Bunions Posture Footcare Preventing Fungus Corns Calluses and Warts

Are your feet giving you warning signs? From thick, discoloured nails to painful bunions and stubborn calluses, many common foot issues stem from simple misunderstandings about daily hygiene, footwear, and biomechanics.

In this episode, we dive into evidence-based foot care, answer popular search questions, and clear up common myths. We cover:

Fungal Infections & Biofilms: Recognize early warning signs of toenail fungus, understand how fungal spores form protective biofilms, and learn why natural enzyme supplements and DIY remedies often fail.

Warts, Athlete's Foot & Chemical Dangers: How to distinguish plantar warts (HPV) from athlete's foot, and the critical dangers of using household bleach or harsh chemicals on your skin.

Corns, Calluses & Ingrown Nails: Why cutting calluses makes them grow back thicker, how to smooth pressure points safely, and why recurring ingrown toenails are often a soft-tissue issue solved by procedures like the Vandenbos technique.

Bunions, Posture & Footwear: How your shoes affect joint stress across your whole body, simple foot exercises, and non-surgical options for bunion relief (including wide toe box shoes).

Daily Hygiene & Tool Sterilization: Step-by-step methods to sanitize nail clippers at home (IPAC guidelines), sun-drying shoes, and controlling shoe moisture.

00:00:23 --> 00:00:32 your host, Ida Fanelli. The information provided
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 in this document is for educational and informational
00:00:35 --> 00:00:39 purposes only and is not intended as medical
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 advice, diagnosis or treatment. Always seek advice

00:00:46 --> 00:00:50 or chiropodist with any questions you may have
00:00:50 --> 00:00:53 about a medical condition or foot care treatment.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 Hello everyone and welcome. Today, we're focusing
00:00:58 --> 00:01:01 on something that people often step on: feet.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:07 They rarely get the attention they deserve. We'll
00:01:07 --> 00:01:10 cover planters, warts, athlete's foot, fungal
00:01:10 --> 00:01:14 nails, corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, and
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 bunions. For each, I'll explain what it is, what
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 raises your risk, daily habits that help, and
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 when to see a professional. We'll also look at
00:01:25 --> 00:01:28 how your overall health, posture, and weight distribution
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 can affect your feet sometimes in surprising
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 ways, whether you like conventional care, holistic
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 methods or a mix. My goal is to give you practical
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 information so you can make well -informed choices
00:01:42 --> 00:01:47 your shoes, activity, and overall health all affect
00:01:47 --> 00:01:51 how your feet feel, but remember a foot symptom
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 alone doesn't reveal what's happening inside
00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 your body. Let's start with fungal spores. Spores
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 are tiny reproductive cells. When they land somewhere
00:02:02 --> 00:02:07 that suits them, they germinate and grow thread
00:02:07 --> 00:02:11 -like filaments called hyphae. Fungal spores
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 that affect our skin and nails are found almost
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 anywhere. And they're tough. They can wait a
00:02:18 --> 00:02:22 very long time until conditions are just right.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 What do they need? warmth, moisture, darkness,
00:02:28 --> 00:02:33 and food. What they require from us in the form
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 of food is keratin, the protein in our nails
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 and skin. Since feet are usually enclosed in
00:02:40 --> 00:02:44 socks, clothes, and shoes, they stay warm, damp,
00:02:44 --> 00:02:49 and dark. It's like a spa for fungus. The good
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 news is that if you just remove one of these
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 conditions, Fungus has a much harder time growing.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 Keep this in mind. We'll come back to it later.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 Spotting a toenail fungal infection early. A
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 nail infection is easy to miss at first. It can
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 look like a minor mark or an old bump you've
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 forgotten about. Possible signs include white,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 yellow, or brown discoloration, thickening, brittleness,
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 or the nail starting to lift away from the nail
00:03:21 --> 00:03:25 bed. Here's the catch. Other things can cause
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 those same changes, so you can't confirm a fungal
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 infection just by looking, and please don't file
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 or scrape a suspicious nail aggressively to find
00:03:36 --> 00:03:41 out if it goes on the nail, it can lift and detach
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 leaving a gap where moisture and debris collect
00:03:45 --> 00:03:50 it can turn thick, brittle, and yellow, green-brown
00:03:50 --> 00:03:54 or gray, often with a crumbly texture and some odour
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 or discomfort. Why catching it early matters?
00:03:59 --> 00:04:03 If you work in a spa or aesthetic setting, listen
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 up. In Ontario, local public health rules say
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 that if a fungal infection is present or suspected,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:14 you don't perform nail services or treat the
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 nail. You refer the client to a licensed foot
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 care provider such as a doctor, chiropodist, or
00:04:21 --> 00:04:26 podiatrist. for assessment and lab testing. Rules
00:04:26 --> 00:04:30 vary by province and by local public health unit.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:35 So check what applies where you work. Early assessment
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 matters because it helps us identify the real
00:04:38 --> 00:04:41 cause and leads to proper care before the infection
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 settles under the nail where it's harder to treat.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 Doctors, chiropodists, and podiatrists can confirm
00:04:48 --> 00:04:52 a suspected infection by sending a nail sample
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 to the lab, a traditional fungal culture, or
00:04:55 --> 00:05:00 a rapid polymerase chain reaction PCR test. PCR
00:05:00 --> 00:05:04 testing gives faster results, but both methods
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 verify whether active fungi are present before
00:05:07 --> 00:05:12 starting treatment. Estheticians can spot early
00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 signs and recommend an assessment, but trimming
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 de -bribing or treating an infected nail is usually
00:05:19 --> 00:05:23 outside our scope. Pedicures should only be done
00:05:23 --> 00:05:28 on healthy intact skin. A quick side note: fingernail
00:05:28 --> 00:05:32 fungus is much less common than toenail fungus.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 Fingernails grow faster, though scientists aren't
00:05:36 --> 00:05:40 sure why that matters. Toenails also spend more
00:05:40 --> 00:05:44 time in warm, enclosed, damp footwear. frequent
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 use of artificial nails or polish can also trap
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 moisture and increase the risk of fungal growth
00:05:51 --> 00:05:57 a closer look at biofilm and enzymes I looked
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 into this following part out of curiosity, and
00:06:00 --> 00:06:05 I found it interesting: what is a fungal biofilm
00:06:05 --> 00:06:09 when fungi cause an infection like toenail fungus
00:06:09 --> 00:06:12 or athlete's foot, they don't just stay on the
00:06:12 --> 00:06:16 surface. They group together and build a slimy
00:06:16 --> 00:06:19 protective shield made of sugars, proteins, and
00:06:19 --> 00:06:25 DNA. Scientists call this sticky shield a biofilm.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:30 Think of a biofilm as a small fortress that hides
00:06:30 --> 00:06:34 the fungus and keeps antifungal medicines or
00:06:34 --> 00:06:38 your body's immune system from reaching it. In
00:06:38 --> 00:06:41 labs, researchers have tested enzyme-specific
00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 proteins to see whether they can break down that
00:06:44 --> 00:06:47 fortress. Think of them as the demolition crew.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:51 When we look at sugar -busting enzymes like beta
00:06:51 --> 00:06:56 -1 ,3 -glucanase, we see that fungi use specific
00:06:56 --> 00:07:00 sugars to build their biofilm fortresses. In
00:07:00 --> 00:07:04 lab settings, adding these enzymes achieved about
00:07:04 --> 00:07:09 56 % dispersal of established Candida albicans
00:07:09 --> 00:07:13 biofilms, allowing antifungal medicines like
00:07:13 --> 00:07:19 Fucosanol to penetrate and kill the fungi much
00:07:19 --> 00:07:23 more effectively. Then there are DNA-chopping
00:07:23 --> 00:07:27 enzymes called DNAases. in experiments on a mould
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 called Aspergillus, they weakened the fortress
00:07:30 --> 00:07:34 and made standard antifungal drugs up to eight
00:07:34 --> 00:07:38 times more effective, and for our topic, there's
00:07:38 --> 00:07:43 Trichophyton rubrum, the main fungus behind toenail
00:07:43 --> 00:07:47 infections and athlete's foot; it builds biofilms.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:51 In the last studies, a combination of three enzymes
00:07:51 --> 00:07:55 suppressed up to 61 % of its biofilm growth.
00:07:56 --> 00:08:00 There's also a different approach: protease inhibitors.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:03 They don't dissolve a biofilm matrix directly.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:07 Instead, they block the activity of protein-cutting enzymes.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:11 Lab studies show that combining certain inhibitors
00:08:11 --> 00:08:14 with antifungal drugs can both prevent initial
00:08:14 --> 00:08:18 Candida biofilms from forming and help disrupt
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 mature established ones. Here's an important
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 reality check. Comparing lab dishes to human
00:08:24 --> 00:08:29 feet is a big leap. Taking an oral enzyme supplement
00:08:29 --> 00:08:32 is very different from applying concentrated
00:08:32 --> 00:08:37 enzymes directly into lab fungal culture. A bromelain
00:08:37 --> 00:08:42 pill from pineapple stem or a papain pill from
00:08:42 --> 00:08:47 papaya gets digested in your stomach. Some holistic
00:08:47 --> 00:08:51 health approaches suggest taking oral enzymes
00:08:51 --> 00:08:54 on an empty stomach to reduce soft tissue inflammation
00:08:54 --> 00:08:58 but no human clinical studies show that ingested
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 enzymes survive digestion, reach your toenail
00:09:02 --> 00:09:06 beds or dissolve biofilms in real life, the only
00:09:06 --> 00:09:10 animal study I found tested a sugar-busting enzyme
00:09:10 --> 00:09:14 that helped clear biofilms in rats, but it used
00:09:14 --> 00:09:17 an infected plastic tube, not a toenail, and it
00:09:17 --> 00:09:21 wasn't in humans, so while the science is fascinating
00:09:21 --> 00:09:25 it's still early days and not a reason to start
00:09:25 --> 00:09:29 Taking enzyme pills for nail fungus what the
00:09:29 --> 00:09:33 label can and can't say. If you buy natural health
00:09:33 --> 00:09:37 products in Canada, read the label. Health Canada
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 allows licensed bromelain products to be labelled
00:09:39 --> 00:09:43 as helping digestion or relieving minor pain,
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 swelling, and inflammation. It does not allow
00:09:46 --> 00:09:49 enzyme supplements or herbal extracts to claim
00:09:49 --> 00:09:53 they cure or treat fungal nail infections. In
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 Canada, look for a natural product number, NPN,
00:09:57 --> 00:10:01 or Drug Identification Number in the United States
00:10:01 --> 00:10:05 look for FDA approval. If a bottle claims to
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 cure nail fungus or dissolve foot biofilms, consider
00:10:08 --> 00:10:13 that a red flag, oral enzymes like bromelain
00:10:13 --> 00:10:17 can thin your blood and affect clotting. Be sure
00:10:17 --> 00:10:20 to speak with a doctor or pharmacist first if
00:10:20 --> 00:10:23 you take blood thinners, anti -inflammatory medications,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:28 or antibiotics. Or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding
00:10:28 --> 00:10:32 or scheduled for surgery. Also taking enzyme
00:10:32 --> 00:10:35 supplements too close to certain antifungal medications
00:10:35 --> 00:10:40 may interfere with how those drugs work. Skip
00:10:40 --> 00:10:44 the kitchen cabinet cures. Harsh home remedies
00:10:44 --> 00:10:47 and undiluted nail mixtures can break down your
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 skin barrier, cause burns and make infections
00:10:50 --> 00:10:54 easier to spread. And get a professional assessment.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:58 Thick or yellow nails, aren't always fungus they
00:10:58 --> 00:11:02 can come from an injury or poor circulation a
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 licensed doctor podiatrist or chiropodist can
00:11:05 --> 00:11:09 do a proper lab test like a nail clipping or
00:11:09 --> 00:11:13 culture before you start any treatment oils and
00:11:13 --> 00:11:17 one big warning about plastic wrap if the skin
00:11:17 --> 00:11:21 around the nail is dry start with nourishing
00:11:21 --> 00:11:25 carrier oils like jojoba olive sesame seeds squalling
00:11:25 --> 00:11:29 or liquid vitamin e In traditional holistic skincare,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 people add a few drops of essential oils like
00:11:33 --> 00:11:38 tea tree or eucalyptus or use ozonated oil, which
00:11:38 --> 00:11:42 keeps better in the fridge. But please see these
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 as cosmetic extras. They are not established
00:11:45 --> 00:11:49 treatments for fungal nail infections. And a
00:11:49 --> 00:11:52 suspected infection needs a professional, not
00:11:52 --> 00:11:56 a DIY approach. Always dilute essential oils
00:11:56 --> 00:12:00 in a carrier oil. Use any cosmetic oil sparingly
00:12:00 --> 00:12:04 on dry surrounding skin and stop if you get irritation.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:09 Here's an important point. You may have heard
00:12:09 --> 00:12:12 of occlusion, which means covering a cream with
00:12:12 --> 00:12:16 plastic wrap to help it absorb. Never put plastic
00:12:16 --> 00:12:19 wrap over essential oils, even if they're diluted.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:24 Trapped heat. and moisture can cause serious
00:12:24 --> 00:12:27 irritation or chemical burns. To protect your
00:12:27 --> 00:12:30 sheets or shoes, wear clean breathable cotton
00:12:30 --> 00:12:35 socks instead. Also avoid using vitamin E oil
00:12:35 --> 00:12:40 between the toes if that area is damp. Explore
00:12:40 --> 00:12:43 habits. Wash your hands with soap and water right
00:12:43 --> 00:12:46 after touching an infected nail or athlete's
00:12:46 --> 00:12:49 foot to avoid spreading it to your fingernails
00:12:49 --> 00:12:52 or other parts of your body. Easy daily foot
00:12:52 --> 00:12:56 movement. Gentle movements help with overall
00:12:56 --> 00:13:00 foot comfort. These are easy to do at home. Stop
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 If anything hurts, check with a medical expert
00:13:02 --> 00:13:06 First, if you have neuropathy or circulation problems.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:10 First, ankle pumps. Sit or lie down with your
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 legs out. Flex your ankles so your toes point
00:13:13 --> 00:13:16 to the ceiling. Hold for a second or two, then
00:13:16 --> 00:13:21 point them away. Do that 50 to 20 times. Your
00:13:21 --> 00:13:24 calf muscles act like a second heart, helping
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 move fluids out of your feet and lower legs.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:32 Second, toe splays and towel curls. Sit with
00:13:32 --> 00:13:35 your feet flat and place a small towel under
00:13:35 --> 00:13:38 your foot. Scrunch it toward you with your toes.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 Then spread your toes wide and hold for five
00:13:41 --> 00:13:45 seconds. It works the tiny muscles in your feet.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:49 Third, heel-toe raises. Sit tall or stand
00:13:49 --> 00:13:53 holding a wall. Lift your heels onto the balls
00:13:53 --> 00:13:56 of your feet, then lower them and lift your toes.
00:13:56 --> 00:14:00 They work the foot, lower leg and arch. And fourth,
00:14:00 --> 00:14:04 foot rolls. Roll a tennis ball, golf ball or
00:14:04 --> 00:14:07 small rolling pin under your foot from heel to
00:14:07 --> 00:14:11 toe for a minute or two per side. It feels great.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:15 Spending a few minutes each day on these exercises,
00:14:15 --> 00:14:18 especially after sitting for a long time, can
00:14:18 --> 00:14:21 help keep your feet comfortable and mobile. If
00:14:21 --> 00:14:24 you practice reflexology, be careful around an
00:14:24 --> 00:14:28 infected toenail or an active skin lesion. Fungal
00:14:28 --> 00:14:31 spores and viruses can transfer through touch.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:35 Avoid working directly over open or active infections
00:14:35 --> 00:14:39 and wash your hands well afterwards. To be clear,
00:14:39 --> 00:14:42 reflexology isn't a medical treatment or a cure
00:14:42 --> 00:14:45 for fungal infections. Many people find foot
00:14:45 --> 00:14:48 massage relaxing, but evidence that it affects
00:14:48 --> 00:14:51 circulation or lymphatic drainage is limited,
00:14:51 --> 00:14:54 so you shouldn't present it that way. And now
00:14:54 --> 00:14:57 we'll take time for a commercial break. Welcome
00:14:57 --> 00:15:02 back. Also avoid temperature extremes. some people
00:15:02 --> 00:15:05 suggest alternating hot and cold water to increase
00:15:05 --> 00:15:08 circulation, but there's not enough evidence that
00:15:08 --> 00:15:12 it treats nail fungus or helps nails grow if
00:15:12 --> 00:15:15 you have reduced sensation or poor circulation,
00:15:15 --> 00:15:19 extreme heat or cold could cause accidental injury
00:15:19 --> 00:15:23 stick with gentle movement and safe massage taming
00:15:24 --> 00:15:28 moisture in your shoes and home since fungi and
00:15:28 --> 00:15:31 mould need moisture; lowering humidity takes away
00:15:31 --> 00:15:34 what they need to grow: dehumidifiers and moisture
00:15:34 --> 00:15:38 absorbers like calcium chloride tubs or silica
00:15:38 --> 00:15:42 gel help reduce mould and fungal growth in your
00:15:42 --> 00:15:46 home. Here's a handy hint: don't toss those little
00:15:46 --> 00:15:49 desiccant packets from shoe boxes, handbags or
00:15:49 --> 00:15:53 medication bottles, drop them into your shoes
00:15:53 --> 00:15:56 after a long day, they soak up moisture
00:15:56 --> 00:15:59 not edible so keep them out of reach of kids
00:15:59 --> 00:16:03 and pets. When they're saturated, you can recharge
00:16:03 --> 00:16:06 mini silica packets by drying them in the sun
00:16:06 --> 00:16:10 or gently warming them on low heat in the oven.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:14 Don't microwave them since foil, paper indicators,
00:16:14 --> 00:16:19 or plastic parts may spark or melt. If you've
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 ever left wet gym shoes out in the sun, you've
00:16:22 --> 00:16:24 used one of the oldest hygiene hacks around.
00:16:25 --> 00:16:28 But does sunlight actually disinfect them? There
00:16:28 --> 00:16:32 is real science here. Sunlight contains UVA radiation,
00:16:33 --> 00:16:36 which creates reactive oxygen molecules inside
00:16:36 --> 00:16:39 microbes and damages their proteins and genetic
00:16:39 --> 00:16:43 materials. And a bit of gentle heat. And microbes
00:16:43 --> 00:16:47 get even more stress. Studies on solar water
00:16:47 --> 00:16:50 disinfection show that strong unfiltered sunlight
00:16:50 --> 00:16:54 can cut common bacteria by more than 99 percent
00:16:54 --> 00:16:59 within a few hours, but shoes are not water bottles
00:16:59 --> 00:17:03 Sun intensity changes with your location, cloud
00:17:03 --> 00:17:06 cover the seasons the time of day and humidity
00:17:06 --> 00:17:12 fungal spores hide inside the dark toe box under
00:17:12 --> 00:17:15 the insoles and along the seams where sunlight
00:17:15 --> 00:17:19 rays can't reach and some fungal structures are
00:17:19 --> 00:17:23 much tougher than ordinary microbes. The main
00:17:23 --> 00:17:26 point is that sunlight helps dry your shoes and
00:17:26 --> 00:17:30 drying makes it harder for fungus to grow. It's
00:17:30 --> 00:17:33 a good habit but sunlight is not a proven way
00:17:33 --> 00:17:36 to sterilize shoes. The same goes for consumer
00:17:36 --> 00:17:41 UV shoe devices. They vary a lot in design and
00:17:41 --> 00:17:44 power. Health Canada regulates medical claims
00:17:44 --> 00:17:47 so unless a device is specifically authorized
00:17:47 --> 00:17:51 for footwear disinfection, think of it as a maintenance
00:17:51 --> 00:17:54 extra, not a way to treat or prevent infection.
00:17:56 --> 00:17:59 Everyday habits that really help. Rotate your
00:17:59 --> 00:18:03 shoes and give each pair at least 24 hours to
00:18:03 --> 00:18:07 dry out completely. Wear clean moisture-wicking
00:18:07 --> 00:18:10 or breathable cotton socks and nature lovers
00:18:10 --> 00:18:13 remember to remove them immediately if they get
00:18:13 --> 00:18:17 damp. Let your nails breathe when you can wear
00:18:17 --> 00:18:20 sandals. Cooler weather is a good time to take
00:18:20 --> 00:18:24 a break from nail polish and to protect your
00:18:24 --> 00:18:27 feet in public places, wear waterproof flip -flops
00:18:27 --> 00:18:31 or shower sandals in communal showers on pool
00:18:31 --> 00:18:35 decks and in locker rooms, viruses and surface
00:18:35 --> 00:18:40 antiseptics. Plantar warts are rough bumps on
00:18:40 --> 00:18:43 the sole, usually where you carry weight, like
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 the ball of the foot, the heel or the base of
00:18:45 --> 00:18:49 the toes. When they grow inward, a thick callus
00:18:49 --> 00:18:52 can form over them. They often have tiny black
00:18:52 --> 00:18:56 dots, sometimes called wart seeds. Those are
00:18:56 --> 00:18:59 actually clotted blood vessels. They can hurt
00:18:59 --> 00:19:02 when you walk or stand, and they may appear on
00:19:02 --> 00:19:05 their own or in clusters. On brown or black skin,
00:19:05 --> 00:19:08 they may look lighter than the surrounding skin.
00:19:09 --> 00:19:13 What causes them? More than 100 types of human
00:19:13 --> 00:19:19 papillomavirus or HPV, exist, but only a few non
00:19:19 --> 00:19:22 -genital types can cause plantar warts. They
00:19:22 --> 00:19:25 enter through tiny invisible breaks in the skin
00:19:25 --> 00:19:28 and love warm, moist public spaces like locker
00:19:28 --> 00:19:32 rooms, pools, spas, and training floors. Some
00:19:32 --> 00:19:35 plantar warts resolve on their own as your immune
00:19:35 --> 00:19:39 system fights the virus. Others last longer or
00:19:39 --> 00:19:42 cause pain. They can appear alone or in groups.
00:19:43 --> 00:19:46 Estheticians should not touch or try to remove
00:19:46 --> 00:19:49 suspected warts. They can suggest the client
00:19:49 --> 00:19:52 see a medical professional. Trained clinicians
00:19:52 --> 00:19:56 can confirm the lesion and offer evidence-based
00:19:56 --> 00:19:59 options such as over -the -counter salicylic
00:19:59 --> 00:20:02 acid products or in -office treatments like freezing
00:20:02 --> 00:20:06 or minor surgical removal. Always follow product
00:20:06 --> 00:20:09 directions and ask a pharmacist or clinician first
00:20:09 --> 00:20:13 if you have reduced sensation, poor circulation,
00:20:13 --> 00:20:16 broken skin, or if you're unsure, it's a wart.
00:20:17 --> 00:20:20 Traditional holistic home remedies like tea tree
00:20:20 --> 00:20:25 oil, oregano oil, garlic, banana peel, castor
00:20:25 --> 00:20:28 oil, baking soda, or vinegar aren't clinically
00:20:28 --> 00:20:32 proven for plantar warts. And concentrated
00:20:32 --> 00:20:37 botanicals can irritate or burn skin, especially
00:20:37 --> 00:20:41 under a bandage. Seek professional advice if
00:20:41 --> 00:20:45 a lesion is painful. bleeding, changing or spreading,
00:20:45 --> 00:20:49 if you're unsure or if you have poor peripheral
00:20:49 --> 00:20:54 circulation or a weakened immune system. Estheticians
00:20:54 --> 00:20:57 can recognize the typical appearance of a planner's
00:20:57 --> 00:21:00 ward and recommend an assessment, but only a
00:21:00 --> 00:21:04 medical practitioner can diagnose it. Looking
00:21:04 --> 00:21:07 beyond traditional remedies. Scientists and pharmaceutical
00:21:07 --> 00:21:11 companies actively research enzymes, special
00:21:11 --> 00:21:14 proteins that drive chemical reactions, and their
00:21:14 --> 00:21:18 role in fighting viruses. In laboratory settings,
00:21:18 --> 00:21:21 researchers explore how targeted enzymes might
00:21:21 --> 00:21:25 interact with viral structures or human cell
00:21:25 --> 00:21:29 pathways to support antiviral strategies. While
00:21:29 --> 00:21:33 this science is fascinating, it is still in the
00:21:33 --> 00:21:37 early experimental stages. In Canada, Health
00:21:37 --> 00:21:41 Canada does not approve or authorize any enzyme
00:21:41 --> 00:21:44 supplement, natural health product, or home remedies
00:21:44 --> 00:21:47 to treat, weaken, or prevent plantar warts or
00:21:47 --> 00:21:51 HPV infections. Under Canadian regulations, licensed
00:21:51 --> 00:21:55 natural enzyme products like bromelain or papain
00:21:55 --> 00:21:59 are only authorized for specific uses such as
00:21:59 --> 00:22:01 aiding digestion or easing minor soft tissue
00:22:01 --> 00:22:05 swelling, not for fighting viral foot infections.
00:22:05 --> 00:22:09 Any medical treatment involving antiviral or
00:22:09 --> 00:22:11 specialized foot procedures must be evaluated
00:22:12 --> 00:22:15 and managed directly by a doctor, podiatrist,
00:22:15 --> 00:22:18 or chiropodist. On the product side, Health Canada
00:22:18 --> 00:22:21 permits licensed salicylic acid products to be
00:22:21 --> 00:22:24 labelled for removing and treating common and
00:22:24 --> 00:22:27 plantar warts. Other natural health products
00:22:27 --> 00:22:31 can't be marketed as wart cures unless Health
00:22:31 --> 00:22:35 Canada has authorized that claim. My own wart
00:22:35 --> 00:22:41 story. Here's a little irony. I caught my very
00:22:41 --> 00:22:44 first planner's warts while taking a professional
00:22:44 --> 00:22:47 foot care course, right when I was learning to
00:22:47 --> 00:22:51 keep feet healthy. We practiced barefoot with
00:22:51 --> 00:22:54 classmates, and that gave the virus its chance
00:22:54 --> 00:22:58 to slip through tiny breaks in my skin. I put
00:22:58 --> 00:23:00 tea tree oil on the smaller wart, and it went
00:23:00 --> 00:23:04 away fairly quickly. But I can't say the oil
00:23:04 --> 00:23:07 did it because some warts resolve on their own.
00:23:08 --> 00:23:11 The larger, deeper wart was far more stubborn.
00:23:12 --> 00:23:16 It eventually took a 20 % salicylic acid pack,
00:23:16 --> 00:23:19 plus a lot of time, patience, and consistency.
00:23:20 --> 00:23:23 I learned there's no magic cure. Warts are easy
00:23:23 --> 00:23:26 to catch in communal areas when you're barefoot,
00:23:26 --> 00:23:29 so prevention is important. Protect your feet
00:23:29 --> 00:23:32 and see a professional if warts don't go away.
00:23:33 --> 00:23:36 Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that usually
00:23:36 --> 00:23:39 starts between the toes. It prospers in sweaty
00:23:39 --> 00:23:44 socks, tight shoes, and wet gym floors. A group
00:23:44 --> 00:23:48 of fungi called dermatophytes causes it to feed
00:23:48 --> 00:23:52 on the skin keratin. And like HPV, they get in
00:23:52 --> 00:23:55 through smaller cracks in the skin barrier. What
00:23:55 --> 00:23:58 does it feel like? Itching, burning, or stinging
00:23:58 --> 00:24:01 between the toes. Dry, scaly, or peeling skin.
00:24:02 --> 00:24:05 Redness, irritation, or cracks. odour especially
00:24:05 --> 00:24:09 with sweat. In more severe cases, you may also
00:24:09 --> 00:24:12 see blisters or a secondary bacterial infection.
00:24:12 --> 00:24:15 To prevent infections, keep your feet clean and
00:24:15 --> 00:24:19 dry, especially between the toes. Change damp
00:24:19 --> 00:24:23 socks promptly, wear breathable shoes, alternate
00:24:23 --> 00:24:27 pairs daily and use sandals in communal showers
00:24:27 --> 00:24:31 or change rooms. Wash and dry towels and socks
00:24:31 --> 00:24:35 according to their care labels. Keeping in mind
00:24:35 --> 00:24:39 that higher dryer heat can damage socks' elasticity.
00:24:40 --> 00:24:43 Finally, avoid sharing footwear or nail tools.
00:24:44 --> 00:24:47 A balanced diet and stress management encourage
00:24:47 --> 00:24:50 overall health, but they don't treat an athlete's
00:24:50 --> 00:24:53 foot. A pharmacist or health care practitioner
00:24:53 --> 00:24:57 can recommend a non -prescription or prescription
00:24:57 --> 00:25:01 antifungal and explain how to use it. Health
00:25:01 --> 00:25:04 Canada permits proven non -prescription ingredients
00:25:04 --> 00:25:10 like tonafate, endocyclinic acid, or povidone
00:25:10 --> 00:25:14 iodine for athlete's foot. Home remedies and
00:25:14 --> 00:25:17 essential oils aren't proven substitutes and
00:25:17 --> 00:25:20 they can cause irritation, burns, or allergic
00:25:20 --> 00:25:24 reactions. Long foot soaks can also leave your
00:25:24 --> 00:25:28 skin too damp, which can make it worse. See a
00:25:28 --> 00:25:31 professional if it's severe, keeps coming back,
00:25:32 --> 00:25:36 is spreading. isn't improving, or if you have
00:25:36 --> 00:25:38 poor circulation or a weakened immune system.
00:25:39 --> 00:25:43 Understanding povidone-iodine. Povidone-iodine
00:25:43 --> 00:25:46 is a surface antiseptic used on intact skin to
00:25:46 --> 00:25:50 reduce microbes on the surface. It's a drug product
00:25:50 --> 00:25:55 so look for a DIN and follow the label. It can't
00:25:55 --> 00:25:57 penetrate a thick nail plate, so it won't treat
00:25:57 --> 00:26:00 established nail fungus. and you shouldn't rely
00:26:00 --> 00:26:04 on it as a routine rinse after walking barefoot
00:26:04 --> 00:26:08 in a public area. Canadian labels say not to
00:26:08 --> 00:26:11 use it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding and
00:26:11 --> 00:26:14 to ask a health care practitioner first if you
00:26:14 --> 00:26:17 have a thyroid disease, since iodine can be absorbed
00:26:17 --> 00:26:21 through the skin. Stop if you get redness or irritation.
00:26:22 --> 00:26:27 UV shoe devices. UV shoe inserts and sanitizers
00:26:27 --> 00:26:30 give off radiation to control microorganisms.
00:26:30 --> 00:26:33 In Canada, these devices fall under the Pest
00:26:33 --> 00:26:37 Control Products Act. So before you buy or recommend
00:26:37 --> 00:26:40 one, check that it's registered or authorized
00:26:40 --> 00:26:44 under Canadian pest control rules, rather than
00:26:44 --> 00:26:47 assuming it's safe or effective just because
00:26:47 --> 00:26:50 it's on the store shelf. This demonstration shows
00:26:50 --> 00:26:54 how UVC LED light can be used for everyday footwear
00:26:54 --> 00:26:58 care. By emitting germicidal short-wave light
00:26:58 --> 00:27:01 directly into the shoe interior, the technology
00:27:01 --> 00:27:05 helps reduce surface mould, fungi, and odour-causing
00:27:05 --> 00:27:09 bacteria. This demonstration is for informational
00:27:09 --> 00:27:14 purposes only. Household mould removal and the
00:27:14 --> 00:27:18 safe use of bleach. Have you ever noticed mould
00:27:18 --> 00:27:22 growing in a damp corner of your home? Mold often
00:27:22 --> 00:27:25 signals too much moisture. So the first step
00:27:25 --> 00:27:30 is to find a source, repair leaks, dry wet areas
00:27:30 --> 00:27:34 promptly, and improve ventilation or reduce humidity
00:27:34 --> 00:27:38 where possible. Otherwise, the mould may simply
00:27:38 --> 00:27:42 return. Choose the right cleaning method. How
00:27:42 --> 00:27:45 you clean mould depends on the surface. if it's
00:27:45 --> 00:27:48 a small area on a hard, non-porous surface, you
00:27:48 --> 00:27:51 can often clean it with detergent and water, then
00:27:51 --> 00:27:55 dry the area thoroughly. Porous materials are
00:27:55 --> 00:27:58 a different story: mould can penetrate materials
00:27:58 --> 00:28:02 such as drywall, ceiling tiles, insulation, and
00:28:02 --> 00:28:05 wood, making it difficult to remove completely
00:28:05 --> 00:28:09 In some cases, you may need to remove and replace
00:28:09 --> 00:28:13 these materials if mould covers a large area and keeps
00:28:13 --> 00:28:17 coming back, or is linked to sewage or contaminated
00:28:17 --> 00:28:21 water, it's best to hire a professional. Bleach
00:28:21 --> 00:28:25 isn't always the answer. Many people reach for
00:28:25 --> 00:28:28 bleach when they see mould, but it's not a universal
00:28:28 --> 00:28:31 solution. Household chlorine bleach can irritate
00:28:31 --> 00:28:34 your eye, skin, and respiratory tract, while
00:28:34 --> 00:28:37 concentrated products can cause serious chemical
00:28:37 --> 00:28:41 burns. It may also be unsuitable for porous materials
00:28:41 --> 00:28:45 where mould can grow beneath the surface. If you
00:28:45 --> 00:28:48 choose to use a cleaning product, read the label
00:28:48 --> 00:28:51 carefully and follow its directions for dilution,
00:28:51 --> 00:28:55 ventilation, protective equipment, suitable surfaces,
00:28:55 --> 00:28:59 and contact time. Important safety rule: never
00:28:59 --> 00:29:02 mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids,
00:29:02 --> 00:29:06 or other cleaning products. Mixing them can release
00:29:06 --> 00:29:10 dangerous gases or cause hazardous chemical reactions.
00:29:11 --> 00:29:14 Always keep cleaning products away from children
00:29:14 --> 00:29:17 and pets. Also don't substitute pool shock or
00:29:17 --> 00:29:20 other concentrated pool chemicals for household
00:29:20 --> 00:29:24 cleaning products. These chemicals can be highly
00:29:24 --> 00:29:27 corrosive and dangerous if handled or mixed incorrectly.
00:29:28 --> 00:29:32 And remember, never apply bleach, pool shock,
00:29:32 --> 00:29:35 or household mould cleaners to your feet, nails,
00:29:36 --> 00:29:38 or any other part of your body. They are not
00:29:38 --> 00:29:41 treatments for fungal infections and can cause
00:29:41 --> 00:29:44 serious injury. When dealing with mould, avoid
00:29:44 --> 00:29:48 disturbing it unnecessarily and choose a cleaning
00:29:48 --> 00:29:52 method suited to the affected material. You may
00:29:52 --> 00:29:55 have heard claims that bleach causes mould to
00:29:55 --> 00:29:59 release mycotoxins. However, this isn't established.
00:29:59 --> 00:30:03 Certain moulds can produce mycotoxins under specific
00:30:03 --> 00:30:06 conditions, but bleach itself is not the source
00:30:06 --> 00:30:10 of these toxins. The priority is to remove mould
00:30:10 --> 00:30:13 safely, use appropriate cleaning methods, and
00:30:13 --> 00:30:16 address the moisture problem so it doesn't return.
00:30:17 --> 00:30:19 Health Canada's guidance specifically advises
00:30:19 --> 00:30:23 against using bleach to clean up household mould.
00:30:23 --> 00:30:26 One final point: if you have asthma, significant
00:30:26 --> 00:30:30 allergies, a weakened immune system, or other
00:30:30 --> 00:30:33 respiratory concerns, it's best to avoid cleaning
00:30:33 --> 00:30:37 mould yourself and seek appropriate advice. And
00:30:37 --> 00:30:41 now we'll take time for a commercial break. Welcome
00:30:41 --> 00:30:44 back. Why do topical treatments so commonly fall
00:30:44 --> 00:30:48 short, we come into contact with bacteria, fungi
00:30:48 --> 00:30:52 and viruses every day; they're even in the air
00:30:52 --> 00:30:54 we breathe; your body defends against them with
00:30:54 --> 00:30:58 several layers, including healthy skin, local immune
00:30:58 --> 00:31:01 cells and the helpful microbes that live on your
00:31:01 --> 00:31:05 skin. Lots of people battle toenail fungus for
00:31:05 --> 00:31:09 months, even with consistent topical care, that's
00:31:09 --> 00:31:11 usually not because the product doesn't work
00:31:11 --> 00:31:15 on the surface, a few things get in the way first
00:31:15 --> 00:31:18 the keratin shield, the nail plate, is thick and
00:31:18 --> 00:31:21 dense, so oils and liquids struggle to reach the
00:31:21 --> 00:31:25 nail bed where the fungus lives; second, circulation
00:31:25 --> 00:31:29 and health conditions that decrease circulation can
00:31:29 --> 00:31:32 affect foot wellness and healing, especially with
00:31:32 --> 00:31:36 diabetes or vascular disease, tight shoes and
00:31:36 --> 00:31:39 inactivity can reduce comfort, but we shouldn't
00:31:39 --> 00:31:42 assume they cause a fungal nail infection. Third,
00:31:42 --> 00:31:46 slow growth. A toenail can take up to 18 months
00:31:46 --> 00:31:50 to grow out fully, so progress is slow even when
00:31:50 --> 00:31:53 everything's growing well. That's one reason
00:31:53 --> 00:31:56 to follow a clinician's guidance instead of switching
00:31:56 --> 00:32:01 products every few weeks. And fourth, reinfection
00:32:01 --> 00:32:04 if you keep wearing the same shoes without sanitizing.
00:32:04 --> 00:32:07 You expose your nails and skin to dormant spores.
00:32:07 --> 00:32:11 Too much moisture, tiny skin tears, and tight
00:32:11 --> 00:32:14 shoes weaken your skin's natural barrier and
00:32:14 --> 00:32:17 make infection easier. Keeping your feet dry,
00:32:17 --> 00:32:20 protected, and comfortable helps keep that barrier
00:32:20 --> 00:32:24 strong. Public pools and international habits.
00:32:24 --> 00:32:28 In some public swimming complexes, swimmers have
00:32:28 --> 00:32:31 traditionally walked through an antiseptic foot
00:32:31 --> 00:32:35 bath, often diluted iodine or another disinfectant
00:32:35 --> 00:32:39 before and after the pool deck to reduce barefoot
00:32:39 --> 00:32:42 cross -contamination. The evidence that it helps
00:32:42 --> 00:32:46 is limited. Many places rely on water chlorination.
00:32:46 --> 00:32:51 So the simplest personal defence anywhere in
00:32:51 --> 00:32:54 the world is still waterproof flip -flops or
00:32:54 --> 00:32:59 shower sandals. Structure and Pressure Corns
00:32:59 --> 00:33:01 and calluses come from friction and pressure
00:33:01 --> 00:33:05 over time. Your skin thickens to protect itself.
00:33:05 --> 00:33:09 Sometimes they start as a blister, become a callus,
00:33:09 --> 00:33:13 and eventually turn into a painful corn. I had
00:33:13 --> 00:33:16 this myself on both little toes after I bought
00:33:16 --> 00:33:19 a pair of shoes that were too tight. Unfortunately,
00:33:19 --> 00:33:23 the shoe stretchers didn't help. The corn disappeared
00:33:23 --> 00:33:26 once I stopped wearing them. What's the difference?
00:33:26 --> 00:33:29 Calluses are broad, flat patches of thickened
00:33:29 --> 00:33:32 skin, usually on weight -bearing areas like the
00:33:32 --> 00:33:35 heels and balls of the feet. They're usually
00:33:35 --> 00:33:39 not painful, but can get uncomfortable if they
00:33:39 --> 00:33:43 get too thick. Corns are smaller, rounder, and
00:33:43 --> 00:33:47 deeper. They tend to form on non -weight -bearing
00:33:47 --> 00:33:50 areas, like the tops inside of the toes, but
00:33:50 --> 00:33:53 that's not absolute. A corn has a hard central
00:33:53 --> 00:33:56 core, usually shaped like an upside-down cone,
00:33:57 --> 00:34:00 and its point can press on a nerve and hurt.
00:34:01 --> 00:34:04 They can also develop on the knees, elbows, and
00:34:04 --> 00:34:07 hands, especially if you kneel at work or do
00:34:07 --> 00:34:11 repetitive tasks. To manage them, address the
00:34:11 --> 00:34:16 root cause. Frequent causes include shoes that
00:34:16 --> 00:34:21 are too tight, too loose, or high -heeled, poorly
00:34:21 --> 00:34:25 padded footwear, going sockless, gait and posture
00:34:25 --> 00:34:29 issues, foot deformities like bunions and hammer
00:34:29 --> 00:34:33 toes, high-impact activity or long hours on your
00:34:33 --> 00:34:37 feet, and work habits like kneeling or manual
00:34:37 --> 00:34:42 labor. Care and prevention. Soak your feet briefly
00:34:42 --> 00:34:46 in warm water to soften the skin, but skip soaking
00:34:46 --> 00:34:50 if you have neuropathy or poor circulation. One
00:34:50 --> 00:34:54 firm rule. Never cut corns or calluses at home.
00:34:54 --> 00:34:58 It can lead to infection, open wounds, and more
00:34:58 --> 00:35:02 pain. See a professional, especially if you have
00:35:02 --> 00:35:06 poor circulation problems or thin, sensitive skin.
00:35:06 --> 00:35:09 If you've ever been tempted to take a blade to
00:35:09 --> 00:35:13 a stubborn callus, here's another reason not
00:35:13 --> 00:35:18 to cut and hold that thought. Slicing off dead
00:35:18 --> 00:35:22 skin feels like an instant win. but it backfires,
00:35:22 --> 00:35:26 your body treats it like an injury, and it goes
00:35:26 --> 00:35:29 into repair overdrive, so the thick skin comes
00:35:29 --> 00:35:33 back even faster. Use a foot file or pumice stone
00:35:33 --> 00:35:36 to get longer-lasting results. You gradually
00:35:36 --> 00:35:39 smooth things down without triggering that emergency
00:35:39 --> 00:35:42 response. It takes more patience, but the results
00:35:42 --> 00:35:47 last. If filing sounds like too much elbow grease,
00:35:47 --> 00:35:50 enzyme -based foot masks are another option.
00:35:51 --> 00:35:54 These peel -off bodies use fruit enzymes like
00:35:54 --> 00:35:57 papain from papaya or bromelain from pineapple
00:35:57 --> 00:36:01 along with mild acids to break down keratin cell
00:36:01 --> 00:36:05 walls and loosen the glue that bonds between
00:36:05 --> 00:36:09 dead skin cells. They work on the surface layer
00:36:09 --> 00:36:12 and pairing a regular mask with light filing
00:36:12 --> 00:36:17 can keep rough skin in check. Although they offer
00:36:17 --> 00:36:20 an alternative to heavy filing, they aren't risk
00:36:20 --> 00:36:24 -free. Papain and bromelain can irritate skin
00:36:24 --> 00:36:27 and cause blisters or allergic reactions in sensitive
00:36:27 --> 00:36:31 individuals. Always follow product directions
00:36:31 --> 00:36:34 and patch tests if you have sensitive skin or
00:36:34 --> 00:36:38 known related allergies. Stop using them if irritation
00:36:38 --> 00:36:42 develops. Avoid enzyme peels on broken, irritated
00:36:42 --> 00:36:45 or infected skin and see a health care professional
00:36:45 --> 00:36:49 first if you have neuropathy or poor circulation.
00:36:50 --> 00:36:53 Contact a medical professional first if you have
00:36:53 --> 00:36:56 poor circulation, which makes it easier for infection
00:36:56 --> 00:37:00 to develop. Daily moisturizers help prevent hard
00:37:00 --> 00:37:04 skin buildup. Foot scrubs and foams provide mild
00:37:04 --> 00:37:07 exfoliation and creams with urea or salicylic
00:37:07 --> 00:37:11 acid can soften stubborn spots. A professional
00:37:11 --> 00:37:15 pedicure with a qualified esthetician or medical
00:37:15 --> 00:37:19 pedicurist can safely reduce thickened skin and relieve
00:37:19 --> 00:37:22 pressure and help monitor changes in your feet
00:37:22 --> 00:37:26 for protection, foam, waterproof callus cushions
00:37:26 --> 00:37:30 can give instant relief from rubbing and choose
00:37:30 --> 00:37:33 shoes with a wide toe box with good arch support
00:37:34 --> 00:37:37 Skip the high heels and narrow shoes that squash
00:37:37 --> 00:37:41 your feet and use padding as needed. Posture
00:37:41 --> 00:37:44 and gait. How you walk and how your feet line
00:37:44 --> 00:37:47 up can create irregular pressure points, and if
00:37:47 --> 00:37:50 you don't address them, corns and calluses can
00:37:50 --> 00:37:54 return even after you remove them. Properly designed
00:37:54 --> 00:37:58 shoe fits, and orthotics can directly reduce friction,
00:37:58 --> 00:38:01 although I have heard of people developing issues
00:38:01 --> 00:38:04 with orthotics that weren't properly designed.
00:38:06 --> 00:38:09 Chiropractors or osteopaths can assess posture
00:38:09 --> 00:38:13 and spinal alignment, which may affect gait and
00:38:13 --> 00:38:18 balance. Podiatrists make custom orthotics, modify
00:38:18 --> 00:38:22 shoes, and design custom footwear to reduce pressure.
00:38:23 --> 00:38:25 Together, these approaches may help over time,
00:38:25 --> 00:38:29 though results vary, claims that posture
00:38:29 --> 00:38:32 work or spinal adjustments can permanently correct
00:38:32 --> 00:38:35 bunions or corns aren't clinically established.
00:38:36 --> 00:38:40 The main point is that removing a corn or callus
00:38:40 --> 00:38:43 isn't enough. If the cause continues, it will
00:38:43 --> 00:38:47 return. Whether it's your stride, your shoes,
00:38:47 --> 00:38:50 or your foot mechanics, finding the source is
00:38:50 --> 00:38:53 the key to long -term results. Rethinking the
00:38:53 --> 00:38:57 ingrown toenail. An ingrown toenail is usually
00:38:57 --> 00:39:00 described as a nail digging into the skin beside
00:39:00 --> 00:39:03 it. But some clinicians now think many causes
00:39:03 --> 00:39:07 are really overgrown skin around the toe. In
00:39:07 --> 00:39:10 that view, the nail isn't piercing healthy tissue.
00:39:11 --> 00:39:15 Instead, extra soft skin bulges alongside the
00:39:15 --> 00:39:20 nail, most often on the big toe. When tight shoes
00:39:21 --> 00:39:24 or your body weight squeezes that tissue, it becomes
00:39:24 --> 00:39:28 inflamed, swollen, and painful, and it can create
00:39:28 --> 00:39:31 a curve that looks like a nail problem traditionally
00:39:31 --> 00:39:34 treatment focused on narrowing or removing part
00:39:34 --> 00:39:38 of the nail by destroying some of the nail root
00:39:38 --> 00:39:42 Those procedures can fail to change how the nail
00:39:42 --> 00:39:46 looks and recur if they don't address the underlying
00:39:46 --> 00:39:50 soft tissue recurrence rates depend heavily
00:39:50 --> 00:39:54 on the specific procedure performed. They range
00:39:54 --> 00:39:58 from 5 % on chemical matrix procedures that destroy
00:39:58 --> 00:40:04 sections of the nail bed matrix to 70 % when
00:40:04 --> 00:40:07 removing part of the nail without treating the
00:40:07 --> 00:40:12 matrix. So ask your doctor or licensed foot specialist
00:40:12 --> 00:40:17 which approach suits you. The Vandenbos procedure.
00:40:18 --> 00:40:21 For severe or recurring causes driven by soft
00:40:21 --> 00:40:24 tissue growth, some surgeons use the van den
00:40:24 --> 00:40:28 Bosch procedure first described in 1959. Instead
00:40:28 --> 00:40:32 of cutting into the nail bed, the surgeon removes
00:40:32 --> 00:40:35 the extra soft tissue along the side of the toe.
00:40:36 --> 00:40:39 That relieves the pressure, and the nail can grow
00:40:39 --> 00:40:43 out with the skin in the way. The wound isn't
00:40:43 --> 00:40:45 stitched closed, it heals from the bottom up.
00:40:46 --> 00:40:50 called healing by secondary intention, so careful
00:40:50 --> 00:40:54 aftercare is essential. In Canada, availability
00:40:54 --> 00:40:58 and practitioner scope vary considerably by province
00:40:58 --> 00:41:02 and local health region. Ask your family physician
00:41:02 --> 00:41:05 or a licensed foot specialist for guidance on
00:41:05 --> 00:41:09 local availability and to determine who performs
00:41:09 --> 00:41:13 soft tissue toe procedures in your area. In some
00:41:13 --> 00:41:15 other countries like the United States and the
00:41:15 --> 00:41:21 UK, podiatrists and podiatric surgeons may perform
00:41:21 --> 00:41:24 soft tissue procedures like this within their
00:41:24 --> 00:41:27 scope. An important safety note: if you have
00:41:27 --> 00:41:31 poor circulation or peripheral neuropathy, never
00:41:31 --> 00:41:35 try DIY remedies, aggressive nail trimming or
00:41:35 --> 00:41:38 foot soaks. Small breaks in the skin can quickly
00:41:38 --> 00:41:43 become serious non -healing ulcers. please see
00:41:43 --> 00:41:46 a licensed chiropodist, podiatrist or physician.
00:41:47 --> 00:41:50 If surgery isn't an option right now, taping
00:41:50 --> 00:41:54 might offer temporary relief. Attach flexible
00:41:54 --> 00:41:57 waterproof medical tape on the outer edge of
00:41:57 --> 00:42:01 the extra toe skin. Gently pull the skin away
00:42:01 --> 00:42:04 from the nail edge, then wrap the tape securely
00:42:04 --> 00:42:07 under the toe and extend it on the other side.
00:42:07 --> 00:42:10 This eases pressure on the irritated skin, giving
00:42:10 --> 00:42:15 it time to rest. It won't permanently fix soft
00:42:15 --> 00:42:18 tissue overgrowth, and it isn't suitable if you
00:42:18 --> 00:42:22 have diabetes, neuropathy, poor circulation or
00:42:22 --> 00:42:25 signs of infection like redness, warmth, swelling
00:42:25 --> 00:42:30 or pus. Stop if it hurts or irritates your skin
00:42:30 --> 00:42:34 and see a medical practitioner. In many cases,
00:42:34 --> 00:42:37 the nail isn't the main problem. The extra tissue
00:42:37 --> 00:42:41 around it is. If that sounds like you, ask your
00:42:41 --> 00:42:43 doctor whether a referral to someone trained
00:42:43 --> 00:42:47 in soft tissue techniques makes sense. For prevention
00:42:47 --> 00:42:50 and aftercare, trim your nails straight across,
00:42:50 --> 00:42:54 not curved. Keep your feet clean, dry, and moisturized.
00:42:54 --> 00:42:57 Avoid tight shoes and socks that squeeze your
00:42:57 --> 00:43:01 toes. and weight management and custom orthotics
00:43:01 --> 00:43:05 may help spread pressure more evenly, and now
00:43:05 --> 00:43:08 we'll take time for a commercial break welcome
00:43:08 --> 00:43:12 back. Bunions: a bunion is a structural change
00:43:12 --> 00:43:16 around the base joint of the big toe; non-surgical
00:43:16 --> 00:43:19 steps may ease pressure and discomfort, but they
00:43:19 --> 00:43:22 don't reliably reverse the underlying bone alignment
00:43:23 --> 00:43:25 Choosing shoes with enough room for your toes
00:43:25 --> 00:43:29 can greatly reduce rubbing and irritation. Avoid
00:43:29 --> 00:43:31 stylish shoes that squeeze the front of your
00:43:31 --> 00:43:35 foot if they make things worse. Soft toe spacers
00:43:35 --> 00:43:38 or protective padding can help some people for
00:43:38 --> 00:43:42 short periods. Some manufacturers claim they
00:43:42 --> 00:43:45 slowly realign the bone, but the jury is still
00:43:45 --> 00:43:48 out. While they don't permanently realign the
00:43:48 --> 00:43:52 bones, they shouldn't cause pain, numbness or
00:43:52 --> 00:43:56 skin marks. Gentle movement or light massage
00:43:56 --> 00:43:59 can also improve mobility and provide short -term
00:43:59 --> 00:44:02 comfort but don't use them to correct a bunion
00:44:02 --> 00:44:07 or treat inflammation. Avoid forcibly manipulating
00:44:07 --> 00:44:11 a painful joint. It's also worth looking at how
00:44:11 --> 00:44:14 running shoe design affects toe alignment and
00:44:14 --> 00:44:17 foot biomechanics. Many traditional athletic
00:44:17 --> 00:44:22 shoes have a narrow tapered toe box that squeezes
00:44:22 --> 00:44:25 the toes together. along with an elevated heel
00:44:25 --> 00:44:29 that shifts extra body weight forward onto the
00:44:29 --> 00:44:32 ball of the foot. Over time, this constant forward
00:44:32 --> 00:44:36 pressure and side compression can push the big
00:44:36 --> 00:44:40 toe out of alignment and worsen a bunion. Choosing
00:44:40 --> 00:44:43 athletic shoes with a wide, foot-shaped toe box
00:44:43 --> 00:44:47 and a lower heel-to-toe drop lets your toes play
00:44:47 --> 00:44:51 naturally and take in impact the way nature intended.
00:44:52 --> 00:44:56 What about castor oil packs? Traditionally, it's
00:44:56 --> 00:44:59 been used to help lymphatic drainage. The evidence
00:44:59 --> 00:45:02 that it shrinks bunions just isn't there. If
00:45:02 --> 00:45:05 you like using castor oil as a moisturizer, keep
00:45:05 --> 00:45:09 it off broken or irritated skin. And don't use
00:45:09 --> 00:45:12 tight or hot wraps that could hurt your skin.
00:45:12 --> 00:45:15 Get assessed if pain persists and shoes become
00:45:15 --> 00:45:19 difficult to wear. The joint turns red or swollen
00:45:19 --> 00:45:23 or walking is affected. Understanding soft tissue
00:45:23 --> 00:45:27 relief for bunions. A bunion is a structural
00:45:27 --> 00:45:30 change around the joint at the base of the big
00:45:30 --> 00:45:33 toe. You might occasionally see a client whose
00:45:33 --> 00:45:35 bunion seems smaller or much less noticeable
00:45:35 --> 00:45:39 after a year of regular reflexology, it's
00:45:39 --> 00:45:42 easy to wonder if the massage actually reduced
00:45:42 --> 00:45:45 it. What's usually happening behind the scenes
00:45:45 --> 00:45:49 isn't a change in the bone itself but a major
00:45:49 --> 00:45:53 relief in the surrounding soft tissue. Bunions
00:45:53 --> 00:45:57 often involve fluid buildup, tight muscle tension,
00:45:57 --> 00:46:01 and inflamed bursitis around the joint. Soothing
00:46:01 --> 00:46:04 that swelling and relaxing tight tendons can
00:46:04 --> 00:46:07 make the joint look noticeably less enlarged
00:46:07 --> 00:46:10 and feel much more comfortable. Plus, clients
00:46:10 --> 00:46:14 who commit to weekly foot care often start wearing
00:46:14 --> 00:46:17 better shoes, which takes huge pressure off the
00:46:17 --> 00:46:21 area so while reflexology can't physically move
00:46:21 --> 00:46:25 or shrink the bone, it can do a fantastic job
00:46:25 --> 00:46:28 of calming down the fluid pain and tension around
00:46:28 --> 00:46:32 it, the whole body posture connection, the bunions
00:46:32 --> 00:46:34 aren't often discussed in relation to overall
00:46:34 --> 00:46:37 body alignment established clinical risk factors
00:46:37 --> 00:46:41 can include genetic predisposition, foot structure
00:46:41 --> 00:46:45 such as flat feet or excessive pronation, joint
00:46:45 --> 00:46:50 hypermobility, and inflammatory arthritis with
00:46:50 --> 00:46:54 narrow footwear as an aggravating factor. Some
00:46:54 --> 00:46:57 holistic practitioners propose that changes higher
00:46:57 --> 00:47:00 up the kinetic change, such as pelvic tilting
00:47:00 --> 00:47:03 or glute weakness, increase weight-bearing stress
00:47:03 --> 00:47:07 on the forefoot. However, posture alignment and
00:47:07 --> 00:47:10 spinal adjustments have not been clinically proven
00:47:10 --> 00:47:13 to prevent, correct, or reverse the underlying
00:47:13 --> 00:47:17 alignment of a bunion. Knee problems that require
00:47:17 --> 00:47:20 surgery, hip issues, or tightness in the plantar
00:47:20 --> 00:47:24 fascia. the thick band of tissue running along
00:47:24 --> 00:47:27 the bottom of your foot can change how you carry
00:47:27 --> 00:47:30 your weight-restricted fascia or temporary limping
00:47:30 --> 00:47:34 can shift more load to one leg and increase pressure
00:47:34 --> 00:47:38 on the big toe joint during each step, so managing
00:47:38 --> 00:47:41 by being uncomfortable often means looking at the
00:47:41 --> 00:47:45 whole change that can mean combining foot care
00:47:45 --> 00:47:48 with posture awareness, post -surgery rehab,
00:47:49 --> 00:47:52 soft tissue release, and hip strengthening guided
00:47:52 --> 00:47:56 by a qualified professional. Let's return to
00:47:56 --> 00:47:59 daily foot movement. While passive techniques
00:47:59 --> 00:48:02 like reflexology can soothe joint tightness and
00:48:02 --> 00:48:06 fluid buildup; active daily movements give your
00:48:06 --> 00:48:08 feet the structural engagement manual therapy
00:48:08 --> 00:48:13 can provide. Combining passive relief with daily
00:48:13 --> 00:48:17 foot exercises such as ankle pumps, toe splays
00:48:17 --> 00:48:22 towel curls, heel-toe raises, and ball rolls help
00:48:22 --> 00:48:25 keep your feet flexible, strengthen the small
00:48:25 --> 00:48:29 muscles in your feet and supports good foot mechanics
00:48:29 --> 00:48:32 spending a few minutes a day on these simple
00:48:32 --> 00:48:35 movements helps keep your feet mobile and strong
00:48:35 --> 00:48:39 and comfortable over time. Some holistic practitioners
00:48:39 --> 00:48:43 look at fascia, the connective tissue that forms
00:48:43 --> 00:48:46 a continuous wrap around the muscles and organs,
00:48:46 --> 00:48:51 like a continuous container, and suggest that
00:48:51 --> 00:48:53 manual therapies like structural integration,
00:48:54 --> 00:48:59 Rolfing may help balance full-body tension and
00:48:59 --> 00:49:03 improve how load travels through the feet. Experts
00:49:03 --> 00:49:06 claim that easing soft tissue tightness through
00:49:06 --> 00:49:09 the kinetic chain might improve walking mechanics.
00:49:10 --> 00:49:14 and indirectly reduce pressure on corns or sore
00:49:14 --> 00:49:18 joint tissues. However, like posture work and
00:49:18 --> 00:49:22 spinal adjustments, structural fascial work hasn't
00:49:22 --> 00:49:25 been clinically shown to correct underlying bone
00:49:25 --> 00:49:29 alignment, reverse a bunion, or permanently prevent
00:49:29 --> 00:49:33 corns. Bunion surgical options and factors generally
00:49:33 --> 00:49:37 fall into a few key approaches. Shaving the bump.
00:49:38 --> 00:49:40 You might hear about surgeons simply shaving
00:49:40 --> 00:49:43 down the protruding bump on the side of the big
00:49:43 --> 00:49:46 toe joint. While removing that extra bone reduces
00:49:46 --> 00:49:48 the visible bump, it's only partial treatment
00:49:48 --> 00:49:52 because the underlying issue is the angle of
00:49:52 --> 00:49:55 the entire first metatarsal. Bone leaning outward,
00:49:55 --> 00:49:58 Shaving the bump alone doesn't correct the root
00:49:58 --> 00:50:02 alignment, and the bunion often recurs. Bone
00:50:02 --> 00:50:06 cutting and realignment. This is the standard
00:50:06 --> 00:50:09 procedure for mild to moderate bunions. The surgeon
00:50:09 --> 00:50:12 cuts and shifts the misaligned bone back and
00:50:12 --> 00:50:16 secures it with pins or screws. Surgeons often
00:50:16 --> 00:50:20 perform a partial bone shave alongside bone cutting
00:50:20 --> 00:50:23 and realignment to smooth out the edge of the
00:50:23 --> 00:50:27 joint once the main bone is realigned. Joint fusions
00:50:27 --> 00:50:31 procedure reserved for severe bunions, severe
00:50:31 --> 00:50:35 joint arthritis or joint hypermobility. This procedure
00:50:35 --> 00:50:39 removes the damaged joint surfaces and fuses
00:50:39 --> 00:50:42 the bone to create a solid, stable base surgery
00:50:42 --> 00:50:45 is never recommended just for cosmetic reasons.
00:50:45 --> 00:50:49 It is strictly reserved for functional pain and
00:50:49 --> 00:50:52 mobility problems; elective bone procedures are
00:50:52 --> 00:50:55 generally not advised for people with severe
00:50:55 --> 00:50:58 circulation problems, active foot infections, or
00:50:58 --> 00:51:01 heavy nicotine use since these conditions can
00:51:01 --> 00:51:04 seriously affect blood flow, bone healing, and
00:51:04 --> 00:51:08 wound recovery. Bringing everything together when
00:51:08 --> 00:51:11 treatment isn't working. If you've been treating
00:51:11 --> 00:51:14 a toenail fungal infection for over a year with
00:51:14 --> 00:51:17 little or no progress, go back to your doctor,
00:51:17 --> 00:51:20 podiatrist, or chiropractor and re -examine the
00:51:20 --> 00:51:23 plan. Persistent matters, but so does understanding
00:51:23 --> 00:51:27 why it isn't working. A toenail infection is
00:51:27 --> 00:51:30 a localized surface-level condition, but some
00:51:30 --> 00:51:33 health conditions make infections more likely
00:51:33 --> 00:51:36 or harder to clear. including poor circulation
00:51:36 --> 00:51:40 and a weakened immune system. If it keeps returning
00:51:40 --> 00:51:43 or won't improve, ask your doctor to screen for
00:51:43 --> 00:51:46 root health factors rather than assuming your
00:51:46 --> 00:51:50 diet or lifestyle is to blame. Natural health
00:51:50 --> 00:51:54 products: what to know? Vitamin D3 supports general
00:51:54 --> 00:51:58 health, but it isn't a treatment for fungal infections
00:51:58 --> 00:52:02 and medical supervision should manage high doses.
00:52:03 --> 00:52:07 Propolis, the resin bees collect from trees, shows
00:52:07 --> 00:52:10 up in some natural health products; it isn't an
00:52:10 --> 00:52:13 established treatment for nail fungus; check any
00:52:13 --> 00:52:17 product label for an NPN and for what it's actually
00:52:17 --> 00:52:21 licensed for and copper-infused socks and insoles
00:52:21 --> 00:52:24 don't assume they prevent or treat fungal infections
00:52:24 --> 00:52:27 unless the product is properly authorized and
00:52:27 --> 00:52:30 has evidence for that use, there's no substitute
00:52:30 --> 00:52:35 for good hygiene or medical care, classic frameworks
00:52:35 --> 00:52:39 reflexology and traditional Chinese medicine
00:52:39 --> 00:52:42 offer traditional ways of thinking about well-being
00:52:42 --> 00:52:46 -being with ideas like organ correspondences
00:52:46 --> 00:52:50 and energetic patterns; these are classic perspectives.
00:52:50 --> 00:52:52 They aren't medically established explanations
00:52:52 --> 00:52:55 for plantar warts, athlete's foot, or nail fungus
00:52:56 --> 00:53:00 And a foot symptom can't on its own tell us there's
00:53:00 --> 00:53:03 a problem with the liver, kidneys, adrenals,
00:53:03 --> 00:53:06 digestion, or the lymphatic system. A word on
00:53:06 --> 00:53:09 live blood analysis. When a fungal infection
00:53:09 --> 00:53:12 won't clear, some people turn to alternative
00:53:12 --> 00:53:16 screenings like live blood cell analysis, also
00:53:16 --> 00:53:20 called dark field microscopy, looking for fungi
00:53:20 --> 00:53:24 in the blood. Standard laboratory medicine doesn't
00:53:24 --> 00:53:28 accept it as a diagnostic tool, and no controlled
00:53:28 --> 00:53:31 clinical studies support its accuracy. Normal
00:53:31 --> 00:53:35 blood particles can easily be mistaken for yeast
00:53:35 --> 00:53:38 or fungi under the microscope. To diagnose nail
00:53:38 --> 00:53:41 fungus, a licensed provider must send a nail
00:53:41 --> 00:53:45 clipping to an accredited lab. Household Cleaners
00:53:45 --> 00:53:48 and Your Skin. Let's talk about bleach and other
00:53:48 --> 00:53:50 household products that people sometimes try
00:53:50 --> 00:53:54 as home remedies for foot or nail fungus. Never
00:53:54 --> 00:53:56 apply chlorine bleach, pool chemicals, or household
00:53:56 --> 00:53:59 cleaning products to your skin or nails. They
00:53:59 --> 00:54:03 can cause irritation, chemical burns, and tissue
00:54:03 --> 00:54:06 damage. Damaged skin may also be more vulnerable
00:54:06 --> 00:54:10 to infection. Similarly, hydrogen peroxide is
00:54:10 --> 00:54:12 not an established treatment for fungal nail
00:54:12 --> 00:54:16 infections or athlete's foot. Repeated use can
00:54:16 --> 00:54:19 irritate tissue and may interfere with healing,
00:54:19 --> 00:54:23 so avoid using it as a foot soak or on broken
00:54:23 --> 00:54:27 inflamed skin. Don't use borax, boric acid, vinegar,
00:54:28 --> 00:54:31 baking soda, or other household substances as
00:54:31 --> 00:54:34 unproven treatments for fungal infections. They
00:54:34 --> 00:54:37 may irritate or damage the skin and can delay
00:54:37 --> 00:54:41 appropriate care. If you suspect a fungal nail
00:54:41 --> 00:54:43 infection, consult a qualified healthcare professional
00:54:43 --> 00:54:47 to confirm the cause and discuss suitable treatment.
00:54:47 --> 00:54:51 Keeping your tools clean. Bleach and other corrosive
00:54:51 --> 00:54:54 products can also pit and damage metal tools.
00:54:55 --> 00:54:58 For personal tools at home, 70% isopropyl alcohol
00:54:58 --> 00:55:02 is a commonly used non -corrosive option. So
00:55:02 --> 00:55:06 here's a safe routine. After trimming, wash your
00:55:06 --> 00:55:09 clippers with soap and water and dry them, then
00:55:09 --> 00:55:12 fully submerge them in a household disinfectant
00:55:12 --> 00:55:16 or in 70 % isopropyl alcohol for at least 10
00:55:16 --> 00:55:19 minutes following the product directions. A quick
00:55:19 --> 00:55:23 alcohol wipe isn't sterilization and never use
00:55:23 --> 00:55:26 a tool on an infected nail and then on healthy nails
00:55:26 --> 00:55:29 without proper cleaning and full of disinfection
00:55:29 --> 00:55:32 Don't share your tools. If you're a professional,
00:55:33 --> 00:55:35 provincial and local public health requirements
00:55:35 --> 00:55:38 apply, including infection prevention and control
00:55:38 --> 00:55:43 or IPAC guidance. That means using methods that
00:55:43 --> 00:55:46 suit the instrument like a disinfectant with
00:55:46 --> 00:55:49 a Health Canada DIN, autoclaving or single
00:55:49 --> 00:55:52 -use disposal tools shared as required where
00:55:52 --> 00:55:55 you work. Wrapping up, conventional treatments
00:55:55 --> 00:55:58 for plantar warts, athlete's foot or nail fungus
00:55:58 --> 00:56:02 can help. But lasting relief often comes from
00:56:02 --> 00:56:05 looking at the whole picture. So the next time
00:56:05 --> 00:56:08 you or a client has what seems like an ingrown
00:56:08 --> 00:56:11 toenail, pause and ask, is it really the nail?
00:56:12 --> 00:56:15 Could it be extra soft tissue, poor footwear,
00:56:15 --> 00:56:19 or ongoing inflammation? Focusing on the tissue,
00:56:19 --> 00:56:22 not just the nail, may give you longer-lasting
00:56:22 --> 00:56:26 relief. If a toenail fungus won't go away, ask
00:56:26 --> 00:56:29 your doctor whether poor circulation or a weakened
00:56:29 --> 00:56:32 immune system could be involved good general
00:56:32 --> 00:56:35 health habits support your body overall but they
00:56:35 --> 00:56:38 don't treat fungal infections and persistent
00:56:38 --> 00:56:41 changes warrant a professional assessment. A little
00:56:41 --> 00:56:44 sun exposure helps your body make vitamin D and
00:56:44 --> 00:56:47 sunlight is a practical way to dry damp shoes
00:56:47 --> 00:56:50 but it doesn't sterilize them or replace good
00:56:50 --> 00:56:54 foot hygiene with good posture and comfortable
00:56:54 --> 00:56:57 weight. Clean, dry footwear can reduce foot strain
00:56:57 --> 00:57:01 and support whole-body alignment. In the end,
00:57:01 --> 00:57:04 every mindful step matters, whether you pick
00:57:04 --> 00:57:07 better shoes, try dental reflexology, manage
00:57:07 --> 00:57:10 stress, or use a cosmetic oil on dry skin; it
00:57:10 --> 00:57:14 all helps. If topical treatments aren't working
00:57:14 --> 00:57:17 or feel too harsh, remember this: your skin barrier
00:57:17 --> 00:57:21 is your first line of defence, not a combat zone.
00:57:21 --> 00:57:25 Aggressive chemical soaps, unverified home remedies,
00:57:25 --> 00:57:28 and tight plastic wraps often do more harm than
00:57:28 --> 00:57:31 good. With inflammation, skin breakdown, and
00:57:31 --> 00:57:34 burns, real relief comes from gentle daily hygiene,
00:57:34 --> 00:57:38 comfortable shoes, and a licensed foot specialist
00:57:38 --> 00:57:42 like a doctor's. chiropodist or podiatrist for
00:57:42 --> 00:57:46 an accurate lab-confirmed diagnosis and evidence
00:57:46 --> 00:57:49 -based care. Thank you so much for listening.
00:57:49 --> 00:57:52 You can find me through the link in the show
00:57:52 --> 00:57:56 notes. Take good care of those feet for educational
00:57:56 --> 00:58:00 purposes only. This guide is designed exclusively
00:58:00 --> 00:58:03 for general informational and educational training.
00:58:03 --> 00:58:06 It does not constitute medical advice or diagnosis
00:58:06 --> 00:58:10 or clinical treatment. Foot symptoms alone cannot
00:58:10 --> 00:58:14 diagnose an underlying bodily condition, and
00:58:14 --> 00:58:16 this material is not a substitute for evaluation
00:58:16 --> 00:58:20 by a licensed physician, podiatrist, or chiropodist.
00:58:20 --> 00:58:24 Scope of practice and regulations. Estheticians
00:58:24 --> 00:58:27 and non -licensed providers must comply fully
00:58:27 --> 00:58:30 to local public health regulations. in jurisdictions
00:58:30 --> 00:58:34 like Ontario, they do not perform cosmetic services
00:58:34 --> 00:58:38 on feet with suspected active infections; refer
00:58:38 --> 00:58:41 clients to licensed medical providers strictly
00:58:41 --> 00:58:45 follow IPAC instrument reprocessing guidelines
00:58:45 --> 00:58:49 product claim and safety: Natural health products,
00:58:49 --> 00:58:52 essential oils, and enzyme supplements are not
00:58:52 --> 00:58:54 established medical treatments or cures for fungal
00:58:54 --> 00:58:57 nail infections, athlete's foot, or warts.
00:58:57 --> 00:59:00 Always verify appropriate regulatory authorization,
00:59:01 --> 00:59:06 example Health Canada NPN slash DIN, and seek
00:59:06 --> 00:59:08 advice from a health care provider relating to
00:59:08 --> 00:59:12 potential drug interactions or skin sensitivities.
00:59:13 --> 00:59:16 If a supplement promises to cure nail fungus
00:59:16 --> 00:59:20 or dissolve foot biofilms, treat that as an unauthorized
00:59:20 --> 00:59:24 regulatory red flag. I do not assume any liability
00:59:24 --> 00:59:28 for the application or misuse of the information
00:59:28 --> 00:59:32 presented. That's going to do it for me today.
