can just go and buy the remedy that's
00:26:47 --> 00:26:50 already prepared. Yeah, the mother tincture is
00:26:50 --> 00:26:54 the strongest form. Yes, it is. So you could
00:26:54 --> 00:26:57 just use drops of that, is what you're saying,
00:26:57 --> 00:27:01 right? Yeah, so you get the... You take the mother
00:27:01 --> 00:27:04 tincture and you will put that either into alcohol
00:27:04 --> 00:27:07 -based or glucose -based or you can use it on
00:27:07 --> 00:27:10 your pillules. And you buy that in like a 30C,
00:27:10 --> 00:27:13 12C or whatever it is that you're going to generally
00:27:13 --> 00:27:17 need. 30C is a kind of mid -range. Generally
00:27:17 --> 00:27:19 considered that a lot of people just use for
00:27:19 --> 00:27:22 acutes and things like that. And when you move
00:27:22 --> 00:27:24 more into the chronic, then depending on whether
00:27:24 --> 00:27:27 it's mental, emotional, physical and things like
00:27:27 --> 00:27:30 that, then we choose a different patient or potency
00:27:30 --> 00:27:32 for the remedy that we'll use with our client
00:27:32 --> 00:27:37 as well. Yeah. I took a course one time, and
00:27:37 --> 00:27:39 they were saying if you wanted to make something
00:27:39 --> 00:27:43 yourself, you would get the actual herb or whatever
00:27:43 --> 00:27:46 it is, and you would shake it in the bottle with
00:27:46 --> 00:27:49 a whole bunch of water. And then you throw that
00:27:49 --> 00:27:51 out, and then you add more water, and then you
00:27:51 --> 00:27:54 shake it again, and then you do that 100 times,
00:27:54 --> 00:27:58 and you get a very dilute percentage, which is
00:27:58 --> 00:28:03 what you want. Have you ever heard of that? There
00:28:03 --> 00:28:06 are different ways of doing things. So, yeah,
00:28:06 --> 00:28:07 that's one of the ways of doing it. I just wanted
00:28:07 --> 00:28:10 to make it from natural is what I'm seeing instead
00:28:10 --> 00:28:13 of buying it. Yes, yeah, yeah. So you can do
00:28:13 --> 00:28:16 that, and that's part of what people do when
00:28:16 --> 00:28:19 they're doing approving. So they will take a
00:28:19 --> 00:28:22 substance that maybe hasn't been approved in
00:28:22 --> 00:28:25 homeopathy before, and then this is kind of going
00:28:25 --> 00:28:29 into a different territory again. So once I've
00:28:29 --> 00:28:31 set that up and usually they do sit around that
00:28:31 --> 00:28:35 30s there for doing approving and they will then
00:28:35 --> 00:28:39 get a group of volunteers and they'll give everyone
00:28:39 --> 00:28:42 that remedy and they will take and jot down their
00:28:42 --> 00:28:46 responses to that and it'll be often a blind
00:28:46 --> 00:28:49 trial on that and then that's how we figure out
00:28:49 --> 00:28:53 what that remedy may be. work with or who will
00:28:53 --> 00:28:55 work with if someone's having those symptoms
00:28:55 --> 00:28:58 because we've then got a list of them from the
00:28:58 --> 00:29:01 group of people. It's the very basic kind of
00:29:01 --> 00:29:04 thing to discuss rather than getting fully into
00:29:04 --> 00:29:07 the whole thing of it like it's quite a involved
00:29:07 --> 00:29:10 process. Oh sure it is and something else I learned
00:29:10 --> 00:29:14 in the course was that homeopathic remedies never
00:29:14 --> 00:29:19 expire. homeopathy is highly individualized when
00:29:19 --> 00:29:22 two people have the same condition they may still
00:29:22 --> 00:29:25 receive very different remedies how do you determine
00:29:25 --> 00:29:29 what is most appropriate for each person so if
00:29:29 --> 00:29:32 i do a chronic consultation with a client it's
00:29:32 --> 00:29:36 up to an hour and a half and we ask everything
00:29:36 --> 00:29:40 from early childhood experiences, dreams, what
00:29:40 --> 00:29:43 kind of foods they eat, whether possibly, you
00:29:43 --> 00:29:46 know, they're like spicy, salty, sweet, that
00:29:46 --> 00:29:49 sort of thing. We go through bowel motions, if
00:29:49 --> 00:29:50 they're happy to talk about that, if they're
00:29:50 --> 00:29:53 old enough, what their sex life might be like,
00:29:53 --> 00:29:57 how they lie in bed. And so we could literally
00:29:57 --> 00:29:59 go through, I'm not sure how many remedies we've
00:29:59 --> 00:30:03 got now to go through, but you can generally
00:30:03 --> 00:30:07 narrow it down to like maybe 10. or less because
00:30:07 --> 00:30:09 there'd be certain aspects that might come out
00:30:09 --> 00:30:12 in the case and then we repatriate that so we
00:30:12 --> 00:30:15 can either use a system online or we go through
00:30:15 --> 00:30:19 books and homeopaths have a lot of books we have
00:30:19 --> 00:30:26 we buy a lot of books so i can literally go okay
00:30:26 --> 00:30:29 my client dreams about seagulls or crowds or
00:30:29 --> 00:30:31 whatever and it's like okay they match everything
00:30:31 --> 00:30:34 else in this remedy and they match everything
00:30:34 --> 00:30:36 in this remedy oh but this one's got dreams about
00:30:36 --> 00:30:39 seagulls or people so that may be the difference
00:30:39 --> 00:30:43 between two remedies look sometimes we don't
00:30:43 --> 00:30:45 always get it right we might be really close
00:30:45 --> 00:30:48 and there might be a shift and things sometimes
00:30:48 --> 00:30:51 a client will also tell you almost what their
00:30:51 --> 00:30:54 remedy is they'll talk about something and they'll
00:30:54 --> 00:30:58 go oh you know i just really feel like this and
00:30:58 --> 00:31:02 they'll explain a situation or an animal and
00:31:02 --> 00:31:04 things and that so then you can go and look it
00:31:04 --> 00:31:06 up and it'll be like okay they've literally just
00:31:06 --> 00:31:08 told me the remedy you're still going to go off
00:31:08 --> 00:31:11 and do your look at the other remedies that they're
00:31:11 --> 00:31:13 close to just to make sure that you're not going
00:31:13 --> 00:31:15 to just go down the rabbit hole because i've
00:31:15 --> 00:31:17 said that yeah there's a bit of work behind it
00:31:17 --> 00:31:19 it's like they do that hour and a half and then
00:31:19 --> 00:31:22 i might spend two to three hours after that plus
00:31:22 --> 00:31:24 looking up different remedies and everything
00:31:24 --> 00:31:27 else Yeah, I'm sure there's a lot of thought
00:31:27 --> 00:31:32 that have to go into it. The Materia Medica is
00:31:32 --> 00:31:35 so extensive and can feel overwhelming to those
00:31:35 --> 00:31:37 first learning about homeopathy. With so many
00:31:37 --> 00:31:40 remedies and such detailed symptom pictures,
00:31:40 --> 00:31:43 how do you narrow down the right remedy for the
00:31:43 --> 00:31:47 right individual? So the Materia Medica is also
00:31:47 --> 00:31:51 broken down into mind. So you can go in and go,
00:31:51 --> 00:31:54 okay, this is help. their emotional side is.
00:31:54 --> 00:31:58 So then we can go through and sometimes the wording's
00:31:58 --> 00:32:00 a little bit different. Like we try to, if a
00:32:00 --> 00:32:02 client's using certain words, then that's what
00:32:02 --> 00:32:05 we'll try to narrow down to. Sometimes with the,
00:32:05 --> 00:32:08 some of the Materia Medica's are quite old fashioned.
00:32:08 --> 00:32:12 So we have to then go, so what does that, what
00:32:12 --> 00:32:15 did that word mean back in 1920s versus what
00:32:15 --> 00:32:19 it means now as well? And then you've got. like
00:32:19 --> 00:32:21 whether it's left side or right side. So we can
00:32:21 --> 00:32:23 narrow it down through. They usually pick the
00:32:23 --> 00:32:27 top 10 symptoms and things that are coming through
00:32:27 --> 00:32:30 in the picture. And from there, we can start
00:32:30 --> 00:32:33 going through and looking, going, okay, so this
00:32:33 --> 00:32:36 sits with this remedy. And they also have, so
00:32:36 --> 00:32:38 if we were just looking through books and doing
00:32:38 --> 00:32:40 it that way, we'd literally go through your 10
00:32:40 --> 00:32:43 and you'd go and have a look and see which remedies
00:32:43 --> 00:32:47 fall. most often in those 10, and then you can
00:32:47 --> 00:32:50 go through and look, read up on those remedies
00:32:50 --> 00:32:53 itself and see if the overall picture is sitting
00:32:53 --> 00:32:56 in that remedy. So the Materia Medica actually
00:32:56 --> 00:32:59 helps you decide, is what you're saying, the
00:32:59 --> 00:33:03 way it's written? Absolutely. We have lots. You
00:33:03 --> 00:33:06 can't see my bookshelf at the moment. So we have
00:33:06 --> 00:33:09 the Materia Medica, and then from there we have
00:33:09 --> 00:33:12 other books that expand on the remedies, which
00:33:12 --> 00:33:14 will give the history and everything else, because
00:33:14 --> 00:33:17 that can sometimes be important. I've got two
00:33:17 --> 00:33:20 shelves of books just next to me, plus I've got
00:33:20 --> 00:33:23 more in the back room. So when we look at plants,
00:33:23 --> 00:33:27 we'll have books purely based around the plant
00:33:27 --> 00:33:29 remedies, and then we'll have other books that
00:33:29 --> 00:33:32 are based around animal remedies or minerals
00:33:32 --> 00:33:34 and things. So once we've kind of picked that
00:33:34 --> 00:33:36 this person might be a plant, an animal, or a
00:33:36 --> 00:33:39 mineral, we can then drill down further into
00:33:39 --> 00:33:42 that to look at other remedies. Well, that's
00:33:42 --> 00:33:47 interesting. Okay. I once took a short homeopathic
00:33:47 --> 00:33:50 course where it was suggested that trained homeopaths
00:33:50 --> 00:33:53 may observe a person's face and overall presentation
00:33:53 --> 00:33:56 as part of understanding their constitution.
00:33:56 --> 00:34:00 Is facial observation something you also use
00:34:00 --> 00:34:04 in your practice? Yes, it is important because
00:34:04 --> 00:34:09 you can have somebody who may be saying something,
00:34:09 --> 00:34:12 but you can tell that they're still holding back
00:34:12 --> 00:34:15 through their expression and things. tend to
00:34:15 --> 00:34:19 want to do consultations on zoom or mechanisms
00:34:19 --> 00:34:22 or in person rather than just over the phone
00:34:22 --> 00:34:26 because you can't see people's body language
00:34:26 --> 00:34:29 and how people dress can actually indicate a
00:34:29 --> 00:34:32 remedy funnily enough it's like some people don't
00:34:32 --> 00:34:34 like tight things around the neck so they'll
00:34:34 --> 00:34:37 come in more flowy clothes i know of a situation
00:34:37 --> 00:34:40 where a client turned up at the homeopath wearing
00:34:40 --> 00:34:48 full leopard print um outfit and that by narrowing
00:34:48 --> 00:34:50 it down actually that was she was a part of her
00:34:50 --> 00:34:54 animal picture people sometimes actually give
00:34:54 --> 00:34:57 themselves away through that and you might have
00:34:57 --> 00:35:00 a client who'll do protection things if they're
00:35:00 --> 00:35:02 talking about a hard thing they might put something
00:35:02 --> 00:35:04 in front of them like with the arms or a pillow
00:35:04 --> 00:35:09 or something as well so that all leads to more
00:35:09 --> 00:35:14 information itself yeah so absolutely Many people
00:35:14 --> 00:35:17 who use homeopathy feel they've benefited from
00:35:17 --> 00:35:20 it, yet mainstream science does not currently
00:35:20 --> 00:35:23 support it through established physics, chemistry,
00:35:23 --> 00:35:26 or accepted mechanisms, especially given how
00:35:26 --> 00:35:30 highly diluted many remedies are. How do you
00:35:30 --> 00:35:32 respond to those who question how it could work?
00:35:32 --> 00:35:35 I think there's always going to be skeptics,
00:35:35 --> 00:35:39 and to be fair, some people don't follow mainstream
00:35:39 --> 00:35:41 medicine either, so you're always going to get
00:35:41 --> 00:35:45 that on both sides. around the research and things.
00:35:46 --> 00:35:48 There is a lot of research coming out around
00:35:48 --> 00:35:51 homeopathy and things like that. Some of it's
00:35:51 --> 00:35:53 been repeated. I think a lot of people look at
00:35:53 --> 00:35:56 it as like a quantum physics situation around
00:35:56 --> 00:36:00 all memory of water and things like that. And
00:36:00 --> 00:36:03 I think at the end of the day, there is obviously
00:36:03 --> 00:36:07 proven situations where it has worked in the
00:36:07 --> 00:36:11 past very well, she says, around... They get
00:36:11 --> 00:36:14 a mosquito, I think, through there every winter
00:36:14 --> 00:36:16 and things, and people get quite sick from it.
00:36:17 --> 00:36:20 And from that, they actually ended up using homeopathy
00:36:20 --> 00:36:23 and had really good results on that. And they
00:36:23 --> 00:36:26 were looking at using it more often in their
00:36:26 --> 00:36:30 hospitals and things like that. But the USA said
00:36:30 --> 00:36:33 they wouldn't provide any more funding to them
00:36:33 --> 00:36:35 if they were going to be using homeopathy. So
00:36:35 --> 00:36:39 I think there's... Part of the thing around homeopathy
00:36:39 --> 00:36:42 is that it can't be patented, if I said that
00:36:42 --> 00:36:45 right, and the pharmaceuticals can't make money
00:36:45 --> 00:36:49 off it. That's why they don't like it. Yeah.
00:36:50 --> 00:36:54 But it can be sold. I know in our country there's
00:36:54 --> 00:36:57 more regulations on it, like it's still in the
00:36:57 --> 00:37:00 health food stores, but some products aren't
00:37:00 --> 00:37:02 as available. They don't have as much selection
00:37:02 --> 00:37:06 as they used to. Yeah, and a group of people
00:37:06 --> 00:37:09 have been working very hard to remove homeopathy
00:37:09 --> 00:37:12 and things like that. And it's a shame because
00:37:12 --> 00:37:15 I think everyone should be entitled to choose
00:37:15 --> 00:37:19 the modality, I'll say, for their own health.
00:37:19 --> 00:37:23 And if it doesn't work, then that comes back
00:37:23 --> 00:37:25 on the person who's made that choice, I think.
00:37:25 --> 00:37:28 But I think offering something up because lots
00:37:28 --> 00:37:32 of people don't get well on mainstream. In fact,
00:37:32 --> 00:37:34 they end up on more because they have side effects
00:37:34 --> 00:37:37 and things like that. But everyone should be
00:37:37 --> 00:37:38 able to have a choice to choose what they want
00:37:38 --> 00:37:42 to around that. Yeah, and it has years and years
00:37:42 --> 00:37:47 of proven success. Yeah. I was just going to
00:37:47 --> 00:37:49 say, most of the hospitals in America before,
00:37:49 --> 00:37:54 I think it was 1912, were homeopathic until the
00:37:54 --> 00:37:57 Carnegie Report came out. Something for people
00:37:57 --> 00:38:00 to look into. Thank you for telling us about
00:38:00 --> 00:38:04 that. the segment before amanda's introduction
00:38:04 --> 00:38:08 is a summary of the information which are available
00:38:08 --> 00:38:11 on the links which amanda suggested on the history
00:38:11 --> 00:38:14 of medicine which i will place in the description
00:38:14 --> 00:38:16 section and now we'll take time for a commercial
00:38:16 --> 00:38:22 break welcome back for those who may not know
00:38:22 --> 00:38:25 what is that to a healing and how would you describe
00:38:25 --> 00:38:28 its roots principles and the way it works with
00:38:28 --> 00:38:33 a person's energy and well -being So Atoa Healing
00:38:33 --> 00:38:36 actually is New Zealand based and it was founded
00:38:36 --> 00:38:41 by a woman, Carmel, who I actually met years
00:38:41 --> 00:38:44 ago in Kingsland and I have worked with since
00:38:44 --> 00:38:48 then. The principles are based around falling
00:38:48 --> 00:38:52 in ancestral lines, your cheerleading squad,
00:38:52 --> 00:38:55 so to speak, and also working with Maori gods.
00:38:55 --> 00:38:59 So before you start a session, you bring in energy
00:38:59 --> 00:39:02 through that it's and the difference between
00:39:02 --> 00:39:06 that and reiki is that reiki does it works on
00:39:06 --> 00:39:09 just the whole energy level where with our healing
00:39:09 --> 00:39:12 it is based on seven different layers so when
00:39:12 --> 00:39:15 we do an initial consultation with a client we
00:39:15 --> 00:39:19 do muscle testing and we work through the first
00:39:19 --> 00:39:22 seven years next seven years up to where they
00:39:22 --> 00:39:24 are at that point and we work through mental
00:39:24 --> 00:39:27 emotional physical and spiritual to find any
00:39:27 --> 00:39:32 blockages And then we know which layers and levels
00:39:32 --> 00:39:35 we need to go to to work on to help them clear
00:39:35 --> 00:39:39 those blockages. And that's amazing. I love working
00:39:39 --> 00:39:43 with it. The energy is quite different to my
00:39:43 --> 00:39:48 energy when I do Reiki. And, yeah, I just find
00:39:48 --> 00:39:52 it fascinating that, yeah, this New Zealand woman's
00:39:52 --> 00:39:55 come up with this beautiful modality and that
00:39:55 --> 00:39:59 is well -known worldwide. She works with... people
00:39:59 --> 00:40:01 all around the world, so it can be done distance
00:40:01 --> 00:40:06 as well. The Maori is a culture in New Zealand,
00:40:06 --> 00:40:11 correct? Yes, yeah. So they've been in New Zealand
00:40:11 --> 00:40:20 since 700 AD, I think it was. But yeah, and they
00:40:20 --> 00:40:24 have their stories around that, and their gods
00:40:24 --> 00:40:28 are the ones that are brought in. Okay. So you've
00:40:28 --> 00:40:30 talked about Reiki a little bit. Reiki has been
00:40:30 --> 00:40:33 studied for things like relaxation, stress and
00:40:33 --> 00:40:35 pain, but the evidence is still considered mixed
00:40:35 --> 00:40:39 in mainstream science. How do you speak about
00:40:39 --> 00:40:41 Reiki in a way that is both open -minded and
00:40:41 --> 00:40:45 realistic? So there is more research that has
00:40:45 --> 00:40:48 come out. There's actually a recent paper that
00:40:48 --> 00:40:54 was done during COVID around Reiki helping doctors
00:40:54 --> 00:40:57 and nurses and things. work through what they
00:40:57 --> 00:40:59 were going through because it was a massive stress
00:40:59 --> 00:41:01 time for a lot of people and particularly people
00:41:01 --> 00:41:04 in those environments so there's so I look at
00:41:04 --> 00:41:09 research and part of it is you always have to
00:41:09 --> 00:41:11 just bounce off people like when you're talking
00:41:11 --> 00:41:14 with them I had a situation recently with someone
00:41:14 --> 00:41:18 whose knowledge of Reiki was from people around
00:41:18 --> 00:41:22 her and things like that so we had a chat and
00:41:23 --> 00:41:25 I listened to what she had to say, she listened
00:41:25 --> 00:41:28 to me, and we both parted in the situation. That's
00:41:28 --> 00:41:32 not what she wants to do, and that's fine. People
00:41:32 --> 00:41:36 see it as a religious connection, which I've
00:41:36 --> 00:41:38 had to explain it isn't. There's no religion
00:41:38 --> 00:41:41 behind Reiki at all. But yeah, my thing goes
00:41:41 --> 00:41:43 back to research, basically. There's more and
00:41:43 --> 00:41:47 more papers out there showing that Reiki attuned.
00:41:48 --> 00:41:51 Reiki practitioners versus, as they called them
00:41:51 --> 00:41:55 in the research scam, Reiki practitioners versus
00:41:55 --> 00:41:59 people with basically no background at all in
00:41:59 --> 00:42:00 any of that they've just brought in for this
00:42:00 --> 00:42:03 research. The attuned Reiki practitioners had
00:42:03 --> 00:42:07 more beneficial impact on the patients they were
00:42:07 --> 00:42:10 dealing with than the other two groups. So, yeah,
00:42:11 --> 00:42:12 I think it's just good. Keep up with what's out
00:42:12 --> 00:42:15 there research -wise. listen to other people's
00:42:15 --> 00:42:18 feedback because everyone's had a different experience
00:42:18 --> 00:42:22 and let people choose for themselves, really.
00:42:22 --> 00:42:25 How do mindfulness, presence and spirituality
00:42:25 --> 00:42:28 show up in the way you prepare for clients and
00:42:28 --> 00:42:32 hold space for them during a session? Yeah, usually
00:42:32 --> 00:42:35 before a client comes in, I clean my house because
00:42:35 --> 00:42:38 it's not a clinic in my house. And I actually
00:42:38 --> 00:42:40 find that quite peaceful, actually just doing
00:42:40 --> 00:42:42 the tidying up and things. And then often about
00:42:42 --> 00:42:45 15 minutes before I have a client come in, I'll
00:42:45 --> 00:42:49 actually just sit. I play some. Music that I
00:42:49 --> 00:42:51 like, obviously more, you know, relaxing music
00:42:51 --> 00:42:54 and things like that. And I just sit in the time
00:42:54 --> 00:42:58 and I just kind of ask that I can be there for
00:42:58 --> 00:43:00 my client and I can offer them what they need
00:43:00 --> 00:43:03 because each client needs different things. And
00:43:03 --> 00:43:05 sometimes the client wants someone who's, they
00:43:05 --> 00:43:07 can bounce things off more where another client
00:43:07 --> 00:43:11 just wants to talk. So just, yeah, I think just
00:43:11 --> 00:43:14 being able to build that rapport as well is so
00:43:14 --> 00:43:16 important because no one's going to share anything
00:43:16 --> 00:43:20 if you actually. They don't trust you and they
00:43:20 --> 00:43:22 think that you're sitting in judgment of them
00:43:22 --> 00:43:24 and you just can't do that. It's like everyone's
00:43:24 --> 00:43:28 got a journey and we've all had our own moments
00:43:28 --> 00:43:29 where we may or may not have done things we're
00:43:29 --> 00:43:33 proud of, but you have to allow that space for
00:43:33 --> 00:43:36 them. And so with mindfulness, it's just for
00:43:36 --> 00:43:39 me sitting and giving myself that space to then
00:43:39 --> 00:43:43 let that client in. And I do use protection around
00:43:43 --> 00:43:45 my house and my business and things as well.
00:43:46 --> 00:43:48 which I think is important when you're particularly
00:43:48 --> 00:43:51 dealing with energy. Yeah, you have to clear
00:43:51 --> 00:43:53 the energy, right, in between clients and for
00:43:53 --> 00:43:57 yourself. Yeah, absolutely, yeah. Are there any
00:43:57 --> 00:44:00 client stories or transformations that stand
00:44:00 --> 00:44:03 out in your mind as especially meaningful or
00:44:03 --> 00:44:10 memorable? I had one client come in who was suffering
00:44:10 --> 00:44:15 from very bad anxiety, had to stop work. Couldn't
00:44:15 --> 00:44:18 really socialise when they did. They were just
00:44:18 --> 00:44:22 wanting to be at home, had stopped cooking, things
00:44:22 --> 00:44:25 like that. They came to me. I had one session
00:44:25 --> 00:44:29 with them and gave them some remedies. This was
00:44:29 --> 00:44:33 homeopathy. They, next time for the follow -up,
00:44:33 --> 00:44:35 bounced back into my clinic and I was going,
00:44:35 --> 00:44:39 oh, I wonder how many anti -anxiety tablets they've
00:44:39 --> 00:44:42 had. And they'd totally come off them with support
00:44:42 --> 00:44:45 from the doctor. They were back working. They
00:44:45 --> 00:44:47 were back. We had cooked dinner for 16 people
00:44:47 --> 00:44:51 a couple of nights before. All the work they'd
00:44:51 --> 00:44:54 been doing previously, they were self -employed,
00:44:54 --> 00:44:56 so it was actually a really big thing that they
00:44:56 --> 00:45:01 needed this shift. And that was within, it was
00:45:01 --> 00:45:03 three weeks after I'd initially started working
00:45:03 --> 00:45:05 with them that they bounced back into my office
00:45:05 --> 00:45:08 like that. So even though I know what I do works,
00:45:09 --> 00:45:11 I was still like going, okay, well, that was
00:45:11 --> 00:45:14 pretty impressive. That's great, three weeks.
00:45:15 --> 00:45:21 Yeah, and not needing to be on tablets forever.
00:45:21 --> 00:45:24 They literally took what they needed to do homeopathically
00:45:24 --> 00:45:30 and haven't been them since. Yeah, that's great.
00:45:30 --> 00:45:32 You're also involved in professional communities
00:45:32 --> 00:45:36 and leadership roles. What role do community
00:45:36 --> 00:45:39 continuing education and collaboration with other
00:45:39 --> 00:45:43 practitioners play in your work? Oh gosh, it's
00:45:43 --> 00:45:46 really important. So I'm part of a group, an
00:45:46 --> 00:45:51 online homeopathic group. I have a couple of
00:45:51 --> 00:45:54 mentors that I work with as well. And that helps
00:45:54 --> 00:45:57 when you have a case that, you know, it might
00:45:57 --> 00:45:59 be the first time you're dealing with a symptom
00:45:59 --> 00:46:02 or things like that. Or it could be that actually
00:46:02 --> 00:46:04 there's a remedy out there you haven't heard
00:46:04 --> 00:46:07 of before. And so part of... When my clients
00:46:07 --> 00:46:10 come on board, I get them to sign a new client
00:46:10 --> 00:46:12 consent form and in there it actually states
00:46:12 --> 00:46:14 that they give me permission to ask other people
00:46:14 --> 00:46:17 about the case if need be. I've had to do that
00:46:17 --> 00:46:21 recently and had a really good remedy come my
00:46:21 --> 00:46:23 way, which I wouldn't have found out about because
00:46:23 --> 00:46:29 sometimes you get your main big remedies that...
00:46:29 --> 00:46:32 kind of everyone knows about, you know, Arnica
00:46:32 --> 00:46:34 and Natmir and things. And then you've got these
00:46:34 --> 00:46:37 tiny little remedies that might only work for
00:46:37 --> 00:46:41 like a very small group of people. But if you
00:46:41 --> 00:46:43 can't find out about them, you might be getting
00:46:43 --> 00:46:46 your client into service because you're not going
00:46:46 --> 00:46:48 to actually be able to help them shift what needs
00:46:48 --> 00:46:53 to be shifted. So I use my contacts in the homeopathic
00:46:53 --> 00:46:55 world with that. And Reiki is the same thing.
00:46:55 --> 00:46:58 You know, it's... You just have to bounce off
00:46:58 --> 00:47:01 each other and give each other support because
00:47:01 --> 00:47:03 it's a bit of a crazy world out there sometimes.
00:47:03 --> 00:47:07 Yeah, for sure. As someone who supports other
00:47:07 --> 00:47:09 in healing, do you also seek out healing support
00:47:09 --> 00:47:12 for yourself when needed? And has that experience
00:47:12 --> 00:47:15 of being on the receiving end changed the way
00:47:15 --> 00:47:19 you work with clients? I do. Generally go for
00:47:19 --> 00:47:21 a massage. I used to, when I was studying my
00:47:21 --> 00:47:25 big things, I'm a water, hot water baby. So I'm
00:47:25 --> 00:47:28 like hot pools. So if my partner and I go on
00:47:28 --> 00:47:30 holidays, we literally go hot pool hopping around
00:47:30 --> 00:47:34 New Zealand. So that for me, that's kind of my
00:47:34 --> 00:47:37 thing, but I do go for, and we'll often go for
00:47:37 --> 00:47:40 a massage or at the moment I'm going to get some.
00:47:41 --> 00:47:44 cranial sacral work done uh just something about
00:47:44 --> 00:47:47 try i like to try different modalities as well
00:47:47 --> 00:47:50 because i think it's important if i need to recommend
00:47:50 --> 00:47:52 something to my clients that i've actually tried
00:47:52 --> 00:47:54 it rather than going oh i've heard this works
00:47:54 --> 00:47:57 or whatever it's like so kind of lucky in that
00:47:57 --> 00:48:00 way i think often try different things yeah so
00:48:00 --> 00:48:02 i suppose that's kind of what i do and i yeah
00:48:02 --> 00:48:04 so part of it is you have been able to recommend
00:48:04 --> 00:48:06 something to a client if there's a couple of
00:48:06 --> 00:48:08 different things we need to do to help them move
00:48:08 --> 00:48:11 along yeah well you got to give back to yourself
00:48:11 --> 00:48:13 right or you don't have energy to help others
00:48:13 --> 00:48:17 absolutely yeah uh you often speak about the
00:48:17 --> 00:48:20 importance of self -care and personal responsibility
00:48:20 --> 00:48:23 and well -being why are those themes so central
00:48:23 --> 00:48:29 to your philosophy um Part of it is it's really
00:48:29 --> 00:48:31 easy for other people to say, oh, you need to
00:48:31 --> 00:48:33 change or you need to do this. And it's like
00:48:33 --> 00:48:37 often people are reflecting rather than, because
00:48:37 --> 00:48:40 it's hard. It's hard to go, actually, I'm hurting,
00:48:40 --> 00:48:43 I'm broken. Broken's not probably the right word.
00:48:43 --> 00:48:47 But often people reflect out on other people
00:48:47 --> 00:48:49 rather than doing their own healing journey.
00:48:50 --> 00:48:53 And because they're scared or afraid, and that
00:48:53 --> 00:48:55 can be because they're worried of stuff that
00:48:55 --> 00:48:58 will come up. So I think. We should always look
00:48:58 --> 00:49:01 at ourselves for change before we ask others
00:49:01 --> 00:49:05 to make that change. And often clients will find
00:49:05 --> 00:49:08 that if they've come and done that work, they'll
00:49:08 --> 00:49:11 go, oh, gosh, it's really interesting. My husband's
00:49:11 --> 00:49:13 made these significant changes. And it's like,
00:49:13 --> 00:49:16 you've changed. And because you've changed the
00:49:16 --> 00:49:19 dynamic of their relationship, the other person's
00:49:19 --> 00:49:22 had to change because they're not getting that
00:49:22 --> 00:49:27 bounce back anymore or shift. Yeah, self -responsibility
00:49:27 --> 00:49:29 and then rather than pushing it out onto other
00:49:29 --> 00:49:32 people, I think it's the main thing around that.
00:49:32 --> 00:49:35 And I've had to do that myself on my journey
00:49:35 --> 00:49:39 and my relationship. It comes from personal experience.
00:49:40 --> 00:49:43 What is your vision for the future of replenish
00:49:43 --> 00:49:45 healing and the kind of impact you hope to continue
00:49:45 --> 00:49:49 making in people's lives? Just, I don't know,
00:49:49 --> 00:49:52 it's... don't want to get bigger yeah maybe but
00:49:52 --> 00:49:55 i i actually quite like being small and just
00:49:55 --> 00:50:00 knowing that people can come through and have
00:50:00 --> 00:50:03 that shift and you know my partner said to me
00:50:03 --> 00:50:06 one time you need to stop have our fixing people
00:50:06 --> 00:50:12 so quickly and it's like because Well, I think
00:50:12 --> 00:50:15 it was very tongue -in -cheek in regards to the
00:50:15 --> 00:50:18 fact that, like, if you go to doctors, often
00:50:18 --> 00:50:21 you'll have to go back for, you know, quite a
00:50:21 --> 00:50:23 few years. For years and years sometimes. Yeah,
00:50:23 --> 00:50:26 yeah. So, you know, when you see somebody and
00:50:26 --> 00:50:28 you see them two or three times and you don't
00:50:28 --> 00:50:32 see them for years, it's fantastic. I love it.
00:50:33 --> 00:50:36 Yeah, but not great for the books, in a way.
00:50:37 --> 00:50:39 But, you know, it doesn't matter because that's
00:50:39 --> 00:50:42 not what it's about. For me, it's about knowing
00:50:42 --> 00:50:44 that I've actually made a difference in someone
00:50:44 --> 00:50:48 else's life, really. I've had a client drive
00:50:48 --> 00:50:51 up from the other side of Auckland, which is
00:50:51 --> 00:50:53 about an hour, because she decided I was the
00:50:53 --> 00:50:56 Reiki person she wanted to see. And she got off
00:50:56 --> 00:50:58 the table, had a good cry, haven't seen her since.
00:50:59 --> 00:51:02 And she goes, I feel better, and she left. And
00:51:02 --> 00:51:05 that's, for me, that's what it's all about, actually.
00:51:05 --> 00:51:09 Well, that's great. You're based in? Auckland,
00:51:09 --> 00:51:11 New Zealand. Do you offer online sessions for
00:51:11 --> 00:51:14 international clients as well? And how do you
00:51:14 --> 00:51:18 manage the time difference? I do. And like with
00:51:18 --> 00:51:23 you, we make it work. It's that, yeah, checking
00:51:23 --> 00:51:26 my international clock thing. And I think that's
00:51:26 --> 00:51:30 really good with Google Calendar or Zoom or whatever,
00:51:30 --> 00:51:34 because what it does is actually aligns both
00:51:34 --> 00:51:36 so you can actually look and go, okay. here on
00:51:36 --> 00:51:40 the east coast of america or in france or whatever
00:51:40 --> 00:51:43 versus what it is in new zealand so i like the
00:51:43 --> 00:51:45 fact that i don't have to think too hard about
00:51:45 --> 00:51:49 it yeah yeah the internet's wonderful for that
00:51:49 --> 00:51:54 yeah you're an executive contributor with brains
00:51:54 --> 00:51:57 magazine as well besides your work there where
00:51:57 --> 00:51:59 else can people learn from you follow your journey
00:51:59 --> 00:52:04 or connect with you um so i have a website which
00:52:04 --> 00:52:08 is replenishhealing .com, and it has a little
00:52:08 --> 00:52:10 bit on there. And I also have my media links
00:52:10 --> 00:52:13 up in there as well, so any media or interviews
00:52:13 --> 00:52:16 I've done are sitting on my website, along with
00:52:16 --> 00:52:20 podcasts and things like that. I'm on Facebook
00:52:20 --> 00:52:23 under Replenish Healing, and I'm on Instagram
00:52:23 --> 00:52:30 as well, as I have mentioned. And LinkedIn. And
00:52:30 --> 00:52:33 as mentioned earlier, marketing is not my strength,
00:52:33 --> 00:52:38 but I do occasionally post. So I have a little
00:52:38 --> 00:52:40 run of a, yeah, let's get out there and post
00:52:40 --> 00:52:43 something. And that might not happen again for
00:52:43 --> 00:52:48 a few months, but my main goal is actually just
00:52:48 --> 00:52:51 making sure I have time for my clients and things
00:52:51 --> 00:52:57 like that. okay finally for someone who is curious
00:52:57 --> 00:53:00 about holistic healing but unsure where to begin
00:53:00 --> 00:53:02 what would you say to encourage them to take
00:53:02 --> 00:53:06 that first step weirdly enough i think go out
00:53:06 --> 00:53:11 and try different modalities because if i hadn't
00:53:11 --> 00:53:13 tried homeopathy i wouldn't have known about
00:53:13 --> 00:53:16 it and i wouldn't have known how it worked um
00:53:16 --> 00:53:19 and things like that so yeah i think just go
00:53:19 --> 00:53:21 and give things a try and Some things aren't
00:53:21 --> 00:53:24 going to sit with you. Like you'll go to book
00:53:24 --> 00:53:28 something and in your gut it's just saying, no,
00:53:28 --> 00:53:30 that's not me and that's actually okay as well.
00:53:30 --> 00:53:33 So people will find where they need to be if
00:53:33 --> 00:53:36 they just sit and, as you were saying earlier
00:53:36 --> 00:53:39 about being mindful and sitting in the moment
00:53:39 --> 00:53:42 and see what comes to you. But you give things
00:53:42 --> 00:53:44 a go. You don't have to do it again. It's a bit
00:53:44 --> 00:53:46 like trying food. You can try it once and if
00:53:46 --> 00:53:47 you don't like it, you don't need to go back.
00:53:49 --> 00:53:53 what was once pushed to the margins is no longer
00:53:53 --> 00:53:56 disappearing it is evolving and conversations
00:53:56 --> 00:53:59 like this remind us that the future of medicine
00:53:59 --> 00:54:04 may not be about choosing sides, but about understanding
00:54:04 --> 00:54:06 the full picture. Amanda, thank you so much for
00:54:06 --> 00:54:09 joining me today and for sharing your journey,
00:54:09 --> 00:54:11 your philosophy, and the work you're doing through
00:54:11 --> 00:54:14 Replenish Healing. I appreciate your thoughtful,
00:54:14 --> 00:54:17 intuitive approach, your willingness to honor
00:54:17 --> 00:54:20 both tradition and individualized care, and your
00:54:20 --> 00:54:23 commitment to helping people in a calm, compassionate,
00:54:23 --> 00:54:26 and professional way. And to our listeners, as
00:54:26 --> 00:54:28 always, whether you come from a highly conventional
00:54:28 --> 00:54:32 perspective, a deeply holistic one, or somewhere
00:54:32 --> 00:54:35 in between, these conversations invite us to
00:54:35 --> 00:54:39 stay curious, stay discerning, and remain open
00:54:39 --> 00:54:42 to learning. I'll place her contact info below.
