Is your sunscreen giving you a false sense of security?
Most of us have been taught that sun protection starts and ends with a bottle of SPF. However, as a clinical biochemist and holistic aesthetician, I know that the "Sunscreen Only" narrative is missing a massive piece of the biological puzzle.
In this episode of Where Science Meets Self-Care, Dr. Gordon O Telford (Dermatologist) and I explore why skin cancer rates continue to rise despite widespread sunscreen use. We dive into the deeper biological story: how oxidative stress, immunosuppression, and nutritional deficiencies (specifically Vitamin A and B3) leave the skin vulnerable, regardless of how much cream you apply.
For Educational Purposes Only: This interview reflects the clinical observations and professional opinions of Dr. Gordon O. Telford.
The scientific concepts discussed—including photobiology and physiology-based approaches—are intended for academic discussion and do not constitute medical advice.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:02 Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Gordon
00:00:02 --> 00:00:08 O. Telford, MD, FRCPC, Dermatology and Internal
00:00:08 --> 00:00:12 Medicine, FAAD, a Canadian physician with dual
00:00:12 --> 00:00:15 specialist training in dermatology and internal
00:00:15 --> 00:00:19 medicine. Dr. Telford has investigated a vitamin
00:00:19 --> 00:00:22 -based approach to sun protection grounded in
00:00:22 --> 00:00:25 cutaneous physiology. In this conversation, we
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 will examine that work and explore where our
00:00:28 --> 00:00:31 perspectives align. and where they thoughtfully
00:00:31 --> 00:00:34 differ. On strategies for skin cancer prevention.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 If you are someone at increased risk for skin
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 cancer, we invite you to stay with us as we explore
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 evidence -based strategies that may help inform
00:00:44 --> 00:00:48 prevention based on this article. Non -melanoma
00:00:48 --> 00:00:52 skin cancer is a potentially preventable disease.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:56 Now we'll discuss his background and clinical
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 experience. Dr. Telford practiced medicine for
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 over four decades with a clinical focus on non
00:01:02 --> 00:01:06 -melanoma skin cancer, photoaging, and preventative
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 dermatology, and is now retired from private
00:01:09 --> 00:01:12 practice in Nova Scotia, Canada. He completed
00:01:12 --> 00:01:15 specialist training in internal medicine and
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 dermatology, earning fellowship in the Royal
00:01:18 --> 00:01:23 College of Physicians of Canada, FRCPC. in internal
00:01:23 --> 00:01:28 medicine in 1977 and in dermatology in 1979.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 He has also been a fellow of the American Academy
00:01:31 --> 00:01:37 of Dermatology FAAD since 1981. Throughout his
00:01:37 --> 00:01:40 career, Dr. Telford demonstrated a strong commitment
00:01:40 --> 00:01:44 to clinical research, medical education, and
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 patient -centered prevention, alongside leadership
00:01:47 --> 00:01:50 in non -profit and professional organizations.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 His work integrates insights from photobiology,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 cutaneous immunology, and nutritional biochemistry,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:02 emphasizing long -term skin health rather than
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 short -term cosmetic outcomes. Beginning in the
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 late 1970s, Dr. Telford followed high -risk patients
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 longitudinally and explored the role of topical
00:02:12 --> 00:02:17 vitamins and antioxidants as adjuncts to conventional
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 sun protection. His open labeled prospective
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 clinical experience informed a prevention model
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 centered on immune preservation, reduction of
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 oxidative stress, and protection beyond ultraviolet
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 radiation alone. In addition to his clinical
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 work, Dr. Telford served for 30 years as a medical
00:02:36 --> 00:02:41 expert and commentator on CFAX Radio, where he
00:02:41 --> 00:02:45 translated complex medical topics for the public
00:02:45 --> 00:02:47 and contributed to community health education.
